BACKGROUND OF THE PROBLEM

Sign is one of the instruments needed to help in our daily life. Sign play an important
role in our society to make things easier. Different place has their different culture, different
unique food and their unique traditional ways. Hence, attract many tourists to come to Malaysia
to taste the food and experience culture in Malaysia. Signage play an important role to guide
the direction or shows the culture of its place. However, most of the district directional didn’t
quite help to make things easier. As example, mostly the directional signage did not show or
give the visual impact to make it memorable or easy to understand sign. Which is will make
the tourist not so convenient to walk around and discover what’s lies in certain village district.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

Nowadays, we are in the era of technology where people feel to discover things by
phone. The modernization of the whole thing has influence variety of our living style. People
start to comment and we start to aware how useful thing are if we have the basic idea of “what
and how to do” things. As we can see, the cultural place or even historical place sometime it is
hard to find. Even for our self, local people. Sometime the signage already half down or rusty
and even it doesn’t have any signage. Some signage just is just like the ordinary signage that
didn’t catch people attention at all. The problem has affected our new generation to stating to
less care about culture. Hence, traditional culture might vanish and forgotten and also might
affected tourism.
RESEARCH OBJECTIVE

The objective of this research is to suggest the idea of district directional signage with
our local symbol culture to make tourism direction “where to go, what to find” easier. We can
preserve our culture and the most important is to portray it let tourist to see. Also, to identify
the current district directional signage in Malaysia. To investigate the relation between signage
and culture. To create awareness among Malay community to promote tourism with local
symbol culture. To propose district directional signage with local symbol culture towards
sustainable tourism. We can ensure that our local also will notice the unique, culture, food of
certain place to visit.

SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF STUDY

The study took a few types of culture symbol on directional signage as a subject matter
in this study. Therefore, the uniqueness which are trying to find out are only focused on these
subject matters. Due to local culture, food, craft, the research also will be limited only on
district location.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The study is to as certain how many directional signage installed and how it affected
tourism. This research also to study how many young generations know about traditional food,
craft, culture and what is the factor that lead to reachability issue of easy to navigate.
Directional signage can be utilized with sustainable tourism. This tradition should be taught
the culture elements and will be transferred to the new generation. If not preserved, the nation
would lose its cultural identity.
LITERATURE REVIEW

In our daily routine, we encounter many different kinds of signage. As we all know,
signs are used to give us directions like exit signs, to control traffic on our streets such as stop
sign, to explain the use of computer programs such as save symbol, to warn us about an
incoming danger such as wet floor signs, or to ask us to perform a specific action such as
turning off mobile phones.

According to McDougall SP, Curry MB and De Bruijn O (1999), stated that signage
plays an important role in our society as a means of transmitting a message in an attempt to
persuade us what to do and what not to do, thus acting as stationary, persuasive
communication.

Unlike using mass media, the platform can transmit very persuasive communications
while signage does not rely on expensive high technology or a large number of people to give
information. Also, the recipients don’t have to have any equipment to receive the
information. So effectively, every person without any equipment is a potential recipient of the
message.

The inexpensive maintenance cost of signage makes it a highly popular method for
giving information. Although we are surrounded by signs in our everyday life, the
information through signage may not well understood.
CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

Figure 1: Research Conceptual Framework

Based on figure 1, the conceptual framework for the research is based on forgotten
traditional culture in term of directional signage. The main factor is because of the low
awareness to implement local symbol culture in directional signage. The cause of the factor is
because of the modernization of signage system. Another cause is because digitalization world
that has evolved. Most of the new generation have low awareness of how important culture is
and they started to forget. The study will be focused on the culture element, food element, of
certain place. The effect from these problems is our culture might loss if didn’t preserve. Also,
the hard to find location will make unsustainable tourism. The solution of this problems is by
propose district directional signage with local symbol culture.
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Figure 2: Research Design Framework

Based on figure 2, the figure shows a chart of the research design framework where it
contains is research design, research study, research method, research sampling, research
strategies, research objective and research question.

Based on the research, the research design is an exploratory design. Where the study
will be pilot study and precedent study. Research method of this study will be qualitative
method. Observation, field survey, content analysis and precedent study will be the strategies
in conducting this research. Meanwhile, the research sampling will cover local district
traditional food, traditional food culture, craft and signage system. There are several questions
regarding the research, the question is as follows;
