Problem 1

(a) What is the definition of fluid?

(b) What is compressible and incompressible flow?

(c) What is the definition of boundary layer?

(d) What is the conservation of mass and momentum?

(e) Why the kinetic energy of a fluid is decreasing along the upper surface of a body?

(f) Explain the forces that acting on the element of fluid.

(g) Draw the streamlines around the formula one racing car, shown it below

(i) What is the definition of laminar and turbulent flow?

(j) What is the definition of the Mach number? If the speed of sound is 342m/s and the
particular of air is moving at 525m/s determine the Mach number. Is the flow subsonic or
supersonic?
Problem 2

A liquid flows through a contracting section of a duct, as in Fig. A velocity probe inserted at
section (1) measures a steady value u1 =5 m/s, while a similar probe at section (2) records a
steady u2 =18 m/s. Estimate the fluid acceleration, if any, if Δx =135cm.

Problem 3

Determine the Reynold number at the trailing edge of a flat plate that is immersed in an air
freestream. The plate dimensions are 5m long and 1m wide. The velocity of the freestream is
2m/s, density of air is 1.23Kg/m3 and Dynamic viscosity is 1.85x10-6 Kg/m-s. Is the flow laminar
or turbulent?

Problem 4

A fluid is placed between two plate the upper plat is moving at 10m/s and the lower
plate fixed. Draw the velocity profile and what is the velocity at y=h/2.. Density is
50Kg/m3 and dynamic viscosity is 0.001Kg/m-s
Problem 5

Determine the exit velocity of the diffuser as shown in the figure. At section 1 the
velocity is 3m/s and area 1.1m2. At the section 2 the area is 3.2m2. if the pressure at
the inlet is 1atm. What is the exit pressure of the diffuser?
