Name: Jacob Walter Date 4/29/19

Area: Animal Sciences Animal systems

Job: Reviewing animal systems
Situation:
Students are completing a 6 part fetal pig dissection. They have completed basic anatomy and most of the digestive
system. They should take a few minutes to complete the digestive portion and then begin the respiratory portion.

Standards:
ANSC.03.03C444 Understand the role of the circulatory system its interactions and impact on animal health
 ANSC.03.03.a Identify major parts and their functions
 ANSC.03.03.b Relate functions to other systems
 ANSC.03.03.c Determine how changes affect the individual systems and a healthy animal

ANSC.03.12 Understand the role of the respiratory system its interactions and impact on animal health
 ANSC.03.12.a Identify major parts and their functions
 ANSC.03.12.b Relate functions to other systems
 ANSC.03.12.c Determine how changes affect the individual systems and a healthy animal
Targets:
I can identify the major organs in the circulatory and respiratory systems.
I can explain how circulatory and respiratory systems work together.
I can identify the changes in an animal due to changes in these systems.

Objectives: Students will be able to identify the functions of the respiratory system.
Students will be able to identify the functions of the circulatory system.
Students will be able to identify organs in the respiratory and circulatory system.

This lesson is very inquiry based. Yet they will be following through their dissection guide.
Plan of Action (Time included):

Hook: 3 min
What part in the oral cavity from Day 1 is crucial to the success of the respiratory system?
Epiglotis

Share Objectives for the day: 2 min

By the end of today, we will all be able to identify the organs and parts of the respiratory system. We will also be
able to compare how our respiratory system relates to that of the pig.

If you get far enough to begin on the circulatory tract, we will see how the respiratory and circulatory systems work
together in the body. We will also identify the functions and supply routes of blood.

The Lesson: 35 min total

Set Up: 3 min

Let’s grab our notebooks and open to the dissection guide and your research journal. Make sure you have plenty of
space today. As usual, you need your own table but before we do that we need to clean up our pigs!

What did we pour into our bags with our pigs on Friday? Humectant
What does humectant do? Maintains moisture and is used for preserving

We want to make sure we are careful and do not make a mess. Remember that the internal cavity should have a lot
of fluid in it, so be sure not to spill it on the floors. Take your pig to the sink if necessary.

As you set up your stations, make sure to have your blue handout available. It will help you with identifying organs
and key structures in your pig.

Last week you were all at the end of the digestive tract, so you should be done with everything except measuring
your large intestine and identifying a few key organs. Please finish that up today and then move on to respiratory as
you can.

If you have any questions let me know but remember to let the dissection guide be your guide. It has all the cool
little details about what cartilaginous rings in the trachea are for or a special fact about the lobes of your pigs’ lungs.

Dissection Time: 30 min

Constantly be walking around to answer questions. Always direct them to the dissection guide and make sure they
are following along and not just cutting without thinking.

Having kids look at other students’ pigs to see what they are supposed to is very beneficial. It helps a lost student
see a good example, and it offers a boost to kids’ self-esteem to have their work considered a model of what to do.

Assessment time: 2 min

Give students a ticket out the door to make sure they are not just cutting but actually reading the material in the
guide. The question will depend on how far students get, but a fair expectation is that they all start to look at the
lobes of the lung.

We are going to check for understanding and to make sure you are getting the most out of this lesson.
You all are getting a piece of paper, on it I want you to answer the following question.
Why are the lobes of the lung different sizes?
Or
What is the purpose of the thyroid gland?

Make sure to do this assessment before clean up or time may run out. This is important to be able to gauge where
the students are at.

Clean up: 10 min

With that it is time to clean up. Please follow our usual procedures. Here is the scrap bag for all your parts. You can
now get rid of your large and small intestines. Please bag your pig and clean up your spaces.

I will start with disinfectant spray. The remainder of your time can be used to work on your research journals.

Big Takeaways: 2 min

*optional

See if there is anything the kids found exciting or really interesting today. Anything that peaked their interest.

Knowledge/Skills/Dispositions targeted on this lesson:

A lot of this unit is comparing animal systems to our own, but I want the kids to get some real world experience
through the use of the research journal and dissecting guide. Half of the class is really interested in a medical field
career so I am hoping to grow their interest in that field.
