Method for determination of active oxygen mass fraction of household good “COMET”

Comet is a household chemistry that has powder form and disinfectant properties. It used for
various purposes of human life. Nowadays, a large number of people use this powder. The comet
contains substances such as anionic surfactants, chlorine-based bleaching agents, disinfectants,
flavoring agents, citral. Also Comet contains active oxygen particles.

Aim: To determine mass fraction of active oxygen in Comet in practice and compare it with
mass fraction of Comet according to the manufacture.

Equipment and reactive: Volumetric flask 250mL, cylinders, beakers, flasks, test tubes, burette,
pear, clamp, scales, Sulfuric acid, distilled water, Potassium permanganate

Sample preparation:

Sampling is carried out on the technical documentation for the test tool. Since, initially, Сomet
is in the form of a powder, if there are lumps or heterogeneity, then mixing and grinding in a
mortar are carried out until the granules and lumps disappear.

1) Sample preparation without dilution

A portion of the means from the cup is quantitatively transferred to a conical flask using 50-60
cm3 of distilled water, measured by a cylinder. The contents of the flask are mixed manually or
with a magnetic stirrer.

2) Sample preparation with dilution

A portion of the funds from the glass quantitatively transferred into a volumetric flask with
distilled water, bring the volume to the mark with water and mix. Part of the solution is taken
with a pipette and transferred to a conical flask.
Procedure:

1) Weigh 10 mg of Comet Powder.

2) Prepare powder samples using two methods.
3) Add 10-15 cm3 of sulfuric acid to the flask
4) Mix thoroughly and test with a solution of manganese potassium until the appearance of
pink coloring, which does not disappear within 1 minute.
5) Repeat three times and record the average volume.
6) Repeat the same with the sample prepared by the second method.

Processing of measurement results

1) The mass fraction of active oxygen X%, in the sample prepared by method 1, is
calculated by the formula:
Where:

V - the volume of potassium permanganate solution is molar concentration exactly with

(KMnО4) = 0.1 mol / dm3

0.0008 - the mass of active oxygen in grams, corresponding to 1 cm3 of potassium permanganate
solution

m - the mass of the sample, g

2) The mass fraction of active oxygen X%, in the sample prepared by method 2, is
calculated by the formula:

250 - volume of sample solution

V1- aliquot sample solution

Calculation:
2.6∗0.08
1) 𝑋 = ∗ 100 =2.08%
10
2.0∗0.08∗250
2) 𝑋 = ∗ 100 = 6.67%
10∗60
2.08%+6.67%
3) 𝑋𝑎𝑣 = = 4.375%

Conclusion:

In this laboratory work, an analysis performed on the composition of Comet. In that case, mass
fraction of active oxygen was determined. According to the data in GOST, I compared data from
experiment and GOST. Generally, as the manufacturer claims Comet powder contains from
3.5% to 14% of active oxygen. Active oxygen is important components, because it used for
disinfection, cleansing, elimination of any odors. With this experiment, I first find out that
Comet contains active oxygen and then determine that active oxygen in practice is equal to
4.375%. It means that the manufacture uses enough amount of active oxygen according to
GOST.
