Ribbed slab for Ground and Mezanine floors

Floor layout

Figure 1: Mezzanine and Ground Floor layout

Ribbed Slab Section
EBCS-2,1995 on Art. 7.2.3.1(1,2) recommends the following on size of ribbed slab section.
 Ribs shall not be less than 70 mm in width; and shall have a depth, excluding any topping,
of not More than 4 times the minimum width of the rib. The rib spacing shall not exceed
1.0 m.
 Thickness of topping shall not be less than 40 mm, nor less than 1/10 the clear. Distance
between ribs

Verification of proposed slab section against EBCS-2 recommendation
i. Rib width provided- 80 mm and the minimum recommended is 70 mm …ok
ii. Rib depth (excluding topping) is 200 mm. minimum recommended ≤ 4 ∗
𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑖𝑚𝑢𝑚 𝑟𝑖𝑏 𝑤𝑖𝑑𝑡ℎ = 4 ∗ 80 = 240 𝑚𝑚, ok.
iii. Rib spacing is 400 mm < 1000 mm ok

iv. Topping thickness ≥ { 1 ∗ (400 − 40 − 40) = 32 𝑚𝑚 , minimum 40 mm, since 60

Since the proposed section satisfies all the requirements of EBCS-2 recommendation it is used as
it is.
Verification of proposed slab section against Deflection
The proposed slab section has a predefined overall depth of 300 mm. the depth required from
deflection should be computed to see if ribbed slab with 300 mm is applicable to the floor system
being considered.

Since the provided depth, 300 mm, is greater than the minimum depth required from deflection,
the proposed section is safe against deflection.

Rib Analysis
The floor system, based on structural model, consists of two rib types; figure 1shows both. Here
after the ribs are analyzed to perform load transfer to girders and to determine the amount of
flexural and shear reinforcement required for the ribs.

Load transfer to girders is done separately for dead and live load using moment distribution
method. To obtain the design moment and shear the ribs are considered as continuous beams and
different load cases are assessed to obtain the maximum design shear and moment by varying the
location of live loads.
Rib 1
Structural model

Figure 4: Rib 1 structural model

The girder to rib connection is assumed to be pin at all locations. But to consider torsional effects
on the end girders, the ribs can be modeled with the end connections as fixed. But, in the
analysis to follow the first assumption is used.
Load Transfer to Girders
The load transfer is done by separate analysis of the dead and live load cases.

Design for flexure

Since the topping slab together with the ribs form a T beam system, it is designed as such where
the moment on the section causes compression at the flange and tension at the web (span/sagging
moment) and as a rectangular section for the reverse of the above case (support / hogging moment).
Design for sagging moment
The design of T beam is a trial and error matter since the location of the neutral axis determines
how the section should be designed. this parameter isn’t known without designing the section first.
Therefore, the following procedure is followed:
1. The location of the neutral axis is assumed to be within the flange and the section is design.
2. The assumption is checked. If it is okay, then the section is designed as rectangular beam with
b=bf.
3. If the assumption is not ok, the section is designed as T beam.

Design for Shear
From the reaction envelope the maximum shear is 18.54 KN. Therefore, Vsd=18.54 KN. Since the
ribs are supported on girders, they aren’t considered to be supported on point support. Therefore,
the design shear force is the same as the shear at the center line of support(Girders).
