Responsible for geotechnical monitoring programme, shotcrete testing and improvement, specificaiton
and tender evaluation for prestressed anchors

SSSP Project Saudi Arabia 1989 / 91

1. Design and execution (as subcontractor) of a large scale rock mechanics test program for site 1.
This site is characterised by medium hard limestones with clay layers in bedding planes and distinct
subvertical faults. The test program comprised large scale compression tests, shear tests and plate
load tests plus a laboratory test program. In a later stage co-ordinator for a test program on dynamic
properties of the rock mass (as a basis for weapon-load Design)
2. Lead Engineer for rock excavation and support Design for site 1 including static and dynamic
loads. Guidance of 2D and 3D static and dynamic numerical analyses.
3. Design reviewer and responsible engineer for Design implementation and verification for all sites
(including sandstones and granites)

Pergau HEP Malaysia

Assistance to the lead Design company at the orientation of the cavern complex, assessment of cavern
stability and Design of the support for a large wedge created by a fault intersection the Powerhouse
cavern.

Ertan HEP China

Review of cavern complex stability for the Contractor during execution (because of major problems
with rock burst and stability). Performance of 3-D stress analysis of the whole complex to predict
further critical zones during progressive execution. Expert opinions of stability and remedial measures.

CERN package 2, Switzerland / France

Design leader for 2 large caverns separated by a concrete pillar. Total span about 50m. Rock mass is
molasse (sequence of marls, partly weak and tectonised and sandstones). Rock mass cover above
caverns 20m plus 50m moraine, water table near surface. Guidance of various 2D and 3D numerical
analyses, partly complex simulations of rock structures, water conditions (effective stress), swelling and
creep of marl layers, etc.
