SECONDARY SAFE FLIGHT ANGLE-OF-ATTACK SYSTEM - INSPECTION/CHECK


(Airplanes -0400 thru -0538)
1. General
A. The section that follows contains the inspections and checks for the Secondary (Left) Safe Flight Angle-of-Attack (AOA)
system.
TASK 34-13-05-710
2. Secondary Safe Flight Angle-of-Attack System Check
A. Tools and Equipment.
(1) Fuselage Vane Protractor - 1939-5 or equivalent.
(2) Hydraulic Service Unit - CJMD129-002 or equivalent.
(3) External Power - MH32-200K24M or equivalent.
(4) Jack Pads - 5520151-2 or equivalent.
(5) Tail Stand - CJMD107-004 or equivalent.
(6) Tripod Jack (Nose Gear) - CJMD107-001 or CJMD107-006 or equivalent.
(7) Tripod Jack (Main Gear) - CJMD107-002 or CJMD107-007 or equivalent.
B. Do the Preliminary Test Procedure.
WARNING: Ensure all personnel and equipment are clear of flaps and landing gear areas before moving.
NOTE: Parts of this check require the landing gear to be retracted. If possible, do this check in conjunction
with other checks which require the airplane to be on jacks with hydraulic and electrical power
applied.
(1) Put the DC POWER (SI006), AVIONICS POWER (S509), and PITOT & STATIC ANTI-ICE (SI024) switches to the
OFF position.
(2) Disengage the LH IGN, RH IGN, LH BOOST, RH BOOST, SKID CONTROL, FLT/HR, ANG OF ATTACK, AOA HTR,
and LH AOA HTR circuit breakers.
(3) Lift and the level airplane, to prevent changes in airplane attitude during ground test procedure. Refer to Chapter 7,
Jacking - Maintenance Practices.
(a) The wheels should be clear of the ground to permit gear operation.
(4) Do the installation of the Vane Protractor.
(a) Calibrate the fuselage vane protractor.
1 Put the protractor display unit on the left seat rail, with the unit display facing inboard.
2 Press the ON/OFF switch to ON.
a If the display indicates 0.0 degrees, the protractor is calibrated and no further action is necessary. The
unit is ready for installation on the AOA vane.
b If the display indicates anything other than 0.0 degrees, press the ALT REF button once. Make sure
the legend ALT REF appears under the digits in the LCD display, indicating the protractor is set up to
read angles referenced to fuselage reference line.
(b) Install the protractor display unit in the protractor frame.
(c) Install the complete protractor unit on the AOA vane, by putting the pin, adjacent to the point of the thumbscrew,
into a detent in the aft surface of the AOA vane. Refer to Figure 601
NOTE: Spring loaded feet with rubber tips provide friction to maintain the position of the
vane/protractor unit.
C. Do a check of the Flap Position Transmitter.
WARNING: Ensure that all personnel and equipment are clear of flaps and landing gear areas before moving.
(1) Prior to performing this adjustment, make sure that the that flaps are properly rigged, refer to Chapter 27, Flap
System - Adjustment/Test.
(2) Provide 28.5 VDC electrical power and hydraulic power to airplane from external auxiliary power units.
(3) Put the DC POWER switch to the BATT position.

(4) Put the flaps to the 0 degrees (full up) position.


