1. SPS 2 − Alkaline Rust Remover Solution

A. Procedure

(1) Make−Up of SPS 2 Alkaline Rust Remover Solution

(a) Fill the tank with cold water to 50 percent of its

(b) Slowly and carefully add the necessary amount of


alkali; stir to mix.

(c) Fill the tank with water to 85 percent of its


operating volume.

(d) Heat to the temperature specified in the cleaning


process.

(e) Fill the remaining operating volume of the


tank with tap water. Keep the solution at the
specified temperature.

(f) Stir to mix.

with tap water, keep the solution at the specified
temperature, and stir to mix.

NOTE: When the solution no longer strips within


the time specified in the SPOP, replace the
solution.

5. SPS 11 − Wet Abrasive Solution

A. Procedure

(1) Make−Up of SPS 11 Wet Abrasive Solution

Abrasive Aluminum Oxide 5 lbs/gal (600 g/l)

Anti−solidifying 4 oz.wt/50 lbs (5 g/kg) of


Compound (PMC 1612) abrasive

Corrosion Inhibitor 15 ml/gal (4 ml/l)

* Not required if the blasting equipment is made of


stainless steel.

(a) Fill the tank with water to approximately 3/4 of


its operating volume.

(b) With the pump ON, slowly add the necessary amount
of abrasive aluminum oxide (PMC 3046 or PMC
3052−8).

(c) Add the necessary amounts of anti−solidifying


compound (PMC 1612) and corrosion inhibitor (PMC
9100, PMC 9132, PMC 9332, SPMC 140, SPMC 172, or
SPMC 194). Corrosion inhibitor is not required if
the blasting equipment is made of stainless steel.

(d) Fill the tank with water to its operating volume.

(e) Permit the slurry to mix fully for 2 − 3 minutes


before you operate the machine.

(2) Slurry Maintenance

(a) After every four hours of machine operation,


examine the abrasive content of the solution as
follows:

1 Fill a 100 ml or 500 ml graduated cylinder with


a sample of slurry as it leaves the gun.

2 Permit the slurry to settle to the bottom of


the graduated cylinder.

NOTE: Abrasive content, by volume, should be


kept at approximately 30 − 40 percent.

3 Record the results in a department log book


before the next periodic check.

(b) Add three milliliters of corrosion inhibitor for


each pound of abrasive added (or, 6.6 ml of
corrosion inhibitor for each 1 Kg of abrasive).
Corrosion inhibitor is not required if the
blasting equipment is made of stainless steel.
Add 0.5 ounce of anti−solidifying compound for
each six pounds of abrasive added (or, 5.2 g
anti−solidifying compound for each 1 Kg of
abrasive).

of the tank with corrosion inhibitor (water

NOTE: This solution can be made up in a spray


container for local application. Be sure
to shake the container before you apply the
solution.

(2) Solution Maintenance

CAUTION: DO NOT USE AIR AGITATION FOR MORE THAN


FIVE MINUTES BEFORE TESTING OR USE.

(a) Follow the manufacturer's instructions to maintain


the solution.

(b) Change the solution one time each month or when


there is contamination of the solution.

NOTE: If the solution is premixed in a sprayer,


the monthly disposal does not apply.

(c) Use this solution at ambient temperature up to


200°F (93°C).
