FINITE ELEMENT METHODS

1. Explain the basic steps involved in FEM. (12M)

2. i) Using minimum potential energy approach, derive the stiffness matrix


and consistent load matrix. (6M)

ii) Derive the stiffness matrix for bar element from basic stiffness equation.

3. After assembling, FEM model yields the following global system of equation:
Get the reduced system of equation after imposing the essential boundary
conditions, where d1 = -1; d2 = 0; d3 = 4. Solve the reduced system for
remaining nodal unknowns.
