How can you disbelieve in Allah? Seeing that you were dead and He gave you life.
Then He will give you death, then again will bring you to life (on the Day of
Resurrection) and then unto Him you will return.

‫[ تَ ْك ُف ُرو َن‬tak’furoona] comes from the verb ‫[ َك َفََر‬kafara]

which means to disbelieve, bury a seed in the ground and
cover it up, and to be ungrateful.

Ayah 29

He it is Who created for you all that is on earth. Then He Istawa (rose over) towards
the heaven and made them seven heavens and He is the All-Knower of everything.

‫[ َج ِم ًيعا‬jamee’a3n] meaning ‘all’ can either be referring to

all of mankind going back to the prepositional clause in the
ayah َ‫[ لَ ُكم‬lakum] or it can be referring to the things that
were created on the earth. Both meanings are possible.
‫استَ َو ٰى‬
ْ [istawa] means ‘to rise’

Ayah 30

And (remember) when your Lord said to the angels: "Verily, I am going to place
(mankind) generations after generations on earth." They said: "Will You place
therein those who will make mischief therein and shed blood, - while we glorify You
with praises and thanks (Exalted be You above all that they associate with You as
partners) and sanctify You." He (Allah) said: "I know that which you do not know."

ً‫[ َخلِي َفة‬khaleefatan] meaning someone who will leave

behind them generation after generation. This is a
hyperbolized noun indicated by the ‫ ة‬at the end of the

2

word. َ‫ َخلِي َفة‬comes from the verb ‫ف‬

ََ َ‫[ َخل‬khalafa] which means
to come behind someone, to be right behind someone else.
The original nature of this word is not of a political nature
as translated in recent times.

ُ ‫[ يَ ْس ِف‬yas’fiku] comes from the verb ‫[ َس َف ََك‬safaka] which

‫ك‬
means to spill blood. When this verb is followed by the
noun َ‫[ ِد َماء‬dimaa’un] which is the plural of the word َ‫َدم‬
[damun] meaning blood, then the meaning is ‘to spill rivers
of blood. Which indicates mass murder will take place.
The angels say to Allah this creation of mankind will make
corruption on the earth and they [the angels] however, will
constantly be in a state of glorifying the perfection of Allah.
We see a contrast between corruption and glorifying the
perfection of Allah in this ayah. We think nowadays that
doing ‘tasbeeh’ is just in the masjid and only bringing
benefit to the one who does it. However, the impact of
doing real ‘tasbeeh’ will bring great goodness to the society
not just in the masjid. Real tasbeeh brings about real
obedience and declaration of Allah perfection.
Allah responds to the angels telling them that He knows
what they know not. One of the implied meanings here is
3

that Allah knows the potential of the human being. That

great goodness can come from them. So much so, that the
angels will eventually be sending greetings of salaam on
them, especially, to the Messenger ‫صلّىَاهللَعليهَوَسلّم‬.

Ayah 31

And He taught Adam all the names (of everything) , then He showed them to the
angels and said, "Tell Me the names of these if you are truthful."

Allah here says He taught Adam ‫ عليه السَلم‬the names of

everything. This gives us a look into a great linguistic
benefit, which is that the origin of all languages, are nouns,
and the way you manipulate those nouns become verbs.
So, names of things are essentially nouns.
These names are those of revealed knowledge [The Quran]
and that of worldly knowledge. Ideally, the Muslims need
to bring these two types of knowledge together. We find

nowadays two extremes, those who just learn religious

knowledge and those who just learn worldly knowledge.
To have a source where a Muslim can intertwine these two
components will enable him/her to tackle all aspects of life
in all its situations. For example, the option of studying
psychology from the Islamic point of view or political
science in Islam is not found nowadays. This is something
that we need to work towards to make it available for our
future generation’s InshaAllah.