(a) Get access to the flap position transmitter (RC020) in the aft cabin by removing by removing the panel 272BT,
refer to Chapter 6, Access Plates and Panels Identification - Description and Operation.
1 Install the CJMD234-101 Wire Bundle between electrical connectors (JC009 and PC009) near the flap
position transmitter.
(b) Engage the LH ANG OF ATTACK circuit breaker.
(c) Measure the voltage between test point 1 and 3 (3 is ground).
1 Make sure that the voltage is 12.0 VDC, +0.5 or -0.5 VDC.
(5) Put the flaps to the 15 degrees position.
(a) Measure the voltage between test point 2 and 3 (3 is ground).
(b) Make sure that the voltage is 5.4 VDC, +0.5 or -0.5 VDC. If necessary, adjust the flap position transmitter
(RC020) to get the correct voltage.
(6) Put the flaps to the 35 degrees position.
(a) Measure voltage between test point 2 and 3 (3 is ground).
(b) Make sure that the voltage is 8.8 VDC, +1.0 or -1.0 VDC
(7) Put the flaps to the 0 degrees (full up) position.
(a) Measure the voltage between test point 2 and 3 (3 is ground).
(b) Make sure that the voltage is 1.5 VDC, +0.5 or -0.5 VDC.
(8) Put the flaps to the 7 degrees position.
(a) Measure the voltage between test point 2 and 3 (3 is ground).
1 Make sure that the voltage is 3.5 VDC, +0.5 or -0.5 VDC.
(9) If the voltage obtained at the 0 degree, 7 degree or 35 degree flap position is not within the allowed tolerance,
readjust flap position transmitter as required to obtain an in tolerance reading at that flap position. Do this procedure
again at each remaining flap position to make sure that the that voltage reading is within tolerance.
(10) Disengage the LH ANG OF ATTACK circuit breaker.
(11) Remove the test wire bundle CJMD234-101 and connect JC009 and PC009 electrical connectors.
(12) Engage the LH ANG OF ATTACK circuit breaker.
D. Do a test of the Squat Switch Logic.
(1) Put the airplane as follows:
(a) Flaps to the 35 degrees position.
(b) Landing gear extended.
(c) Squat switch positioned to the IN AIR condition.
(2) Set the angle-of-airflow vane at the 30 degrees position.
(a) Make sure that the copilot's stick shaker comes on.
(3) Retract the landing gear.
(a) Make sure that the copilot's stick shaker stays on.
(4) Extend the landing gear.
(a) Make sure that the copilot's stick shaker stays on.
(5) Put the squat switch to the ON GROUND condition.
(a) Make sure that the stick shaker turns off.
(6) Put the squat switch to the IN AIR condition.
(a) On airplanes -0439 thru -0538 and airplanes -0056 thru -0438 incorporating SB560-34-69.
1 Make sure that the copilot's stick shaker comes on.
(7) Set the angle-of-airflow vane at 10.5 degrees. The logic test is complete.
E. Do a check of the AOA System Component Tolerance.

(1) Make sure that the squat switch is in the IN AIR position, and that the landing gear is extended.
(2) Put the AVIONICS MASTER switch to the ON position.
(3) (Airplanes -0260 and On.) Engage the primary flight display (PFD) circuit breakers.
(4) Get access to the AOA computer under the floorboard panel 271ATC. Refer to Chapter 6, Access Plates and Panels
Identification - Description and Operation.
WARNING: Incorrect adjustment of the AOA computer normalizing switches can cause early or late onset
of stall warning.
(5) Loosen the two screws that attach the access plate, found on the upper surface of the AOA computer, and move the
plate to get access to the test points and AOA normalizing switch (S1), refer to Figure 603.
(a) Slide the plate out of the way to give access to the test points and the AOA normalizing switch (S1), refer to
Figure 603.
(6) Record the current switch segment positions before you continue.
NOTE: The normalization switch adjustment and measurement tests in this section makes sure that
the AOA system components are in tolerance. The switch adjustment and mVDC DVM
measurement in this step must not be confused with the in-flight adjustment that also uses
Table 601. The in-flight adjustment procedure calibrates the system to agree with the flight
properties of the airplane. Thus, you must put the switches to the flight position after you
complete this section.
(7) Make sure that all segments of the AOA normalizing switch (S1), located on the signal summing unit, are in open
position, except for segment 2, which is ON.
(8) Connect the digital voltmeter HI lead to ALPHA test point, and the LO to the GND test point, located on signal
summing unit, adjacent to switch (S1).
(9) Install the AOA protractor if not previously installed, refer to Preliminary Test Procedure.
(10) Set the AOA protractor to 11.8 degrees clockwise and record the DC voltmeter reading in millivolts.
(a) If the recorded reading is between -30mV and +30mV, the switch segments are in the correct position and no
changes are required.
(b) If the recorded reading is outside tolerance of -30mV and +30mV, refer to Table 601 for the closest voltage and
set (S1) switch segments as indicated.
1 Make sure that the DVM reading is between -30mV and +30mV after resetting the switch segment
positions.

