DUAL PURPOSE DISASTER PREVENTION MACHINE

I. INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES

The Philippines is one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world.

Each year more than 20 typhoons enter the Philippines, and the damage is often
extensive. Pampanga, as one of the places around the country prone to floods is
a disturbing catastrophe.

Floods have large social consequences for communities and individuals.

As most people are well aware, the immediate impacts of flooding includes loss
of human life, damage to property, destruction of crops, loss of livestock, and
deterioration of health conditions owing to waterborne diseases such as typhoid
fever, cholera, leptospirosis and hepatitis A. On the other hand, clogged water
drainages due to improper waste disposal as one of the primary causes of floods
should be provided an immediate response. If not, this will cause soil, water and
air pollution that contributes to the creation of greenhouse gas effects.

With all the given facts and issues above, the aim of this case study is to
provide a functional solution that would efficiently deal with an eco-friendly
machine. The researchers came up with an idea of generating a water filtering
and waste segregating machine to provide a significant response to the society’s
issue that is in need to be worked out. The function of this machine is to filter
floods and turn it into clean water that can be drink and be use in our daily lives.
Aside from this, the machine’s another function is to segregate wastes
accordingly into three categories: plastic bottles, plastics and metals. How it is
done will be discussed on the next page.

II. SCOPE AND ITS TARGET BENEFICIARIES

The water filtering and waste segregating machine will provide its service
to the Pampanga community for a while. If this machine came into success, it will
extend its excellent service to different places around the country, or better,
around the world. This invention will
particularly benefit the people and the
environment, avoiding water drainages
from destruction due to wastes. Preventing
floods through the water suction will
decrease damages to property and
destruction of crops, as well as the possibility of water-drone diseases or worst,
death among the citizens. In addition, after the suction of flood and the filtering
process, the clean water delivered through a pipe, down to the ground will serve
as a source of clean water for hand well pumps that is indeed purified and
drinkable. Furthermore, the automatic waste
segregation function of this machine is done
through a scanner to detect plastics and
bottles, while as of metals or steels, the
machine will be using a magnet. The machine
contains three pathways for these three waste
categories which hold up a capacity of 100 kilograms only. A facilitator should be
assigned to facilitate the wastes’ storage area. The machine is rechargeable and
it’s safe to use even if it gets wet during its functions procedure.

III. MATERIALS TO USE

For filtering materials, the machine will be using three natural mediums:

1. Charcoal (Activated fined-charcoal)

The carbon in charcoal helps remove toxins.

Charcoal filters out particles down to 1 micron,
including nitrogen oxide, lead, and sulfur oxide. Aside
from this, activated charcoal can add important
minerals, such as calcium, magnesium and iron back
into your water to improve the water quality.

2. Coconut

Coconut filters water by absorbing it through

layers of fiber. Commercial water filters often use
coconut carbon filters to remove toxins and particles.
The coconut husks, whether used commercially or in a
do-it-yourself filter system, trap most particles, toxins
and parasites, including cryptosporidium and giardia.

3. Sand

The use of sand for water filtration dates

back 2,000 years. The Greeks and Romans used
sand to remove sediment from the water in their
pools and bathhouses. Sand can filter out particles
as small as 25 microns.

For the waste segregating function, the machine will contain the following:

1. Waterproof Scanner

This scanner will be programmed to detect

plastics and plastic bottles separately, as it
segregates them automatically and bring them to
their respective trash bins (wastes’ storage area).
This is to help the machine to function easier, faster,
and efficiently.

2. Metal detector

This is an electronic instrument which detects the presence of metal

nearby. It is useful for finding metal inclusions
hidden within objects, or metal objects buried
underground. They often consist of a handheld
unit with a sensor probe which can be swept
over the ground or other objects. Magnets are
not recommendable to use because according to
a research, they begin to lose their magnetism at
temperatures above 80 degrees Celsius, so they are not suited to high-
temperature applications. At 312 degree Celsius, they lose their magnetism
altogether. In addition, they are highly susceptible to corrosion. So, this is a
threat not just for the functioning of the machine, but also for the possible
destruction it may cause to the community. Metal detectors are safer to use.

For the overall features of the machine, we will be using a stainless steel.
But, with regards to the metal detector function, we will program the device to
exclude the machine in detecting its target objects.
