Final Major Project

My client:
The client I have chosen is Raindance film festival in which Will and I are planning to
enter our Short Film. Here is information, rules, categories and a general overview on
what we need to produce:

Raindance is the largest independent UK film festival. In 2019 it will hold its 27th Film
Festival in which I plan on entering my Short Film. Raindance has been officially
recognised by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences USA, the BATFA's
(British Academy of Film and Television Arts) and the British Independent Film Awards.
It is stated on the website that selected shorts may qualify for Oscar® and BAFTA
considerations. Raindance is a known competition and is a great way to prove our
skills. I feel if it goes well we may be able to successfully win an award.
I plan on entering my short film into a few categories, I plan on applying to;
-Best Screenplay
-Best Cinematography
-Best Performance
-Best Short of the Festival
-Best UK Short
The reason I want to win best screenplay is because to create a good short film I want
to create a great screenplay that appeals to my Drama genre. I feel that Will and I
putting our brains and skill together is a great recipe to create a good screenplay.
Best cinematography is more the category we want to win for Will. Will has taken it
upon himself to really focus on his cinematography this unit and prioritise the fact
that he is behind the camera. We want an opportunity to include a lot of techniques
that suit the scene and prove Will's skill behind the camera. Best performance isn't the
most important award for us as we are not going to be hiring a lot of professional
actors but more the fact we want to have realistic actors that suit the scene and film
and hope that the performance is good to create a realistic short film. Best UK short
and Short of the Festival are both awards we are passionate to win and are awards I
feel we have the capability of winning. I think we have the capability to create an
intense realistic short film that could be recognised, and if we put all our effort into it
we have the chance to win. Overall we have the possibility to win a couple of different
categories and need to make sure each element of our short film is strong enough to
compete for these awards.

Outline of Idea:
- Starts with Protagonist looking at deceased girlfriends grave (silhouette).
- Protagonist sitting at bar, to snap him out bartender slams beer glass in front of him
(VFX - Squad Flashing next to him in flashbacks).
- Protagonist is sleeping, wakes up to knock on door, falls off bed, picks up beer, goes
to door and the Helper is at the door. Helper will tell protagonist he has information,
protagonist will pin him against railing and (very angry) he will tell him to go away
until Helper mentions the antagonist.
- Catch up chat, leading to helper talking about a high priority target who may have
information on the Antagonist.
- At a remote location, the helper and protagonist will stealthily take out guards (POV
infrared shots) the protagonist will run up and start interrogating the HPT, a bit too
brutally. The helper will pull him to the side and tell him to 'chill out'.
- House in which the protagonist and helper argue about self-control, very bad
argument. Protagonist storms out.
- Protagonist walking down the street, shady guy following him. Protagonist
eventually pins him to a wall and questions his intentions. Nerdy guy says he has
information. Protagonist calls Helper and tells him to meet at the bar.
- In the bathroom of the bar, both helper and protagonist interrogate him and
question his background. Nerdy guy spills the beans and says that he want to help,
and was forced into helping Ghost Organisation.
- Go out of the bathroom and realise that there is more people than before - Bar
fight.
- Once the bar fight has ended, protagonist states 'We have to get our stuff get out
of here, because they probably have the entire area covered, I know a guy that can
get us off the grid'.
- All three rush back to the house the nerdy guy questions the promise ring on his
hand. Protagonist has a little snap, grab some things, escape the building and whilst
running, helper calls tech woman and says 'I have got a favour'.
- Get to woman's house, find her on computer and she treats us like kids, Protagonist
asks for beer, woman says 'we don't drink in this house, water would be good for you
;)'
- Prep montage, Haircut Montage, Suit up scene (contacts on scene)
- Helper and Protagonist will enter the facility take out a bunch guards, enter the
Antagonists room they lose comms, and get behind cover as the antagonist is
focusing fire on them. They need to figure out a way to escape, nerdy guy sneaks
over to them, says he has a plan to escape, but needs a distraction. Protagonist gives
Helper the promise ring, tells him to escape on his call. Protagonist calls out
antagonist for a fist fight, protagonist proceeds to get beaten up, calls for the friends
to run whilst he is on the floor, Antagonist aims gun towards the nerdy guy.
Protagonist jumps up to cover the gun with his shoulder. Gets shot and falls to the
floor. Helper and nerdy guy escape. Antagonist looks down at Protagonist in rage, the
protagonist looks up and smiles, cut to black on the gun shot.
- Helper looking at the protagonist's grave (mirror scene)
-Post credit scene of torture.

Rules and Regulations of Competition:

The competition comes with a few rules that put limits to what is we can produce, this
is beneficial to us as it sets a boundaries that we have to meet. The 1st rule is about
submission deadlines. Early deadline is the 26th April 2019 and the late deadline 17th
May 2019, this is good for us as we will be able to enter our Short Film into the
competition before the late deadline as our final edit has to be done by the 3rd of
May 2019. As it says below there is now priority with early access, but it is encouraged
therefore we should hopefully have no problems applying. 2nd rule is that the film
must submit via online screeners and not trough DVD. Another rule that comes with
this is once you have sent a link there is no chance to change it or send a more
updated version of the Short. All of the submissions must have been completed post
January 1st to be eligible for the competition, there isn't any form of premiere policy
either so we do not have to worry about that. Again for rule 4 our short is able to be
screened at other festivals or online and has no policy forbidding this, therefore we
are still able to upload this to YouTube. Number 5 states that it is 18 certified
screening which is not a problem as by the time it is being screened I will be 18 years
old as my birthday is 30th May. There is a submission fee which is non-refundable
which should not be a problem as between us, Will and I can pay for this. The 7th rule
just talks about shipping. In the 8th rule it is stated that films are selected through
quality of narrative and production values and the independent nature of the
production. We should be eligible for this as we plan on making a good quality video
and story when it comes to our production. The next important rule is 10, which states
that we need to provide a Digital Cinema Package in order to be screened as well as a
Blu-ray backup, it must be clearly titled but will be used as a backup only. The DCP
must also be received no later than 20 days prior to the scheduled screening date.
The penultimate rule states that screenings are scheduled at the discretion of
raindance, therefore raindance is able to make changes to this schedule when or if
they need and won’t be liable for costs claimed. The last rule states that if shortlisted
for a Jury Prize, online screeners must be available for the duration of the festival.

Target Audience:
The target audience we have chosen is a BBFC Regulated 15. What this means is if we
stick to the guidelines of BBFC our Short Film will be for a 15+ audience. This is
probably most suitable for us due to the idea we have, and social media distribution.
From my survey it is obvious that the majority of people that were active towards my
survey were from the age range of 15-18. I did have a lot from 19-25 so creating this
for an audience suited towards the 15 is probably our best choice.