(11) Connect the pitot/static test set to the pilot’s and copilot’s pitot/static systems.
(12) Set the airspeed to read 100 knots on PFD.
(13) Put the flaps and the angle-of-attack protractor to each of the different conditions specified inTable 602.
NOTE: To show the output for each setup from Table 602, you must push and hold the LH AOA Press
to Test switch.
(14) (Airplanes -0260 and On.) Disengage the LH ANGLE OF ATTACK circuit breaker and make sure that the AOA fail
annunciation appears on the PFD.
(15) (Airplanes -0260 and On.) Engage the LH ANGLE OF ATTACK circuit breaker and make sure that the AOA fail
annunciation disappears from the PFD.
NOTE: It may be necessary to tap lightly on the AOA indicator if the needle does not immediately
move to the correct position.
NOTE: (Airplanes -0056 thru -0259.) If EFIS is installed, and one symbol generator has been removed
from the airplane, the EADI operating from the MFD backup will not present an accurate
FAST/SLOW indication. This does not constitute a failure of the requirements of this functional
test.
WARNING: Failure to return the switches to the flight setting positions can cause early or late onset of stall
warning.
(16) Return the normalization switch settings to the flight calibration setting recorded on the Safe Flight Placard.
(17) Install the access plate on top of AOA computer and the tighten screws.
(18) Remove the protractor from the AOA vane.

NOTE 1: Angle-of-Attack values for stick shaker operation are for turn-on. Turn-off values are 2 degrees, +1
or -1 degree, less than turn-on values.
NOTE 2: (Airplanes -0056 thru -0259.) Use ADI pointer position; (Airplanes -0439 and On), the top of the white
low speed awareness indicator must align with indicator point.
F. Do a test of the AOA Heater.
(1) Make sure that the that AOA protractor has been removed from the AOA vane.
WARNING: Heated surfaces can achieve high temperature that can cause serious burns. Avoid contact and
allow adequate cooling time.
(2) Put the squat switch in the ON GROUND condition.
(a) Make sure that the PITOT & STATIC ANTI-ICE switch is in the OFF position.
(b) Engage the AOA HTR circuit breaker and make sure that the AOA HTR FAIL annunciator comes on.
NOTE: If the PITOT & STATIC ANTI-ICE switch was ON, and the AOA HTR circuit breaker was
engaged, allow 20 minutes minimum with the switch in the OFF position to allow the AOA

vane to cool down.


(3) Place a drop of water on the center of the flat surface of the AOA vane.
(4) At the same time, put the PITOT & STATIC ANTI-ICE switch to the ON position and start timer.
(a) Make sure that the AOA HTR FAIL annunciator goes off.
(b) Stop the timer when water drop starts boiling or has evaporated.
(c) Record the time value as T1 seconds.
NOTE: Typical T1 = 45 seconds.
(5) Put the PITOT & STATIC ANTI-ICE switch to the OFF position.
(a) Put the squat switch to the IN AIR condition, and allow a minimum of 20 minutes cool-down time.
(6) Place a drop of water on center on the flat surface of the AOA vane.
(7) At the same time, put the PITOT & STATIC ANTI-ICE switch to the ON position and start timer.
(a) Stop the timer when the water drop on the AOA vane starts boiling or has evaporated.
(b) Record the time value as T2 seconds.
NOTE: Typical T2 = 20 seconds.
(8) Put the PITOT & STATIC ANTI-ICE switch to the OFF position.
(a) Make sure that the value of T2 is within 0.3 to 0.8 times T1.
(9) Remove the airplane from jacks and restore all the affected circuit breakers and switches to the normal configuration.

