Definition of Computer

A Computer is a multipurpose device that accepts input, processes data, stores data, and
produces output, all according to a series of stored instructions.

1.1 Uses of computer

 Computing can help businesses by making their staff efficient and productive and also
save their valuable time in any business or office.
 In schools they will help the learners to comprehend the basic concepts better with the
help of video or audio examples.
 In higher learning institutions they will help the professors and researchers to do their
work very fast and in an efficient and better way and also help them to share the same
knowledge with their other members of staff.
 They also become a vital gadget in several sectors; railways, banking, electricity,
telephone departments, shopping carts etc are just but a few of them.
 Also they are used in the medical industry to help doctors in diagnosing the diseases
quickly and efficiently.
 All the administrative systems, whether private or public are now using these systems and
this practice can be evident in every part of the world.

1.2 Applications of computer

1.2.1 Role of Computer in Embedded System

Embedded systems are used to control, monitor or help the operation of equipment. An
embedded system has software embedded into hardware, which makes a system dedicated for an
application or specific part of an application or product or part of a larger system. It processes a
fixed set of pre-programmed instructions to control electromechanical equipment. Today,
embedded systems are found in cell phones, digital cameras, camcorders, portable video games,
calculators, personal digital assistants, microwave ovens, answering machines, home security
systems, washing machines, lighting systems, fax machines, scanners and many other devices.

1.2.2 Role of Computer in Simulation

Computer simulations run on a computer to show behavior of a system. It represent running of

system’s model. It makes the use of abstract model to simulate the system. Computer simulation
used in mathematical systems like physics, chemistry, biology and in various human systems like
economics, social science, and engineering.

1.2.3 Use of Computer in Defence

Computer performs very important role in Defence. Computers are used to track incoming
missiles target to destroy them. Computers are used in tanks and planes and ships to target
enemy forces, help diagnose any problems with the platforms. Computers are used to hold
documents, maintenance records and records of events. They are also used on Intercontinental
Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs) that use GPS and Computers to help the missile get to the target.

1.2.4 Role of Computer in Medical

Computer plays very important role in medical science. It helps the doctors to conduct various
surgeries. Using computers, we are able to hold all of patients' information in a more organized
way. With so many patients and their information, files and records would occupy too much
space. Computers allow people in the medical field to store information.

1.2.5 Role of Computer in Biometrics Systems

The word “biometrics” came from Greek word which can be divided into two roots: “bio” means
life and “metrics” – to measure. Biometrics offer automated methods of identity verification or
identification on the principle of measurable physiological or behavioral characteristics such as a
fingerprint or a voice sample

1.2.6 Role of Computer in Banks

Computer technology has made several important impacts on our society. Today computer is
playing very important role in every field of life. Many activities in daily life can be performed

very easily and quickly. Computers are widely used in banks. They are used in banks for record
keeping and maintaining accounts of customers.

1.2.7 Role of Computer in Education

Computer teaching plays a key role in the modern education system. Students find various notes
on the internet using computer. Students find it easier to refer to the Internet than searching for
information in fat books. The process of learning has gone beyond learning from prescribed
textbooks. Internet is a much larger and easier-to-access storehouse of information. When it
comes to storing retrieved information, it is easier done on computers.

Conclusion

Surely computers have very elaborated role in daily day life of humans. The biggest proof is
present at our surroundings. Just having a look around at our surroundings will be enough to
prove the involvement of computers in everyday lives. Shopping, banking, traveling, stocking,
literature, entertainment, public sector, private sector, almost everywhere computers are playing
their roles efficiently. Computers can be designated as one of the most creative innovations of
human beings. In coming days computers are even going to be more pervasive, because
technology is getting advanced day by day.
