My name is Brianna Miller and I come from the small town of Kellogg, MN. The coolest
thing about me is that I have a twin! I grew up on my family’s dairy farm along with my five
siblings, including my twin brother. My parents taught us responsibility and built our strong
work ethic by including us in the farm work. We all attended a private, Catholic school in
Wabasha, MN until the sixth grade as it was a K-6 school. We then attended the Wabasha-
Kellogg public school. After graduation, I attended Rochester Community and Technical College
for two years to complete my general classes and then transferred to Winona State to pursue a
degree in Elementary Education. I have always really enjoyed school and admired my teachers.
In fact, many of my teachers throughout my life have been very influential in my decision to go
During school, I stayed very involved through the National Honor Society, the leadership
committee, and many sports. I was a three-sport athlete, playing volleyball, basketball, and
running track. As both a student and an athlete, I was very competitive and motivated to be the
best that I could be. I use my motivation and passion for sports to coach athletes in volleyball. I
have coached at Wabasha-Kellogg for four years at the junior high level, 9th grade level, and
assistant varsity level. I enjoy sharing my knowledge of the game with the athletes to support
them in reaching their goals. Outside of school, I enjoy working on the farm with my family, as
well as reading, listening to music, running, cooking, hunting, and kayaking. I have always
enjoyed working with kids, especially the younger ones. Coming from a big family, I was always
surrounded by children. Spending time with children helped me decide that I wanted to go into
education.
Through volunteering in a Pre-K classroom, I have realized how much energy the
younger grade levels have and how eager they are to be in school. Seeing students having fun
and enjoying school motivates me to be just as excited about school and to help all students find
that motivation to be in school and reach their full potential. In high school I also volunteered as
a teacher’s assistant with the Special Education Department. This experience taught me the value
The most important thing that I have learned as a result of my clinical placements is that
every student is different and therefore learns differently. Being in multiple schools and
classrooms over the last few years, I have observed many different learning styles as well as
Someone who inspired me to be a teacher was one of my own teachers in high school.
Mrs. B was both my teacher and my High school volleyball coach. She was a teacher that
students valued because she made it a point to say hello to everyone in the hallway, making them
feel appreciated. If she knew that a student was struggling she would go out of her way to help
that student, whether that meant helping them with their physics homework or even buying them
a new winter jacket because they didn’t have one. Mrs. B was a very motivated and positive role
model to all of her students and colleagues. Her reassurance and guidance is what convinced me
that I wanted to become a teacher. As a teacher, I will strive to make students feel as respected
