CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
As humans, it is normal for us to commit mistakes and failures. They can affect our lives
in different aspects of living. Whether you are rich or poor-- no one is immune to it. They are
just two of life's aspects most people are afraid of. But as a matter of fact, failure or mistakes
themselves is not the one that really causes a great impact to us but the fear of having it. Besides,
In fact, based on Psychology Today, on their article entitled "Ten Surprising Facts about
Failure"; it is said that, "Failures make you believe you are helpless" and that it is an emotional
wound. Another one from Social Anxiety Association, based on the article "Social Anxiety Fact
Sheet: What is Social Anxiety Disorder?" It is stated that Social Phobia is the third largest mental
health care problem in the world today (Year 2017). Moreover, according to Mind Tools--
"...fear of failure (also called atychiphobia) is when we allow that fear to stop us doing the things
that can move us forward to achieve our goals... and that can be linked to many causes. For
instance, having critical or unsupportive parents is a cause for some people. Because they were
routinely undermined or humiliated in childhood, they carry those negative feelings into
childhood." Those are just some of the causes and negative effects mistakes and failures can
give.
On the other hand, in the history, there are some people which were all hugely successful
in their fields in spite of failures. They became "winners" but they've failed first. They've failed
not once, twice nor thrice. They've failed countless times. Don't forget that all successful people
have failed and that they did not stop after their failures. "Winners" don't enjoy failures but they
would never let failure stop them. If these people stop at failure then the world would not br
filled with greatness as it is today. Unfortunately, some tend to think that people who are
successful were just lucky, it just fell into their laps or they just had the right connections. But
behind those successes are the years of struggle, failure, mistake, endurance and judgement.
When you failed, some people will instantly judge you or probably they will call you a "loser".
One of those successful persons who had experienced this is Jim Carrey. Jim Carrey was booed
off during his first stand-up comedy act in Toronto. He failed to land a part when he auditioned
for Saturday Night Live. As what he notes, "Maybe other people will try to limit me but I don't
limit myself." In spite of setbacks, he still became one of the most famous comedians in history,
a multi-millionaire and an inspiration to many. Another one is Michael Jordan who said, "I've
missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been
trusted to take the game's winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over again in my life.
And that is why I succeed". Although, he went on to win Olympic Gold Medals, NBA
Championships, NBA MVP awards and considered by many as the greatest player of all time.
Sharp words and intimidating stares were thrown to them by many but they still strive for their
goals because these people have the passion and enthusiasm to endure. And now, people are
And that is how failures affect some of the greatest persons in history. But what about
others which are still dealing with these obstacles? This fear of (having) failure have huge
impacts to an individual personally so then the researchers want to know how failures and
mistakes affect someone in his/ her social life. The researchers conduct this study entitled "The
Effects of Having Mistakes and Failures on Social Life of the Selected First Section Students in
the Peñaranda National High School S.Y. 2018-2019" to find out what mistakes and failures
people have commonly committed with personal and social effects and that if the age and gender
can affect how they deal with them, to know how people see mistakes and failures and also how
they see themselves when they have committed mistakes and failures by making the first section
students (having different age and gender) of Peñaranda National High School S.Y. 2018-2019
the respondents.
