4.2.2 Challenges of Digital Technologies
Research Question 3: What are the challenges of digital technologies in AKBC and Comfort
Fm, Uyo?
In table 4.9 above, 6 respondents representing 30% strongly agreed that unstable power
supply has impeded the speed of broadcast operations, 11 respondents representing 55% agreed
while 3 respondents representing 15% disagreed to this. Thus, about 85% of the respondents
agreed that unstable power supply has impeded the speed of broadcast operations.
In order to examine the challenges of digital technologies, the respondents were asked in
question 9 of section 3, if lack of access to the digital technologies has led to inefficiency in
broadcast operations. Their responses are shown in table 4.10 below:
Table 4.10 shows that 7 respondents representing 35% strongly agreed that lack of access
to digital technologies has led to inefficiency in broadcast operations, while 13 respondents
representing 65% agreed. Therefore, 100% of the respondents were of the opinion that lack of
access to digital technologies has led to inefficiency in broadcast operations in their respective
space.
In order to examine the challenges of digital technologies, the respondents were asked in
question 10 of section 3, if high cost of accessories has led to the slow pace of delivering
broadcast programs. Their responses are shown in table 4.11 below:
Table 4.11: High cost of accessories has led to the slow pace of
delivering broadcast programs.

The table above shows that 12 respondents representing 60% strongly agreed that high
cost of accessories has led to the slow pace of delivering broadcast programs, 5 respondents
representing 25% agreed while only 3 respondents representing 15% disagreed. It is therefore
sufficient to say that high cost of accessories has led to the slow pace of delivering broadcast
programs because 85% of the respondents are of such opinion.
The analysis of questions with respect to the influence of digital technologies on the
operations of broadcast media shows that 100% of the respondents agreed that there has been
efficient broadcast of programs in their space as a result of the introduction of digital
technologies, 90% of the respondents were of the opinion that digital technologies have
enhanced the success of their jobs. Also, all the respondents under survey agreed that there is
clarity of pictures and sounds with the use of digital video camera and sound system and 100%
of the respondents also agreed that there is an increase in the number of quality programs as a

broadcast operations while 85% of the respondents also agreed that high cost of accessories has
led to the slow pace of delivering broadcast programs. Thus, AKBC and Comfort Fm, Uyo suffer
several challenges in the use of digital technologies.
CHAPTER FIVE
This chapter presents the summary, conclusion and recommendations based on the
findings of the study. This section is discussed under the following subheadings:
Akwa Ibom State with particular reference to AKBC and Comfort Fm, Uyo. The findings of this
i. The introduction of digital technologies in AKBC and Comfort FM, Uyo has since positively
due to its availability and also seminar that has been conducted for them on the use of the
accessories.
iii. There are challenges in the use of digital technologies in both media outlet.
5.2 Conclusion
It is clear that digital technologies have great influence on the operations of broadcast
media. This of course, is the monumental capabilities of the digital technologies in the Nigerian
Broadcast media. This realization has led to the acceptance and use of some of the relevant
technologies such as computer, the internet, digital studio and recorders. This infers that the
media have fought the shackles of backwardness as applied by Amuchie (2001) when he said “in
a world that has become a global village any country that stands aloof, whether out of ignorance
or lack of appreciation of this basic necessity will certainly contend the backwardness”
The rate of adoption and usage of these technologies in Nigeria Broadcast industry has
been very gradual as broadcasters are yet to be fully acquainted with these technologies, thus
With the introduction of these digital technologies, there has been improvement in the
work performance of broadcasters. These digital technologies have gone a long way to improve
content, delivery and quality of broadcast programs. This affirms the opinion of Malcom (2001)
that “the position of broadcast media all over the world would improve once they apply the
problems which are not really insurmountable, but requires some level of hard work and
commitment to overcome.
5.3 Recommendations
From the facts emanating from this study, it is clear that broadcasting in itself is
technology driven. Thus, it is inevitable that the future of broadcasting in Nigeria is digital.
In the light of this, the researcher recommends the following:
i. Akwa Ibom Broadcasting Corporation and Comfort FM, Uyo should adopt more
sophisticated digital technologies in their space in order to meet up with the technological
advancements of international broadcast media.
ii. Regular seminars should be conducted to educate the concerned staffs on the use of advanced
digital technologies. Hence, fast tracking the operations of their broadcast programs.
iii. The government should try to reduce value added tax on digital technologies, as this will help
reduce the overall cost of the equipment in order to lessen the stations financial burdens.
