Problem Statement:
In USM Engineering Campus, mostly the multi-storey buildings are equipped with staircases
only especially at the students’ hostels. Using staircases is tiring and require more energy as
well as time. This has become a major problem for the students when they carry their heavy
bags or during the semester break which they need to move their belongings up and down.
From the point of safety issue during using the staircase, narrow surface area of each steps of
staircases is quite dangerous for a person when using it moreover during the rainy day. Students
may accidentally slip and fallen down from the stairs due to slippery and narrow area of
staircases.

Proposed Solution:
On student behalf, we suggest to invent a automatic escalator for the students to provide a
comfortable campus life for them. Besides, we have also put up a security system before anyone
can accessed to use it. This is similar application as the smart card reader application where we
are required students to key in the authority password before accessing the escalator. This
security system served purpose to increase the hostel safety level and prevent outsider from
invading. Students are required to enter the correct password to pass through the gate and enter
the escalator path which will be driven by the motor. In order not to waste electricity, an
ultrasonic sensor is used to trigger the stopping of motor when there is no people using the
escalator. Students’ campus life will surely enhance with the implementation of this secured
escalator system.

Objectives:
i. To build a security system using keypad (password) for accessing the escalator.

ii. To drive the motor to move the escalator path.

iii. To stop the rotating of motor automatically using ultrasonic sensor by detecting the
distance of obstacle from the source.
