ROCKETS

By Kobe Karakawa
WHAT IS A ROCKET?

The word "rocket" could mean many different

things. A lot of people think of a tall, thin,
round vehicle. They think of the rocket that
launches into space. The word "rocket" could
also mean an engine or a vehicle that uses an
engine such as a car.
WHEN WERE ROCKETS
INVENTED
The very first rockets that we know were
invented was in China in the 1200s. The rockets
were fireworks and were used for wars. Then
in the next 700 years, people made bigger and
better solid rockets. Many of these rockets were
also used in war. In 1969, the United
States launched the first men to land on the
moon using a Saturn V rocket.
HOW DOES
A ROCKET WORK
A rocket works like Newtons third law of
motion. He did these laws more
than 300 years ago. In his third law, it
states that there is an equal action and
an opposite reaction. The rocket pushes on
the exhaust and the exhaust also pushes on
the rocket. The rocket pushes on
the exhaust backward which allows the rocket
to move forward.
WHEN WERE LIQUID
ROCKETS FIRST USED?
The very first liquid fuel rocket was used in March 16,
1926 in Auburn, Massachusetts. The man who
invented this rocket is American Robert H.
Goddard who successfully
lunched the rocket. This rocket lasted only
for 2.5 seconds at a speed of 60 mph, reaching the
altitude of 41 feet and landing 184 feet away from
the launch site. This rocket was made from thin pipes
and was fueled by liquid oxygen and gasoline. Also,
a man name Konstantin E. Tsiolkovsky published a
treatise about the theoretical problems of using a
rocket in space. It wasn't until Robert Goddard's work
in the 1920s before anyone began to build modern,
liquid fuel rockets that would lunch people to space.
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF
THE ROCKET
The purpose of the rocket is to go on
missions. Early Nasa rockets were built by
military. Nasa also used these rockets to send
people to space. The very first American to be in
space was Alan Shepard who flew on the
Army's Redstone rocket. They also use rockets
to send men to the moon and to launch space
stations to orbit around the Earth. Nasa also uses
rockets to launch satellites to orbit Earth. They
also launch probes to other planets.
NEGATIVE IMPACTS OF A ROCKET

When a rocket goes to

space, it lets out gases and
debris such as aluminum oxide
and soot. These substance
affect the ozone layer of our
atmosphere and contribute to
global warming.
POSITIVE IMPACTS OF A ROCKET
Some positive impacts of a rocket is that
space exploration has given us new
technology and inspires new ideas for
the program. Also, rockets have made
many breakthroughs for the pass 25
years. Cellar phones are satellite
television are also huge breakthroughs.
CONCLUSION

New Rockets are also being developed

today. These rockets would also take
astronauts on future missions. These
rockets would look way different
because they would not look like space
shuttles. These rockets would look more
like older ones. Nasa is also working on a
powerful rockets that would take heavy
objects to the Intenational Space Station.
Someday these rockets would make it
possible to explore other worlds such as
Mars.