3. Flight Calibration
A. Test Parameters.
(1) Do the flight tests in smooth air, between 10,000 and 17,500 feet mean sea level (MSL).
(2) The airplane ramp weight without fuel, must be known within 50 pounds.
(a) The center-of-gravity (Cg) must be within 1 percent of forward center-of-gravity limit for weight tested during
each check.
NOTE: If the airplane is not flown at correct Cg, airspeed and AOA indications will not match the
chart.
(3) Remove the carpet and the access panel 271ATC to get access to the summing unit. Refer to Chapter 6, Access
Plates and Panels Identification - Description and Operation.
(4) Three tests are required: cruise configuration (flaps at 0 degrees and gear retracted), approach configuration (flaps
at 15 degrees and gear retracted) and landing (flaps at 35 degrees and gear extended) configuration.
(5) The airplane must be stabilized (autopilot ON - ALT HOLD) in level flight with the instrument panel mounted analog
angle-of-attack indicator at 0.6, +0.02 or -0.02, for several seconds at a constant airspeed before reading the
airspeed indicator.
WARNING: Do not allow airspeed to fall below 0.7 units on the angle-of-attack indicator. Slowing the
aircraft below 0.7 with a potentially mis-calibrated AOA system could result in the aircraft
stalling, with little or no warning.
(6) For each test configuration, after the airplane is stabilized in level flight, tap the face of the AOA indicator and
airspeed indicator to overcome friction before taking the instrument reading.
B. Do the In-Flight Adjustments.
WARNING: Improper adjustment of summing unit normalizing switches can cause premature or late onset of
stall warning.
(1) Put the airplane in the landing configuration (flaps at 35 degrees and gear extended).
(2) The airplane must be stabilized (autopilot ON - ALT HOLD) in level flight with the instrument panel mounted analog
angle-of-attack indicator at 0.6, +0.02 or -0.02, for several seconds at a constant airspeed before reading the
airspeed indicator.
(a) Record the airspeed and compare to the curve illustrated in Figure 602 Chart value with airplane IAS. If the

difference is more than +4.0 or -1.0 knots adjust the AOA computer normalization switches.Figure 603
(3) Adjust the right AOA computer normalization switches as follows:
(a) If the indicated airspeed at 0.6 AOA is lower than indicated in Figure 602, reset the AOA computer
normalization switches to increase or decrease the millivolt bias value as shown in Table 601.
NOTE: Increasing the normalization switch setting by 150 mVDC in accordance with Table 601
will increase the indicated airspeed by approximately 1 knot.
(b) After the AOA computer adjustment, let the airplane stabilize in level flight with the AOA indicator at 0.6, +0.02 or
-0.02, for several seconds at a constant airspeed before reading the airspeed indicator.
(c) Make sure that the IAS is within +4.0 or -1.0 knots of the values shown in Figure 602.
(4) Adjust the left AOA computer normalization switches as follows:
(a) Push and hold the test button to display the left AOA computer output.
(b) If the indicated airspeed at 0.6 AOA is lower than indicated in Figure 602, reset the AOA computer
normalization switches to increase or decrease the millivolt bias value as shown in Table 601.
NOTE: Increasing the normalization switch setting by 150 mVDC in accordance with Table 601
will increase the indicated airspeed by approximately 1 knot.
(c) After the AOA computer adjustment, let the airplane stabilize in level flight with the AOA indicator at 0.6, +0.02 or
-0.02, for several seconds at a constant airspeed before reading the airspeed indicator.
(d) Make sure that the IAS is within +4.0 or -1.0 knots of the values shown in Figure 602.
(e) Release the test button.
(5) Make sure that the indicated airspeed versus the fast/slow indicator and/or AOA indicator is correct.
NOTE: The fast/slow pointer is a vertical scale indicator and is displayed on the EADI.
(a) (Airplanes -0260 and On) The top of the Low Speed Awareness (LSA) white tape represents 1.3VS. The speed
corresponding to the top of the white segment of the LSA must agree within +4.0 or -1.0 knots of speeds in
Figure 602.
(6) Check the approach configuration (flaps 15 degrees and gear retracted).
(a) Let the airplane become stable in level flight (autopilot ON-ALT HOLD) with instrument panel mounted analog
AOA indicator at 0.6, +0.02 or -0.02, for several seconds at a constant air speed before reading the airspeed
indicator.
(b) Record the airplane indicated airspeed and compare the value to the chart in Figure 602 for the current gross
weight and configuration.
1 The tolerance for approach configuration is +3.0 knots or -3.0 knots from curves shown inFigure 602.
(c) Press and hold the test button to display the left AOA computer output.
(d) Let the airplane become stable in level flight with instrument panel mounted analog AOA indicator at 0.6, +0.02
or -0.02, for several seconds at a constant air speed before reading the airspeed indicator.
(e) Make sure that the IAS is within +3.0 or -3.0 knots of the values shown in Figure 602.
(f) Record the airspeed and release the test button
(7) Check the cruise configuration (flaps 0 degrees and gear retracted).
(a) Let the airplane become stable in level flight (autopilot ON-ALT HOLD) with instrument panel mounted analog
AOA indicator at 0.6, +0.02 or -0.02, for several seconds at a constant air speed before reading the airspeed
indicator.
(b) Record the airplane indicated airspeed and compare the value to the chart in Figure 602 for the current gross
weight and configuration.
1 The tolerance for cruise configuration is +4.0 knots or -3.0 knots from curves shown inFigure 603.
(c) Push and hold the test button to display the left AOA computer output.
(d) Let the airplane become stable in level flight with instrument panel mounted analog AOA indicator at 0.6, +0.02
or -0.02, for several seconds at a constant air speed before reading the airspeed indicator.
(e) Make sure that the IAS is within +3.0 or -3.0 knots of the values shown in Figure 602.
(f) Record the airspeed and release the test button

