Conduction Of Heat Is High

Making of AAC Blocks conduction of heat is high in comparison to CLC and Clay and
Bricks. It is because of the usage of lime, gypsum and aluminum powder in the raw
material during manufacturing process. The strength in AAC Bricks becomes less
when made with concrete chamber. With auto claves, the strength to AAC Bricks
becomes maximum. Finally, there is another big disadvantage in AAC Blocks. Their
absorption water is high. It is evident from the several million pores in it. This
facilitates their expansion in water, which can bring cracks in the structure. This
includes air gaps. Therefore, in long exposure to moisture, the material begins to
disintegrate. The strength in AAC Bricks is reduced when it wet. You may also
consider the environmental conditions before using AAC Blocks and Bricks in
building construction.

Here are some disadvantages of AAC blocks:

 The production cost per unit for AAC Block is higher.

 Plaster sometimes does not stick properly because of its smooth surface.
 Needs care during production itself, so that surface is not very smooth.
 Efflorescence occurs through mortar and water.

Few disadvantages of ACC blocks are:

1. Cost: They are costlier than the traditional red clay bricks. That is why it is
still not being widely used in Residential Bungalow Construction
2. Wastage: There is a constraint on the size of ACC blocks due to which
wastage while installation of ACC blocks is more as compared to red clay
bricks. Also they are brittle in nature compared to red clay bricks so
handling them carefully is important.
3. Availability: ACC blocks are factory made and they are not locally
available compared to red clay bricks. So the availability of ACC blocks in
large quantities is usually difficult.

Worst building material in construction industry. Please don't even think of using them. You
will get crack s every where in the wall constructed with acc block. Cracks are uncountable.
You don't want to shift to a new house that is full of cracks. You will start noticing cracks
after 2 to 3 months after plaster is applied to wall. Cracks will increase day by day . Carcks
are clearly visible after wall putty is applied.

Sometimes vertical, horizontal, and stair-step cracks appear when the walls are built
with dense concrete block or light weight concrete block or sand-lime bricks.

Following are the main reasons which cause cracks in ACC block Walls.

1. The vertical and horizontal cracks develop due to the drying shrinkage of
masonry units.
2. Cracks become more and more conspicuous when the partition walls are very
long or tall.
3. Cracks also become more conspicuous when the rich cement mortar is used for
the construction of partition wall.
4. Stair-step cracks are develops due to the movements of the foundation of
house.
The ACC blocks walls actually should be cured for 28 days and than allowed to dry for 14
days. If not done, it will definitely shrink and Cracked.

Here in the UK we have been using these type of blocks for years (normally Celcon or
Thermalite)

Cracking is a very common problem.

The main cause is the lack of expansion joints,we never have blockwork runs longer than
6m without joints,

We still get cracks

another cause is using strong mortar,we use 6:1

We still get cracks.

We have tried using bed reinforcement.

We still get cracks

We have had the manufacturers come to site to see what the problem is, they admitted
that we were doing nothing wrong, they stated that the cracks were “nothing to worry
about” it was “to be expected” and the plaster would hide it.

Not really what you want to hear.

We stopped using these blocks whenever possible. The one block make we found to result
in the least cracking is “Xella” which I have seen in many countries

Shear failure and less compressive strength as we know, that the weight of the AAC block
is less as compare to conventional red brick or fly-ash brick but we have to compromise
with the strength parameter. So whenever the load increases the permissible limit it
cracks.

As per my understanding of the AAC blocks… Following could be reasons for Cracks in
AAC blocks.

1. Thermal Expansion of the products

2. If Mortar Strength > Strength of block then mortar will shrink which increases
surface tension on block & may leads to crack.
3. Improper installation of AAC block (Use Coping Beam) and Non Uniform
Jointing mortar used.
However proper & Installation under supervision should eradicate these problems

AAC blocks are entrapped air hence do not have the strength and cannot take load. Also
if u use hammer to put nails in walls if AAC they crime le easily . The process and the
material mix also plays a. Vital role as does the autoclaving process. A good quality AAC
may not crack easy but quality checks in unorganized Sector are negligible. The builder
buys the cheapest material as it gets covered by plaster anyways.
