Questions 64-67 refer to the following article.
TOWN MEETING TO DISCUSS TUNNEL PROJECT
The Clarion City Council will hold a meeting this week to discuss the proposal to build a tunnel under
the Central River. The tunnel would not replace the existing bridge but would relieve traffic
congestion on the roads that link downtown Clarion to suburbs on the south side of the river. Yanco
Builders, seen as the firm likely to be given the building contract, has been working with council
members ever since preliminary studies of the tunnel project began. A spokesperson for Yanco,
Donald Young, stated, “This tunnel will have a tremendous impact on the people of Clarion. Traffic
conditions will improve, noise pollution will be reduced, and the struggling downtown shops and
restaurants will see a growth in business. If people in the suburbs can get downtown more easily, they
will go there for their shopping and entertainment.”
Page

Some opponents of the tunnel project question whether the tunnel will actually reduce traffic jams. A
citizens group calling itself Responsible Traffic Solutions (RTS) has been pushing for a temporary
delay in the project so that further studies can be conducted. RTS, which has requested a meeting with
city council members, believes that the city’s shortage of public transportation might be a more
important issue to address when considering how to reduce traffic on the bridge. The group has also
expressed concern over the loss of green space along the river. Says an RTS spokesperson, “To take
away the little green space the city has would be harmful to plant and animal species that live along
the southern edge of the city and would take away from the natural charm of the area.

64. What is true about the city council?

(A) It has voted to approve the tunnel project. (C) It plans to build more shops and restaurants
(B) It has been working with Yanco Builders. (D) It has met with the leaders of RTS.
65. What did Mr. Young say about the tunnel project?
(A) It will be completed later than expected. (C) It will replace the existing bridge.
(B) It will create more jobs in the suburbs. (D) It will be good for the downtown
economy.
66. Why has RTS asked that the project be delayed?
(A) It wants citizens to vote on the project. (C) It wants more studies to be done.

Tips for shopping through the mail

Every year, thousands of people successfully order goods from mail order catalogs. However, some more
unfortunate individuals find that the goods they ordered look nothing like the pictures, arrive damaged, or
don't arrive at all. Here are some tips to help protect yourself when you shop through the mail.

 Before placing your first order, ask around. Have your friends or family used this catalog before?
How was their experience? Were they satisfied with the goods and service? Would they use the
company again?
 Read all available information, including the return policy. Look for companies that offer a no-
questions asked return policy. Check whether you will have to pay postage if you need to return
goods.
 Always include shipping costs and sales tax in the final price when comparing costs. In some cases,
the shipping costs can really add up. Make sure you know exactly what you are paying for.
Page
11/19
Code: 1895
 How long you will have to wait for your order. If you need something in a hurry, shopping by mail
might not be the best option.
 Keep records of your orders, including the catalog name, address, telephone number, and the date
that you placed the order. Of course, you should also keep track of items ordered, operator name,
and expected date of delivery.
 If you encounter any problems with a mail-order company, contact a consumer advocacy group.
You can easily find telephone numbers for such groups in the telephone directory or on the
Internet.

68. What should be included in the final price?

(A) Shipping and insurance costs (C) Return cost and taxes
(B) Sales tax and insurance (D) Sales tax and shipping costs
69. What should a buyer keep record of?

(B) If you need something quickly (D) If you don’t like the catalog
71. Who should you contact if you have problems?

From Marcus Tan <mtan@wos_singapore.com>

To Worldwide Office Solutions Singapore Team <employees@wos_singapore.com>
Subject Prototype Testing
Date August 12, 08:35:43

My name is Marcus Tan, and I am the Senior Project Manager in the Research and Development
Department. Currently, one of my teams is in the process of developing ergonomic office supplies for
left-handers. As you are no doubt aware, the large majority of office supplies on the market have been
designed with right-handed individuals in mind. Unfortunately, this makes it difficult for the
approximately 5% of the population who are left-handed to both write and carry out certain tasks, even
simple ones like using scissors. While there are some left-handed products available, there is most
certainly a lack of them, and there is definitely a market for more creative and high- quality products.

At present, we have three prototypes which have reached the testing phase: a pair of scissors, a notebook,
and a computer mouse. Prior to having these products undergo formal testing, we would prefer to conduct
an internal pretest right here at the company. We would appreciate it if any employees - particularly our
left-handed ones - volunteered to participate in a one-hour testing session to be held during the week
beginning on August 23. The testing sessions will take place in the Product Research Department, which
is located on the third floor. We hope that our volunteers will be able to provide input as to the comfort
and ease of use of each item. We are also curious as to whether or not our products provide an advantage
over those which are already on the market.

Employees willing to volunteer should call Joyce Lau, Product Research Coordinator, at extension 203 to
schedule a testing session.

Thank you,

Marcus Tan

Research and Development Department

Dear Mr. Notts

Thank you for your kindness for at least considering to raise my credit card limit,
although unfortunately you were not able to accept my request. Yes, I do admit that
my credit card payments have not been consistent and are sometimes late. But I really
need the expansion of my credit card limit, therefore I do wish that you will consider
my case again on the 1st of January. And I hope that by then my credit rating will be
better so that you will accept my request.

Sincerely,

Bill

My name is Nancy Abbot, and I work at Quigley Consulting, which is located on the second floor
of the Fiji Office Building. Due to the number of break-ins that have been occurring in this
building and in others nearby, we are concerned about our company’s security. We therefore
request that you install an additional lock on the front door of the office. As there are five
employees here, we will need that many keys as well as the original. I would appreciate your
sending me an estimate of how much this will cost before the end of the business week.

Sincerely,

Nancy Abbot
