Name of the Lesson: Solar System Competition

2. Grade Level: 5th grade

3. Suggested group size: small group

4. Subject: Science

5. Standard: E5B students understand that there are many components in the Solar

System including Earth.

6. Objective: Students will know the different planets of our Solar System. Students will be

able to see the ratio of how far each planet is from one another. Lastly students will be

able to research and learn about the different molecules that make up each planet.

7. Materials: Poster Board, crayon/ color pencils, construction paper, books on each planet

in our solar system, lined paper.

8. Procedure: You will put the students into nine even groups. Each group will them pick a

planet to study and with using only the library books provided they will research that

planet. The students have a worksheet that lists the items that they must find out about

the planet. The worksheet is labeled Planets Activity.

a. Some of the questions include: circumference of the planet, does it have any

rings, if so how many, can we live there, is there water, what is the planet made

of, what color is the planet, how far from earth is the planet, how far from the

sun is the planet, what is the weather like on the planet, why can’t we live on the

planet, what is an interesting fact you found about the planet.

After doing so the students must display the information with a drawing of the

planet onto a poster board. The next day the students will present the poster to the
class and will put it in the correct order along the white board. The sun will already

be on the board and the students can then see how the Solar System looks like with

the different planets. The students will then finish filling out their worksheet on the

other planets. This is their study guide for the test.

9. Assessment: The students will be given a 10-question test that is on the general facts

about each planet. This assessment will be given after all students have shared their

facts on each planet. The students will be graded on their poster 100 points and how

they present the information to the class. The student’s worksheet will be graded on

completion based on if they were actively filling out their worksheet while others were

presenting, this will be a total of 20 points. Lastly the students will have a ten point ten

question test to see how well they remember the general data of the planets. All

together the students can earn a total of 130 point.
