RESOURCES

FOCUS
Students will learn about digital storytelling. I will explain that digital
storytelling is a short form of media that is used to tell a
story.
INSTRUCTIONAL
STEPS Open class with short lecture on information about digital storytelling.
Students will be told how to create a digital story listing and describing
key events of WW1. On Wednesday, they will research the events, put
them in order and find pictures of the events for their story. In their story
they will need to describe what happened at each event in three to five
sentences by recording their voice and pairing it with the pictures. The
platforms that can be used are PowerPoint, Prezi or iMovie to create the
digital story. Each event should also include at least two pictures
illustrating the event. Toward the end of class, I will explain that this is a
two-day project. On Thursday, they will start writing their scripts,
recording their stories and completing the projects. Once they have
completed the project, they should turn in their digital story on Google
Classroom.

CLOSURE
To close class, I will ask the following question: “What is an event that
took place in WW1?” I will call on a few students to answer the question
out loud.
REFLECTION
As I was preparing for this lesson, I had some concerns that my students
would not be able to understand the lesson objectives. I also had
concerns that I would not be able to explain the lesson in a clear way.
This was not the case. I encouraged them to be creative with this
project. They created original photos, used voices for the different
people involved, and added interesting facts about the time period. I
think the students enjoyed the creative opportunities they could take
with this project.

One challenging aspect of this project was the actual recording of the
student’s voices. Most of the students could not record their voices on
PowerPoint or Prezi. There was a safety software set up on their
computer by the school that would not grant them access to the
microphone. Because of this, we had to move the due date to a later
day. This also caused some of my students with perfectionist tendencies
to panic, but I also think this was a good lesson for them to practice
flexibility. After we got through that issue, everything went pretty
smooth.

at each event in three to five sentences by recording your voice and pairing it with the
pictures. You can use PowerPoint, Prezi or iMovie to create your digital story. Each
event should also include at least two pictures illustrating the event. On Thursday, you
will start writing your scripts, recording your stories and completing your projects. Once
you have completed the the project, you will turn in your digital story on Google
Classroom.
