4.0 DIMENSIONS
Style 177N - Dimensions for Determining Piping System Installation Clearances
Data in the below table is provided for system layout and installation purposes to ensure that adequate clearances
are included in the piping system installation relative to other piping components or the building structure for both roll
grooved and cut grooved pipe.
This is particularly important when the system is free floating, or contains no thrust anchors, and the coupling joints
are installed with the pipe ends butted against the gasket4. If installed in this condition, when the piping is pressurized
the joints will open to their full nominal pipe end separation5. This movement is cumulative and will be most
significant in long runs of piping where multiple flexible couplings are installed in the butted condition.

4.1 DIMENSIONS
Design and Installation - Linear Movement and Angular Deflection
Data in the table below provides the linear movement and joint deflection capabilities of each coupling. These
mechanical properties of the flexible coupling can be used in the design of the piping system to accommodate curves
in the piping system, settlement of the building structure, seismic movement, or thermally induced expansion or
contraction of the piping.
The linear movement7 can be used to accommodate any axial movement of the piping caused by thermally induced
expansion or contraction of the pipe. When used in this manner, thrust anchors must be installed at changes in
direction, at the ends of straight runs, or to divide long runs of pipe into more manageable sections and reduce
movement at branch connections. Reference should be made to Victaulic Publication 26.02 for detailed instructions
regarding determining thrust anchor or guide locations.
The joint deflection8,9 can also be used to accommodate the axial change in length of the piping caused by thermally
induced expansion or contraction of the piping through the controlled deflection of offsets at existing changes in
direction of the piping. Again, refer to Victaulic Publication 26.02 for detailed instructions.

6 This is the actual net linear movement available at each coupling for design purposes as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2.
7 This is the actual net deflection angle available at each coupling listed in degrees as illustrated in Figure 3.
8 This is the actual net deflection angle available at each coupling listed as a slope of the pipe as illustrated in Figure 4.
9 These values are the net amount of linear movement or joint deflection available at the couplings. No further reduction,
as detailed in Victaulic Publication 26.02, is needed to allow for design and installation purposes.

NOTE
• A coupling joint cannot provide the full linear movement and full angular deflection at the same time. If both linear movement and angular deflection are
needed, sufficient couplings must be installed for each purpose. Refer to Victaulic Publication 26. 02 for complete details.

Styles 741 and 743 06.06
Rev P

Product Description
Style 741
Style 741 Vic-Flange® adapter is designed for directly
incorporating flanged components with ANSI CL. 125 or
CL. 150/PN10 and PN16 or Australian Standard Table
E bolt hole patterns into a grooved pipe system. Sizes
2 – 12”/50 – 300 mm are hinged for easy handling
with integral end tabs which facilitate assembly. Sizes
Style 741
2 − 12” sizes/50 − 300 mm
Exaggerated for clarity 14 – 24”/350 – 600 mm are cast in four (4) identical
segments which are interconnected as assembly is
completed.
The design incorporates small teeth inside the key
shoulder I.D. to prevent rotation (excluding 159 mm size).
These teeth should be removed when Vic-Flange adapter
is utilized with a Victaulic Series 700 grooved end
butterfly valve, Schedule 5 pipe or plastic pipe.
Vic-Flange adapter Style 741 is not recommended for
use with Victaulic Series 709 butterfly valves (contact
Victaulic for recommendations). They may only be used

14 − 24” sizes/350 − 600 mm 2 – 4”/50 – 100 mm fitted with standard or lever-lock
handles. Vic-Flange adapter must be assembled so it
does not interfere with handle operation.
Style 743
Vic-Flange Style 743 flange-to-groove adapter permits
direct connection of ANSI Class 300 flanged components
into a grooved system. The two-piece, hinged housing
engages into the pipe groove and bolts directly to any
standard flanged component. The conventional bolt hole
pattern allows for easy, fast assembly. Style 743 rotates

360º for proper alignment of bolt holes before tightening.
Approvals/Listings Vic-Flange gaskets utilize the Victaulic pressure-
responsive design, sealing on the pipe end and directly
to the opposing flange face. No standard flange gasket is
required.
See Victaulic publication 10.01 for details
See Victaulic publication 02.06 for portable water approvals if applicable. Style 743 is designed to mate with raised-face flanges,
but can be used with flat-face flanges by removing the
raised projections on the outside face of the flange.

4 Working Pressure and End Load are total, from all internal and external loads, based on standard weight (ANSI) steel pipe, standard roll or cut grooved in
accordance with Victaulic specifications. Contact Victaulic for performance on other pipe.
5 Total bolts required to be supplied by installer, may be ordered from Victaulic.

General Notes
Longer bolts required when flange utilized with wafer-type valves.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Style 741 Vic-Flange adapters provide rigid joints when used on pipe with standard cut or roll groove dimensions and consequently allow no
linear or angular movement at the joint. When used with Victaulic Series 700 butterfly valves, plastic pipe or light wall metallic pipe, small teeth in I.D. of key section
should be removed and may be used on one side of the valve. Contact Victaulic for information on ISO 2084 (PN10); DIN 2532 (PN10) and JIS B-2210 (10K)
flanges.
WARNING: FOR ONE TIME FIELD TEST ONLY, the Maximum Joint Working Pressure may be increased to 11/2 times the figures shown.
