Content Standard Addressed: ELAGSE2W3: Write narratives in which they recount a well-elaborated event or
short sequence of events, include details to describe
actions, thoughts, and feelings, use temporal words to signal event order, and provide a sense of closure.

Describe how you would incorporate an Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity in your
classroom: First, the classroom teacher will explicitly teach how to write a narrative (emphasize that they
need to use temporal words). Then, the students will be instructed to write a 4 paragraph narrative about
something they did over summer vacation. Each paragraph should have three sentences (topic, detail one,
and detail two). The classroom teacher will provide plenty of time in class for this activity (maybe two class
periods). Then, once the teacher has looked over all the stories and checked them off, she/he will show them
how to publish their stories online at www.kidpub.com.

Before the students publish their work, their parents will be notified of the project and asked if they permit
their child's work to be online. Parents will also be encouraged to teach their child about internet safety and
how to keep their information private on KidPub . This will also be taught to the students in class. Emphasize
the importance of never using last names or identifying pictures. Also ensure that students comment on other
student's work appropriately. Make sure you know who is commenting, but that the public does not know,
that way you can mediate all comments. Students will be assessed on their original paper, and if they are able
to participate in the online publishing opportunity, then they can also receive feedback on their story from
other students and teachers.

What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a classroom?
-A word processor
-computer/mobile device

Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of them may not be
addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high LoTi Level).
a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom and often beyond their
school: This will be addressed through the use of publishing their story and commenting on others.

b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (creating original data and or producing original
products as a result of engaging in a project): The story they create will be of their own experience.

c. Higher-order thinking: Since they will have the ability to comment and nicely critique others work,
then they will be engaged in creating new ideas and using higher-order thinking throughout the use of
this tool.

d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about their product: Other
teachers and students on KidPub can find their work and maybe even use it as an example in their
classroom!

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Having students create a story of their own experience can help engage
everyone because it is something unique to them. Also, students with physical/speech disabilities may find it
easier to collaborate with others through the use of commenting because this way they can type what they
would like to say.

Lesson idea implementation and Internet Safety Policies: To comply with Internet Safety Policies make
sure you do not allow anonymous commenting, do not post the name of the school or where you are located,
and emphasize that you won't be using student's names or photos. Also make sure that the website you are
using (KidPub) is allowed in your district's policies by asking administration.

Reflective Practice:
I fee like this lesson will impact student learning by allow them to feel in control of their own education. This
could be used as an introductory activity into learning how to write narratives. The teacher could first let the
students write their own narratives before going over how to actually write a narrative (using the standards).
Then, when they publish them online their peers and other teachers could help them reconstruct their stories
,and that way they could learn through experience.
