This log example demonstrates the improved repeatability of the EPM mode using four logging passes in a heavy
oil reservoir. Two passes are recorded using the standard CMR-Plus acquisition sequence, and two are recorded
using the EPM mode. Logging in the EPM mode is particularly important when evaluating very silty reservoirs with
small pores or heavy crudes.

at right, the CMR-Plus tool acquired
EPM data in a heavy oil and gas reser-
voir with fine laminations at 1200 ft/hr.
Track 1 presents the standard free-fluid
porosity (CMFF) using five-level aver-
aging and the corresponding high-res-
olution curve (vertical resolution of 110

resolution free-fluid porosity superim-
posed on the image from the FMI*

Track 3 shows the T2 distributions.
Over the section from 100 to 120 ft,
the high-resolution free-fluid porosity 120
curve identifies the fine laminations
apparent on the FMI image. The high-
resolution data are extremely useful
for the identification and characteriza-
tion of thin beds and evaluation of These sands all have 36 to 38% porosity. Permeability is an order of magnitude higher in the upper sand.
Magnetic resonance logging provides a cost-effective method to detect changes in sand quality and permeability.
