It should be pointed out that some of this literature
was published by arch-conservative voices within
the hierarchy. Cardinal Ottaviani, the aging Pro-
Prefect of the Congregation of the Faith (formerly
the Holy Office) sent a personal letter to Pope
Paul VI in September, 1969, accompanied by a
"theological study" highly critical of the Novus
Ordo Mass. The document, subsequently known as
the "Ottaviani intervention," first appeared in
the United States in the
pages of Triumph magazine
(December, 1969). This "intervention" by a pre-
late who headed the Congregation of the Faith
circulated widely among Traditionalist Catholics
and reinforced the rising tide of Traditionalist
opposition to the new liturgy.
