COMPOUND EXPLANATION

ADJECTIVES

When we speak of compound adjectives, we do it of the

adjectives composed by two words separated by a NECY VANESSA

script. We can say that a compound adjective is one that HERNANDEZ DIAZ

gives rise to the union of two or more adjectives that

modify the same name or noun. These adjectives should

incorporate a script to avoid any confusion or

ambiguity.

In general terms, we can say that in English, compound

adjectives are hyphenated when they are placed in front

of the noun they modify (A well-done work), but they

do not carry it when they are behind (The work is well

done). Another aspect that affects the adjectives that we

are dealing with today is related to adverbs. In this

sense it should be explained that in compound

adjectives composed by an adverb ending in -ly- it is

not necessary to put a script: It's poorly decorated. Nor

should we put a hyphen in compund adjectives whose

adjectives start with a capital letter as can occur, for

example, in those that make up a title.

STRUCTURE

adjective + substantive

EXAMPLE

An actor who is well known > A well-known actor

– A girl who is four years old > A four-year-old girl

– A person who works hard > A hard-working person

– A conference that lasts three hours > A three-

hour conference

Adjectives can not have any plural word.

- A three-hour conference (is incorrect)

- A three-hour conference (is correct)

PRESENT EXPLANATION FANNY CAROLINA

PROGRESSIVE SÁNCHEZ SUAREZ

The present progressive is used to express that an

activity is happening at the moment of speaking.

Present Progressive: The action began in the past, and it

is going on at the moment of speaking. Probably the

activity will continue and end at some point in the

future.

STRUCTURE

Present progressive is formed with the verb to be more

a gerund.

To be + gerund.

EXAMPLES

My grandfather is reading the newspaper.

They are eating at a new fancy Colombian restaurant in

down town Miami.

She is taking a bath.

The President is delivering a speech on T.V.

He is buying a present for his wife.

We are baking a cake.

Wh-question is a term in generative grammar for

a question that is formed with an interrogative word

(what, who, whom, whose, which, when, where, why,

WH QUESTIONS or how) and that expects an answer other than "yes" or JAQUELINE PULIDO
"no." Contrast with yes-no question.
MONTES
Wh-questions are marked by both a Wh-word

and subject/verb inversion (or subject-auxiliary

inversion), except in those cases in which the subject is

itself a Wh-word.

Wh-questions are also known as Wh-

interrogatives, information questions, information-

seeking questions, and content questions.

QUESTION ANSWER EXAMPLE

What Thing What is your

name?

When Time When is the

party?

Who Person Who is your

brother?
Where Place Where is the

bank?

Why Reason Why do you like

How Directions How do you

MODAL VERBS EXPLANATION: JENNY ALEXANDRA

RAMIREZ
Modal verbs are a part of the larger category called

auxiliary verbs which are verbs that cannot be used on

their own. They need to be accompanied by another

(main) verb. Sometimes modal verbs are called modal

auxiliaries.

Modal verbs are unlike other verbs. They do not change

their form (spelling) and they have no infinitive or

participle (past/present). The modals must and can need

substitute verbs to express obligation or ability in the

different tenses.
Can

may

might

will

STRUCTURE

A Modal verb is followed by another verb in the base

form (the infinitive without the 'To') and they are not

conjugated (we don't add an 'S' in third person).

Subject + Modal Verb + Verb (base form of the

infinitive).

EXAMPLES

Alexandra could play the piano

Past simple: Sorry I'm late. I had to finish my math test.

Present perfect: She’s had to return to Korea at short

notice.

Future: You'll have to work hard if you want to pass the

exams.

Infinitive: I don't want to have to go

PRESENT EXPLANATION NELCY VANESSA

PERFECT HERNANDEZ DIAZ

The perfect present in English is a verbal time, which

allows us to narrate or describe facts and actions that

have occurred in the near past and which continue to

have importance in the present. Usually we can use it to

describe recent events.

STRUCTURE

The structure of this verbal time is summarized in the

sum of the "subject" being able to be this a name or a

pronoun, but the auxiliary "to have" that in English is

have / has, but the action or verb in past participle time.

So that we understand better, we observe the structure

in graphic form.

SUBJECT + HAVE / HAS + VERB IN

PAST PARTICIPLE

EXAMPLES

Carl has seen apartments

She has cried for him

Obama has won the elections

Messi has played very well

I have slept since this morning
