EARTHQUAKE RESISTANT DESIGN
(Structural Engineering)
Time : 3 Hours Max. Marks : 60
Note: Answer Any Five Questions. All Questions carry equal marks.

1. a) Explain Elastic rebound theory with schematic diagram. (6M)

b) What are the characteristics of seismic waves? (6M)

2. a) What are the ductility requirements of flexure members as per IS:13920?

(6M)
b) Explain Response Spectrum Method for obtaining the seismic lateral
loads for a multi storey building. (6M)

3. A simple one storey building has two shear walls in each direction as
shown. All four walls are in M-25 grade concrete,200 mm thick and 5m
long. The storey height is 4m.The floor consists of cast in-situ reinforced
concrete. Design shear force on the building is 200 k N in either direction.
Compute the design lateral forces on different shear walls. (12M)
