I. Introduction

A. Definition and Purpose

Modern Tropical architecture is a type of architecture that adapts in a

tropical climate with a touch of modern construction design. The modern
tropical architecture is an expression of refreshing vibe of tropics design that
reflects the orientation of the natural climate. The sunlight, heat, scent, and
vibrant colors add up to create an amazing sensory experience which a modern
tropical architecture is capable of. Inherent to its modern design is extraordinary
natural light and views are achieved with the wide windows and openings. This
modern residence blends perfectly to the native traditional houses of our
country that adapts in the modernization and also preserves our culture
because of the materials being used. Tropical architecture is also into energy
conservation design.

The Philippines’ location is close to the equator that compose of tropical

rainforest, humid subtropical, tropical savanna, tropical monsoon and oceanic
climate. A good house and window orientation increases the energy efficiency
of a home, making it more comfortable to live in. The important orientation
aspects to consider is the direction of your house and windows face and their
solar and wind access.

The significances of the proposal are the ff:

 It seeks to preserve the traditional dwelling of the Tropical Country culture in
relation to correlate in architectural modernism.
 It seeks to address alternative and sustainable design and construction
materials, using its extraordinary capabilities
 It seeks to provide a highly ecofriendly home that responds to the natural
phenomenon.

B. Overall Appearance

The design concept of this proposal is a combination of modern

architecture and tropical based architecture design.

 Modern Design Concept

The concept of a modern architectural design that is being applied to

the structure are the appearance of the half truss roof, the cornered window,
the presence of most vertical and horizontal lines, the less detailed design, and
the arrangement of minimal context. (Fig 1)

FIG.1 Cornered windows and the presence of vertical and horizontal lines

 Tropical Design Concept

The presence of the high ceilings, large window openings, exposed

of beams and columns, the mostly use of wood and glass, and the green
spaces sums the design. The height of the structure and the large window
openings is intended to allow more of the natural ventilation resulting to a
positive impact to energy conservation. The exposed beams and columns is

basically to give support to the firmness of the structure at the same time giving
style to the structure. The making use of woods and glass is based on rich
supply and availability of these resources in a tropical place. The green spaces

and ornaments make it more refreshing to live reflecting on the most tropical
country culture that are into farming and growing fields.

The spaces are well planned to keep the connection between the
structure and the nature. The choice of materials use in this design is well
observed to collaborate each and every material’s capabilities to achieve the
sustainable and ecofriendly design.

The size of the proposed modern tropical house is

Designed accordingly to the standard requirements of:
o Anthropometrics (human standard sizes)
o Movements

With these two considerations, the size of the structure is spacious

enough to provide a comfortable shelter and some spaces for leisure
activities.

b. Shape

The shape of the structure inherits the style of modern architecture

the concept of minimalism in edgy sides that most likely projects square
and rectangular design.

a. Materials

Aside with the design itself, one of the main focus of this proposal
is also putting up importance in material sustainability. The house is
composed of bamboos and (wood ni sir mark) that is sustainable enough
because of its short time propagation. Bamboo, like true wood, is a
natural composite material with a high strength-to-weight ratio useful for
structures and has an excellent flexibility. Bamboo has a higher
compressive strength than wood, brick or concrete and a tensile strength
that rivals steel. The bamboos are filled with clay to improve firmness
and erected compactly. Bamboos usually grow 3 – 5 feet (0.80 – 1.40)
meters in height per year. In a span of 3 years, an excellent quality of
bamboo is fit for construction purposes.

(elaborate also about …. Wood ni sir mark)

The materials used in the structure is grouped accordingly to its kind and
functions:

Modern based materials

 15% concrete
 Glass and aluminum fixtures

b. Location and methods of attachment

The location of the proposed Modern Tropical House is fit to any

Tropical Place.
The methods of attachment of the proposal is based to 80% A PAsssive
cooling and 20% Active Cooling.
A passive cooling is the building design approach that focuses on heat
gain control and heat dissipation in a building in a building in order to
improve the indoor thermal comfort with low or no energy consumption.
An active cooling system is one that involves the use of energy to cool
something (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Active_cooling.)

To support the statements above, below is an attach Site Development

Analysis showing the natural movement of wind and the sun.
The structure is titled in a 45degree angle facing north, allowing more
natural energy (air and heat) to consume. The installation of more
windows and other open space areas like the lanai and balcony are
situated in the north and eastern part allowing more cooler air and more
light and less heat to enter the structure. With this concept, a less-0
energy consumption is needed during the day. Attached to the south
west part of the structure are windows and openings that serves exit for
the warm air present inside the structure during the noon and afternoon
time of the day. This cycle continues throughout the day with great help
to energy conservation. This concept supports most importantly the
purpose of this mechanism that is to provide a high ecofriendly design
that responds to the natural phenomenon.
