SENIOR PROJECT SELF-EVALUATION

Directions: Utilize this worksheet to help evaluate yourself and your project. Be as complete and
descriptive as possible. This self-evaluation should give the scoring team and your teacher a clear
picture of what you accomplished in your project.

Name - Project Start Date – January 30, 2019

Title of Project - Project Completion Date -

1. In 40 words or more describe who your project benefited and how. In other words, what was the
impact of your project? Be specific.
My project was all about Virginia Beach’s transportation and to some extent the overall transportation
system of Hampton Roads. Therefore my project would only indirectly benefit the people of Virginia Beach
specifically those that on Shore Drive and young drivers in the Northern Virginia Beach area. Although it
can not be ignored that the vast majority of people that came to my senior project were seniors and juniors
from First Colonial High School, and thus those that came and were informed benefited the most overall.
Those that came to my project will have a better understanding of the history and infrastructure behind
Virginia Beach’s transportation system. By learning about how feeder roads were the students and parents
that attended can drive safer knowing all the dangerous options on those roads. By interacting through the
balance test, those same students learned about the dangers of distracted driving. After my address to the
city council even if they turn down my resolution to change the speed limit I will still have brought attention
to the issue.

2. In at least 40 words explain how the project challenged you. How was this a stretch for you? Be
honest. If it was not really a stretch for you, explain why you chose not to take the opportunity to
challenge yourself.
I would say that it isn't a stretch for me yet. I say yet because the most difficult part of my
project as yet to occur. On May 6th I will go to the city council and deliver a short speech on my
project and plead for the council to change the speed limit on a road. This will be a challenge for
me because I will be in front of government official and all meetings are recorded and aired on
television. I will have to defend my reasoning, credibility and the necessity behind my project to
the officials. I will obviously be nervous and uneasy about defending my position in front of other
people
3. List and then describe 5-8 fundamental ideas/concepts/skills of your project, which you
learned/enhanced during your project. If you cannot think of 5-8, just list and describe what you
can.
Driving safer; 1. I have been coming to complete stops more often sense doing my research
on this project. I have also been noticing how often others do not come to a complete stop at stop
signs. 2. I actually have been going the speed limit on most of the roads I drive on. This allowed
me to notice all the drivers that refuse to obey this rule, especially on Shore Drive where I noticed
several drivers exceeding speeds of over 55mph. 3. I’ll admit it i have used my phone while driving,
usually just to change the song while I listen to music while coming and going, However lately I
have just put it on a playlist and set it face down allowing me not to worry about any notifications.
4. I became extremely focused on all the cars in my vicinity, after conducting research on traffic
and driver tendencies. This allowed me to be able to predict the trajectories of cars coming and
going in front of me and being able to recognize which cars are aiding the flow of traffic and which
are making it more difficult.
Public speaking 5. Being able to find a casual yet informative tone and style for presenting
in front of my peers and adults about an important topic is a tough skill to master. 6. Sending and
receiving emails from officials forced me to learn how to conform to modern and professional
writing standards.

4. List and describe 4-8 problems/obstacles/issues you encountered in your project, and briefly
describe how you solved each. If you cannot think of 4-8, just list and describe what you can. If
you did not solve the problem, then tell why.
1.Being able to accept the fact that officials either do not care or don't have the time for your senior
project and to move on. 2. Being able to determine and research what human references you can
contact that will aid your topic. 3. Organizing and creating an event plan and schedule while
coordinating location, food, attendees, and decorations for an occasion. 4. There were little to know
laws regarding a a city’s law as all cities have different variables. This lead me to do in depth
research and while I did not discover any specific laws I found numerous research papers on traffic
and transit strategies. These strategies lead me to use the “ 85th Percentile” rule which while not a
law is commonly used to suggest a new speedlimti for a road.

5. List all people who helped you on the project and briefly describe the help given.

6. How does your completed project compare to the picture you had in mind when you started the
project? Explain the reason behind any changes from your proposal.

In all honestly I did not have a set plan on how to convey my project
information to an audience until three weeks out from my set date to host. I knew that I definitely
wanted to have panal at the start and I knew that whatever i ended up doing would need to be centralized
around Shore Drive.. However after thinking it over i realized that due to the controversial nature of
my topic it might deter government officials from being associated it. I never intended to have a series
of stations to inform the attendee about my project or a kahoot game. However the stations
corresponded the intended information that would be tested on the kahoot quiz better than any public
panel could attempt to.

7. If given the opportunity, explain what you would have done differently now that you speak from
experience?
I would have chosen a different counselor to aid me with my project. I didn't make use of Officer
wilburn's references in their entirety and i made the decision early in my planning methods without
thinking of other options. I should have chosen my youth group leader Casey Heron (listed above).
Heron works at an architectural engineering company for the city. He ended up providing me with
better ways to curve traffic than i could have thought. I also would have contacted a third traffic
engineer to give me a more diverse opinion on how to solve traffic. I also wish I had contacted
Brain Solis ( listed above) about an interview more persistently than originally sending just one
email.

8. Beyond the project itself, what did you learn about yourself? What did you get out of the experience
in terms of personal growth?

I learned that I am a huge procrastinator. I am a person that unless held a gunpoint by a deadline I will not
actively due assignments until the last of the allotted time. However through this procrastination i also
learned that I can get an enormous amount of work done, for example I flushed out 13 pages of research
paper in under 16 hours burning the midnight oil. I also learned that I need to create a plan in order to solve
the given situation. I need to become more independent from my parents, I rely on them for to much, i will
be going to college soon and i need to bridge this gap.

9. Reflecting on the total amount of time and effort that you put into this opportunity, and reflecting
on the overall quality of the final product, what grade would you give yourself on the project? Be
honest with yourself! Justify the evaluation of your grade in at least 25 words.
Grade:B

Justification:
Let me be the first to say that this was not a normal topic to choose. While traffic is a problem that everyone
who drives encounters, it is rarely looked into with such analysis. Even though there are scarce laws
pertaining to commuter transit and traffic I should have included more legal aspects to it. I feel that a C+ is
actually more fitting but i believe we were told we can't do plus or minus. I am also basing the finished
product of of my teachers initial skepticism on the topic. What turned into questioning the feasibility of
basing a project around a slow speed limit turned into something much bigger and frankly better. No
interview was conducted for the paper, instead I referenced a video. Numerous mechanical errors were mad
on the paper which with more time and effort could easily have been fixed. I believe that my project is
benefiting the people of Virginia Beach, I believe that I have made the streets of my city safer through this
project and that should stand for something. I think my project is unique to VB and her citizens because it
is such a local issue and not something as distant as the opioid crisis or extensive shark finning; and that is
not to say that those topics are not important it is just that this topic can be literally driven into you. It was
not my best work and does definitely not deserve an A however given the circumstances I had to encounter
i believe that my grade is above a C and thus a B.