(8) If accuracy requirements in landing configuration, approach configuration and cruise configuration are not obtained,
do the calibration switch procedure again. Do the airspeed measurements for all three configurations again, and
make sure that the values are in tolerance.
WARNING: Improper adjustment of the summing unit normalizing switches can cause early or late onset of
stall warning.
(9) After you get satisfactory flight test results, write the AOA computer normalizing switch settings on the AOA
calibration switch placard, Safe Flight P/N 56501-16 with an "X" to represent the switch segments that are in the ON
position in the correct box and put the placard on the shelf next to the AOA computer where it is clearly visible.

4. Ice Mode Check
A. Do a check of the Ice Mode.
(1) Lift or use squat switch boxes to put the airplane in the air mode.
(2) Put the AOA vane in a streamlined position.
(3) Put the DC POWER (SI006) switch to the ON position.
(4) Push and hold the LH AOA Press to Test switch.
(5) Make sure that the AOA indicator is reading between 0.1 and 0.8.
(a) Adjust the AOA vane, if necessary, to get the reading between 0.1 and 0.8.
(6) Wait a minimum of three minutes for time delay to switch AOA to the IN AIR mode.
(7) Turn the Left Engine Anti-Ice switch to the ON position.
(a) The AOA indicator reading will increase by 0.05 to 0.1.
(b) Check the wiring from the Anti-Ice switch to the AOA computer if the indication is not correct.
(8) Turn the Left Engine Anti-Ice switch to the OFF position.
(a) The AOA indicator reading will decrease by 0.05 to 0.1.
(b) Check the wiring from the Anti-Ice switch to the AOA computer if the indication is not correct.
(9) Turn the Right Engine Anti-Ice switch to the ON position.
(a) The AOA indicator reading will increase by 0.05 to 0.1.
(b) Check the wiring from the Anti-Ice switch to the AOA computer if the indication is not correct.
(10) Turn the Right Engine Anti-Ice switch to the OFF position.
(a) The AOA indicator reading will decrease by 0.05 to 0.1.
(b) Check the wiring from the Anti-Ice switch to the AOA computer if the indication is not correct.
(11) Release the LH AOA Press to Test switch.
(12) Put the DC POWER (SI006) switch to the OFF position.
NOTE: Successful completion of this test verifies that the AOA system properly switches between the
Ice Mode and the Normal Mode schedules.
