Williamsport High School Curriculum Chart

Reflection:
To create this curriculum chart, I spoke with at least one teacher via email or in person for each course
listed above, reviewed course syllabi in the staff drive, and reviewed the modules for each course created by the
content specialists at the Board of Education for Washington County Public Schools. For AP courses, I spoke
with the teachers and reviewed the AP Board documents. For the most part, teachers were willing to sit down
and have a five to ten-minute conversation with me. A few teachers simply told me to review their syllabus or
online curriculum, while others spoke in depth with me about what their course consists of. I had extensive
conversations with the science teachers, especially Mrs. Gainor, the department chair and AP Environmental
instructor. I felt that I knew very little about the science courses, so I scheduled a specific meeting with Mrs.
Gainor to learn more. I also spent more time with the technology education teachers. Williamsport High School
is a STEM school, but I do not spend much time in the hands-on STEM classes. I wanted to learn more about
the curriculum and what hands-on projects the students were working on.
As always, some teachers were more talkative and open than others. I felt that a few teachers didn’t see
the purpose of our conversations. Also, I wanted to include the Child Development curriculum in my chart
because I felt that I could support those specific courses well. However, after several attempts to meet with the
teacher, I was unable to gather any information on the courses in the Child Development program. I attempted
to find the curriculum on my own, but the teacher did not upload their syllabi to the staff drive, so I was unable
to find the information I needed to include the courses on my chart. I will continue to reach out to the teacher
and hopefully will be able to add the information at a later date.
Creating the curriculum chart was helpful in many ways. By talking with teachers, I was able to make
connections, build relationships, and show teachers that I care about their curriculum and want to support it. A
simple conversation can go a long way. I am hoping that these short talks will help teachers be more open to
collaboration and will entice them to reach out to me for resources and co-teaching. This assignment has
allowed me to learn so much more about what students are doing in class. This will allow me to better support
them in the media center. When students come to the library to work on projects or assignments, I will be more
knowledgeable about their course work and better able to assist them.
This curriculum chart clearly meets the needs of the school and Element 1.1. I covered the main contents
and courses required for graduation. I included college preparatory courses because we are an AVID school. I
also included all the technology courses because we are STEM school. This chart will be utilized by me when I
order resources and books for my library. This year, my focus is weeding and developing my non-fiction
section. I will use this chart to help me decide what non-fiction books I need to purchase. I plan to upload this
chart to my LibGuide and share it with my lead teacher and administrative staff. It will also be a great tool to
use at School Improvement Team meetings. With permission from my principal, I can upload the document to
our school website and email it out to staff. Staff would be able to utilize the chart if they want to cross-
curricular plan. High school teachers do not have shared team planning times, so the chart would be helpful if
they want to make connections between their content and their colleagues content. By using this chart, I can
support the learning of all students and teachers at Williamsport High School.
