EDITORIAL

Designers of Indian origin are kicking up a storm globally.

Last month, we featured Indian-born Nipa Doshi and
her British husband Jonathan Levien’s Chandigarh
collection of sofas for Moroso. Earlier, we also featured
Sahil Bagga and Sarthak Sengupta who showcased
their Katran collection at the Milan Furniture Fair
and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. This
time, it’s IIT Mumbai alumnus and now Amsterdam-
based designer Satyendra Pakhale’s Swan collection in
marble, which has recently been presented at the PAD
(Pavilion of Art & Design) fair in London.
In Design Basics, we feature the interesting exterior
of a house in Bangalore, where its trapezoid shape
has been its biggest advantage, accentuated with a
curving and external staircase. The architect explains
how the fluid structure has become a talking point in
the neighbourhood.
With the spirit of celebration in the air, it’s time to shop. We present Karthik Vaidyanathan’s
Varnam collection, which gives a contemporary twist to the rural craft of lacquerware from
Channapatna, on the outskirts of Bangalore. There’s also Sarthak Shah’s custom-made
cutlery to impress your guests. And for a touch of fun, try out some quirky doormats,
which promise to be practical and entertaining as well.
Enjoy the festive season and pick up some renovation tips here. Location courtesy BoConcept

There are never enough cabinets.

Six people live here and despite the 150

to hold everything the household needs. But
the family has accomplished it, with eight
wardrobes and containers, big and small,
placed one behind the other, in an L-shape.

CREATIVE SPACES

A
ndrea Castrignano is a young professional
who straddles several fields as a real
estate agent, interior designer, creator
and host of the television show Cambio Casa,
Cambio Vita (Changing Home, Changing Life),
besides authoring the book Change Home With
Andrea, published by Vallardi. The common
thread in all his enterprises is a passion for
interiors and spatial solutions. Respectful of
renovation but not blindly obedient, his style
is visible in this contemporary apartment in a
traditional building, overlooking a street in the
centre of Milan.

His skill lies in being able to retain the reassuring

elegance of the space while re-proposing it
in terms of size and decor. The most radical
decision was to pull down two walls in order to
obtain a living room towards the street side from
what used to be three separate rooms. This area
is divided from the study-cum-guest room by
two sliding doors which disappear when opened,
creating continuity. “A loft in a 20th century
building,” is how Andrea Castrignano defines his
not-so-humble abode.

Woodwork is predominant in the entrance hall

and the study, realised in open-pore durmast
in a shade of rather dark green, reinterpreting
the regular-grid traditional theme, imbued
with a sombre rigour. “I was inspired by the
design of the building’s main entrance door,”
says Castrignano. It’s a brilliant solution to hide
wardrobes, animate the ambience and play with
other chromatic choices. It complements the
background of the bookcase and absorbs light
from the window, offering a contrast to the wall
in silver-leaves, which reflects and diffuses light.
The floor is of the industrial kind, but with bigger
blocks, chosen with an intention to diffuse the
tension. Stone-work prevails on the walls and
floors of the bathroom and in the flat surfaces of
the kitchen. The sofa in the centre of the room
and the two round tables tell very different
stories. Some carefully selected accessories are
consistent with the surroundings and confirm the
absence of strong colours, leaving a symphony of
soft, natural shades that invite you to relax.

Here is a look at the wall that forms the background for the

from the entrance. The design is extended by the regular-
lined drawers at the bottom. The prevalence of white in the
accessories and furniture is an elegant statement.

M
attia Vayra, a young architect from Turin, Italy, graduated in Restoration Architecture
and Valorisation of Architectural Heritage and Environment, sharpening his skills in the
studio of Paolo Genta Ternavasio, an eclectic, free-spirited and sought-after interiors
professional. For his own home, he has chosen an old family apartment, overlooking a large
avenue in the historic centre of Turin, on the fourth floor of a beautiful building from the 1930s.
The interiors have retained certain aspects—the square entrance overlooking the rooms but
not large enough to contain furniture, high ceilings, coloured terrazzo tiles, rooms of restrained
dimensions (the bedroom, living room, kitchen and bathroom account for a total of around 70
square metres). Mattia has respected the division of spaces and existing materials, including the
fixtures, and succeeded in giving new life to the interiors by making minimal changes. He has
used the high ceilings and windows, opening on different sides, to provide abundant light to the
apartment and carried out a transformation consisting of décor, colours, salvaged furniture and
family heirlooms. “Maximum performance with minimum effort,” says Mattia, smiling and quoting
his mentor, architect Genta. The ability to integrate the old with the new is manifested right from
the entrance, where the vintage tiled flooring dictates the chromatic choice—yellow for the wall,
black for the wainscot and the door casing (the doors are white, in order to soothe the eyes from
all those colours).

