"Q garrison place. a military Post or

fortified settlement in areas currently
or originally under Spanish control."

Nestled at the base of San Francisco's famed Golden Gate

Bridge lies a ldOO-acre military installation known since the

arrival of the first white man as the Presidio of San Francisco.

Still occupied by the army. the Presidio is the oldest active

military installation in the United States and one of the two

original settlements in San Francisco.

Three banners have flown over the Presidio ——— the Flag of

the Spanish Conquistadores, the flag of the Republic of Mexico

and our own Stars and Stripes.

Throughout its existence the purpose of the Presidio has

remained constant: to be guardian of the Golden Gate and the Bay

of Saint Francis.

Today the Presidio acts as proprietor to 32 military

organizations Providing logistical and administrative support to

the tenant occupants. In addition to the renowned Letterman

Hospital and the western Hedical Institute of Research, the

Presidio_is 8150 HeadQUartere for the Sixth Army Command which

555‘: Merr._-5e heme -C-s James; -. ‘ ' '. I35 >1 ['00
administers the 12 western states. Three thousand military
personnel are stationed at the base along with 3.000
civilian
personnel.

The national significance

of the Presidio has been
established by landmark status.
In 1963 it was officially
designated as a Registered
National Historic Landmark. In
keeping with the concept
of the Presidio as an open
post. a
seven-mile trail covering 2? points of historic interest was
opened to Visitors two years later.

EQQNQING OE IfiE EQEEIDIO

The story of the Presidio begins

with the Spanish. In 1??6
Lt. Jose Horace established the
site at the request of the
Viceroy of New Spain in an effort to strengthen Spain's position

in California. The first inhabitants of the Presidio were 13

soldiers and their families, several civilian settlers. a few
servants and a gaggle of cattle and mules.

Until the beginning of the 19th Century the residents were

a relatively happy group. However, when Spain's ability to

support or expand her northern Pacific coast frontier

diminished. life at the Presidio became less attractive.

Frequent damage by earthquakes. heavy rains and harsh winds

began to take an enormous toll.
