CHAPTER III

TECHNICAL BACKGROUND

Technicality of the project

This chapter discusses the technicality of the project by which it

describes the type of the project to be developed and its functionality. It also

represents the type of application in the development of the project.

Figure 1. Project Framework

It shows that to be able to avail a scholarship, the applicant or student

must fill-up necessary pre-application requirements, after filling up, it will be

assessed by the created model using decision tree classification. Qualified

applicants are required to upload their secondary requirements before

scholarship granting. However, once conditions do not meet the set rules on

the model, a remark which serves as feedback informs the student on areas he

or she failed to be qualified.

The Decision Support System for Online Scholarship Application through

classification using Decision Tree algorithm is a system is utilized using a

personal computer, tablet, cellphone or any device that can connect to the

internet and has an installed browser. Its main purpose is to assess the pre-

application requirement of applicants (students).

The Hypertext Preprocessor (PHP) was used to develop console and

graphical user interface of the “Decision Support System for Online

Scholarship Application through classification using Decision Tree algorithm”.

The system is operationalized under Windows 7 operating system as its

minimum requirements for the information system.

The overall functionality of this information system is beneficial to the

department because it lessens their work especially in assessing pre-

application requirements particularly in the residence, gender and monthly

income of each applicant. It can also be an advantage to the student-applicants

because it uses online technology where every aspiring applicant can transact

online, the applicant also gets an immediate feedback of their scholarship

application.
DETAILS OF TECHNOLOGIES TO BE USED

The scope of this section is the discussion of the technology used on how

the proposed system will work and the necessary details or the requirement for

running the system.

 MySQL. The researchers choose MySQL because it is open source

software and it has the features that use a very fast thread-based

memory allocation, and it is relational (RDBMS).

 XAMPP. The researchers used XAMPP because it is a free open source cross-

platform web server solution stack package which is consisting of Apache,

MySQL and PHP.

 Bootstrap. Bootstrap is a web design platform that is used to layout and

designs the system interface.

 Adobe Photoshop. The research used Adobe Photoshop because it used

for editing images and creating logo and buttons for the design.

 AJAX. The researchers used AJAX because it is a new technique for

creating better, faster, and more interactive web applications with the

help of XML, HTML, CSS and Java Script.

 JQuery. The researchers will use jQuery because it is a JavaScript

library that allows web developers to add extra functionality to their

websites. It is open source and provided for free under the MIT license. In

recent years, jQuery has become the most popular JavaScript library

used in web development.
