136Executive Summary
In this report, a comprehensive set of parametric analyses and corresponding design of the New
Elevetor slab system performed for various loading and design configurations was discussed in detail
with illustrative examples.
The New Elevetor system provides an efficient means for construction of raised slab systems with
ventilated crawl spaces that can be used for various purposes. The modular permanent formwork
assembly allows for easy and rapid construction of a monolithic reinforced concrete structure with
significant gravity load resistance capacity.
Detailed analyses of a representative New Elevetor stab area have revealed that the closely spaced
columns and short span slab sections in between result in considerable gravity load resisting
‘capacity. The system can essentially resist the design truck loads including dynamic allowance and
braking loads by its gravity and lateral load resistance capacity. Nevertheless, additional lateral load
resistance support from the surrounding structure is required for design safety against brittle shear
failures.
A simplified preliminary design guide for the New Elevetor gravity load resisting system was
developed and presented in the report. Following design of the gravity load resisting system, it is
recommended to assume that the New Elevetor system relies on the main structure for the entire
lateral seismic force.
‘The column interaction diagrams as well as the calculations of shear capacity show that the New
Elevetor system has high axial load capacity, moderate shear capacity, and minimal moment capacity
resulting in low lateral load resistance. For all live load levels studied, the lateral load resistance of
the system was found to be grossly insufficient to resist the resulting seismic loads. Hence, the
system ~ by design — relies on the surrounding main structural system for lateral load resistance due
to incomplete load path for lateral load resistance and lack of transverse reinforcement in columns
for ductile failure.
Depending on the load resisting system of the main structure, lateral load resistance support for the
New Elevetor slab system may take place in different ways. The mechanism of lateral load support is
generally through bearing of the New Elevetor slab on the main structural elements. These elements
can be foundation walls, shear walls, beam-column frame, or individual columns as in the case of the
example presented herein. In all different cases of lateral support, the lateral displacement of the
New Elevetor slab necessary for mobilization of the supporting force should not be more than 2% of
the height of the New Elevetor system in order to prevent excessive damage to the columns.
For large slab areas made of the New Elevetor system, construction of perimeter shear walls was
found to provide an effective solution for satisfactory lateral load resistance. Depending on the slab
area and the aspect ratio, the slab thickness should be determined to assure rigid diaphragm
behavior of the slab. .
|n conclusion, based on a comprehensive set of parametric analyses of the New Elevetor raised slab
system for various loading and design configurations, a simplified design table for the preliminary
design of the gravity load resisting system was developed and various principles and strategies were
laid out as well as recommendations made for the case-specific design of the lateral load resisting
system in the form of support from the surrounding main structure.
