PREFACE

Coal India limited is the world’s largest coal company. It operated with 8
subsidiaries and it’s operation area is all over India and few foreign countries
with new subsidiary name coal videsh.
NCL is generating biggest profit among all subsidiaries. NCL has consistently
been showing an excellent financial performance over the years. The turnover of
the company has risen from Rs 1904.81 crores in 1996-97 to 5455.21 crores in
2007-08.The profit before Tax (PBT) has increased from 728.65 crores (before
contribution to Coal Price Regulation Account) to Rs 2763.75 crores and profit
after Tax (PAT) has risen from Rs 403.65 crores to 1771.66 crores during the
same period

Mining history in this region is very old. The first systematic mining,
however, was started by NCDC in Jhingurda during early sixties. The master plan
of the coalfield (Moher Basin) was prepared by P&D Division of NCDC in
consultation with Soviet Experts. This envisaged construction of large
mechanised opencast mines. The mining activities are going on as per the
master plan provisions. NCL, during successive years has not only achieved
targets of production but also exceeded them.

During 2008-09, coal production was 63.65 Mill Tes. In 2009-10, the target for
coal production is fixed at 66.50 Mill. Tes. . NCL has excellent record of capacity
utilization , which is around 80.06 % in 2008-09. The productivity in terms of
OMS (out put per man shift) of NCL during 2008-09 was 14.57 Tonnes, which has
been the highest in CIL and during successive years , it is increasing . It is

planned to remove 242.00 Mill Cum of overburden during 2009-10, out of which
140.50 Mill. Cum. will be removed departmentally and rest 101.50 Mill. Cum. is
out sourced under Emergency Coal Production Plan.

Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL) is committed to the Environmental

Conservation and Pollution Control. Environmental Management System (EMS)
has been implemented in all eight operating opencast mines of NCL. The
company has framed its own Environmental Policy and developed Effective
Management Programme to minimize the impact on environment due to
mining operations. Programme has also been adopted to train all employees
with respect to Environmental Awareness and Mitigation Measures.

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE:-

The main objective of my study is to find out satisfaction level of consumer

towards sales and marketing activities of NCL.

SECONDARY OBJECTIVE:-

1-To understand marketing process of NCL.

2-To analyze the requires of NCL consumer regard to

Price, quality and quantity of coal.

Indian coal at the pithead is the cheapest coal in the world. With a low
sulphur content, Indian coal is eco-friendly. CIL’s business plan therefore aims
primarily to translate these strong economic fundamentals of coal into prosperity
for the country and the company.

With eight wholly owned subsidiary companies, operating in as many states,

CIL’s activities comprehensively cover A to Z in coal extraction, identification of
coal reserves, detailed exploration followed by projectisation, design and
implementation of projects and optimizing operations in 465 existing
underground and open cast mines, 17 beneficiation plants and one coal
carbonization plant are some in CIL’s range of activities.

Central Mine Planning & design Institute (CMPDI) is the consultancy wing of CIL,
registered and established as a subsidiary company ,having more than three
decades of experience & expertise in mineral exploration & Resource Evaluation
,Mine Planning & Design, Infrastructure Engineering, Environment, Mineral
beneficiation ,Management Services, Laboratory Services , ICT in Mining
,Specialized services and research and Development . CMPDI offers consultancy
to the outside clients also apart from undertaking in-house consultancy.

CMPDI has multidisciplinary technical professionals who have innovation &

initiative to deliver fast & effective solutions in planning implementations &
management of projects .It is equipped with modern Laboratory facilities for
undertaking of various analytical works to supplement its services.CMPDI is
recognized as "preferred " Consultant by Indian and overseas clients including
Government and Private Sector, United Nations Agencies and International
Financial Institutes. CMPDI is registered with World Bank, Asian Development
Bank And African Development Bank And United Nations Development
Programme (UNDP).CMPDI has prepared over 900 mining project reports with
individual project capacity up to 35.0 Mtpa Opencast Mine. It has also experience
in Mechanised Underground Mining Technology for exploitation of Coal Seams
spanning from 1 metre to 2 metres thickness at different gradients from flat to
75 degrees, with soft to extremely hard coal under varying roof strata
conditions.

CIL welcomes private participation in coal beneficiation. Participation of

International coal mining companies in development of underground coal mines
with modern technology is also receiving CIL’s consideration.

The Government of India, the sole owner of CIL, has sanctioned a major policy
support package which, besides restructuring Government ‘s holding in the
company, has progressively free coal prices from administrative control. Coal
mining is also being opened up to private investment. The implication of the
policy support and sector reforms in terms of CIL’s ability to attract resources

globally is far-reaching. CIL confidently looks forward to its emergence as one of

the largest tax/dividend paying corporate in India by the turn of the century.
