PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT HOURS: 24 / Help students learn how to read like writers while creating the opportunities

of Teachers College, Columbia University, former fifth grade teacher, and writing teacher of
20 years, Amy offers writing workshops for all ages, and speaks frequently at conferences.

Guided Reading: Differentiating Literacy Instruction, Grades 3–8


PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT HOURS: 35 / Participants will learn how to observe and assess the reading behaviors
of intermediate and middle school students; form flexible groups; analyze and select appropriate texts; and plan guided
reading lessons that address the needs of individual readers within the group. Participants will learn about the complex
nature of the reading process and consider how each element of a guided reading lesson presents opportunities for teaching
and learning that will support the varying needs of students, including those whose first language might not be English.

Word Study: Teaching Phonics, Vocabulary, and Spelling, Grades 3–8


PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT HOURS: 35 / This course examines the rationales and theories underpinning the teaching
of phonics, spelling, and vocabulary in an authentic literacy classroom for grades 3–8. You will investigate essential categories
of learning and consider ways in which word study fits into a broader language and literacy framework. You will analyze teaching
and engage in inquiry that will deepen your understanding of how words work and serve as a set of instructional practices

School Leaders Seminar: What Every School Leader Needs
to Know About Effective Literacy Teaching, Coaching,
and Teacher Leadership, Grades K–6
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT HOURS: 25 / This four-day seminar is designed for school leaders interested in examining
the roles of effective teaching, systematic assessment, literacy coaching, and supervision in improving student achievement in
reading and writing. Topics include establishing coherence and a culture of continuous professional learning; understanding
texts, readers, and the writing process; and the design for instruction including intervention, phonics, spelling and word study.

Guided Reading: Responsive Teaching, Grades K–2


PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT HOURS: 35 / Participants will build a strong understanding of reading as a complex
process and learn how to help students become more proficient readers through differentiated instruction in small, guided
reading groups. They will use running records of oral reading behaviors to study a child’s progress in reading over time and
consider the role that a gradient of texts and matching books to readers has on student progress. Participants will analyze
assessment data to form flexible groups, select appropriate texts, and plan guided reading lessons for effective literacy

Introduction to Fountas & Pinnell Classroom™


PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT HOURS: 12 / This two-day session will introduce educators to a system for teaching
students that includes authentic experiences in reading, thinking, talking, and writing. Beginning with a vision of authentic

Phonics, Vocabulary, and Spelling in the Reading/Writing

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT HOURS: 35 / This course offers educators the opportunity to learn the role that phonics,
phonological awareness, vocabulary, spelling, and word study instruction play in learning to read and write. Participants
expand their knowledge of the alphabetic principle and how words work, develop an understanding of the essential elements
of a word study curriculum, learn how to assess students’ reading and writing for phonics and spelling knowledge, and use
a continuum of word study to plan for instruction. Attention will be given to supporting English language learners and to

Leveled Literacy Intervention for Grades 3, 4, 5, and 6–12
(Levels L–Z/Red, Gold, Purple, and Teal): Intensive
Small-Group Instruction for Struggling Readers
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT HOURS: 36 / Using the Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI) Red System (grade 3),
Gold System (grade 4), Purple System (grade 5), and Teal System (grades 6–12), this professional development training
will provide you with an introduction to an effective literacy intervention system for struggling readers in the intermediate,
middle, and secondary grades. In this six-day training, you will learn rationales and procedures for high-impact lessons that
engage students’ attention and thinking, and help them successfully read increasingly challenging text levels. Participants who

Leveled Literacy Intervention for Grades K–2:


(Levels A–K, Green, Blue, Orange): Intensive
Small-Group Instruction for Struggling Readers
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT HOURS: 36 / Over the course of this six-day training, you will be introduced to a
supplementary intervention system designed to help teachers provide powerful, daily small-group instruction for struggling
readers and writers. Leveled Literacy Intervention students participate in 30-minute intensive lessons, five days per week, that
combine reading, writing, and phonics and word study. Leveled Literacy Intervention for grades K–2 uses a specially created
and sequenced set of original children’s books, leveled A–N. Teachers use planned lessons that enable them to do highly
effective and efficient teaching, resulting in accelerated student progress. Participants who plan to teach LLI to at least one

Taking the Lead: Investing in Your School, Grades K–5


PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT HOURS: 60 / This seminar provides training to individuals who will take a lead in
developing literacy educators in the school. Participants will expand their expertise in the content of teaching reading, writing,
phonics/word-study, and in the instructional practices that build a community of engaged, active learners in K–5 classrooms.
Across the ten days, participants also engage in discussions of how best to facilitate continuous professional learning of

The Effective Literacy Coach Training, Grades K–8


PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT HOURS: 60 / This intensive professional development training helps literacy coaches to
improve teacher expertise and student achievement in their school, and supports literacy coaches in all aspects of their role.
You will learn how to navigate the multiple roles of a literacy coach successfully, including creating an effective school-based
literacy team, organizing for coaching quality, and helping teachers to see the relationship between literacy theory and
real-world practices. We will identify the critical attributes of a healthy, professional learning community for adult learners,
and how to build it for your school in collaboration with school administrators. With Center for Reading Recovery and Literacy