garden. The black, plastic drop-chandelier from Maria Teresa adds modern appeal, bringing
in an effect of luxury, but with irony. A fine dark contour separates the wall from the ceiling,
highlighting the filler frames running around, reminiscent of the beginning of the last century. In a
quick and inexpensive solution, different tones are used to give individual character to the rooms
clustered around the entrance. Mattia has chosen colours from the Farrow & Ball palette, a classic
of British decor because, he says, “they are mellow and their nuances are truly special.” In the living
room, the walls are powder-blue and in combination with the white of the ceiling, create a cosy
atmosphere. Against this background, the salvaged as well as modern pieces of furniture stand out
equally. In the kitchen, the dominant colour is red; the flooring, re-polished and waxed, is graced by
vintage deco framework, adopting a contemporary look and suggesting the colour for the furniture
and wall cabinets, most of them inherited and refreshed with a single coat of paint.
A soft putty shade, original wooden flooring and salvaged pieces of furniture define the bedroom,
while the small master bathroom resumes the dual tone of the entrance—yellow walls and decorative
black stripes. Here, however, the series is calibrated to adapt to the pattern of the old rectangular
tiles, discovered in the apartment and given a fresh lease of life.

HABITAT
THE OWNER’S SECRETS
■ The colour allows existing materials to
become accomplices in the new domestic
scene. Even difficult elements, such as the
heaters, are incorporated into the environment
without clashing, covered in the same colour
as the walls.
■ The door and wall frames, in matching
colours, provide rhythm to the spaces,
contributing to the overall elegance.
■ Before throwing something away, try the
black effect! An old object painted dark
changes its look, transforming itself into a
bold, elegant and snobbishly chic piece.
■ The mirrors break down the wall and double
the depth. It’s a good idea to position them on
the wall facing the entrance to a room.

W
hy would a young entrepreneur decide to live in a space that clearly states its industrial
origins? Because of a sense of belonging that makes him feel at home. It echoes the
story of his family and the area where he lives. This is Gallarate, in the province of
Varese, a city that in the last century went through a glorious time thanks to its factories and
came to be defined as the Manchester of Italy. Twenty eight-year-old Paolo Fazzini (in the
photo) represents the youngest generation of an industrial textile family which, although
deeply changed, still carries the culture of its industry’s past. For a long time, he had been
looking for a warehouse to turn into a house cut around his needs and eventually settled for an
old, historic building, which houses a series of wide and luminous residential spaces.
The space where Paolo lives is set upon three levels—the first is a wide room with the kitchen
and living room, dominated by very tall windows; on the second level is the bedroom and at the
top is a large terrace. Paolo is the architect of his house, right from the choice of materials to
the furniture. Although he belongs to the marketing and communications field and assists his
mother with product ideation, he has demonstrated an ability to give the interiors a uniform
language. “The pursuit of identity is something that relates to my work, including defining a
corporate image and product assembly,” says Paolo with a genuine modesty.

W
hen he began university, he was seriously tempted by architecture, before deciding to
dedicate himself to economics. However, he kept the curiosity alive, keeping abreast
of trends by leafing through magazines and visiting exhibitions. There are three things
in his current residence, which strike you at first glance—the brick wall, which goes up to the
second floor, the choice of scaffold-boards for tables and an original kitchen corner wall, where
traditional cupboards have been replaced with a series of small furniture pieces, found at local
second-hand shops, hung in a nice composition and painted a sophisticated dull green, in the
same shade as the background. The bricks had already been plastered, but Paolo chose to
remove the layer since “it didn’t allow us to understand when the wall was built”, reverting them
to their original form. They bring character and catch the eye, also creating a background for the
staircase and balancing the high windows. Equally successful is the choice of unsophisticated
wood for furniture, but which is in harmony with the floor, not made of resin as it may seem
at first sight, but with the softness of a stucco made of lime, marble powder and water. Bricks,
wood, lime, all recall the old world of hard labour, with which Paolo Fazzini loves to surround
himself, with an attention to the past worthy of an archeologist’s. He also brought home some
pieces of furniture belonging to the family firm. The cart used to transport fabrics became the
sofa on wheels; the iron lockers, once used in locker rooms, are now useful containers in the
large area opposite the bedroom. The artefacts have been conserved with particular affection.
And there are still those who dare to say that the youth don’t have a sense of history!

The curving, interlocking exterior

B
uilt on 2100 sq ft, the Prasanna residence
in Bangalore is a unique trapezoid in
shape, attracting the attention of curious
onlookers. Why ? We were curious too. Smaran
Mallesh from Cadence, the architectural firm
that built the house, explains, “The client
wanted the building to make a strong visual
statement in the neighborhood. They were
very clear that they wanted something that
would have a strong visual identity compared
to the otherwise drab surroundings. Also, since
space was a constraint, efficiency in planning
and creating spaces was equally important.”
The visually-strong exterior, with a protruding
cantilever curve, is an extension to the
rectangular form of the house and connects
the different levels. Remarks Mallesh, “We
were interested in sculpting a sensual form.
However, we were also interested in spatial
implications that these curvilinear forms would
have on the internal space. The interlocking
and other formal actions cause interesting
spatial results both on the outside and inside.”
It also had a practical implication. Remarks
Mallesh, “Although the site was tight—less
than 1,600 sq ft—it was a corner property with
a length of 60 feet facing the road; we wanted
to exploit this condition through the form and
also formally express the staircase as opposed
to merely looking at it from a utilitarian point
of view.”
The exterior also reflects the fluidity of the
