Understand Communications 1.0

Understand workshops
Both process modeling & metrics gathering take
place in the workshop
Workshops:
* should be no more than 3 or 4 per week of 3
hours duration each
* depending upon the complexity of a process,
will complete between 1 & 3 in a 3 hour
workshop
* for the purpose of estimating here, we have
E-6 E-3 assumed 18 process, equally split between
M-6 M-2 14.0 35.0 easy (1 hour), medium (2 hours) and complex
Complete metrics analysis C-6 C-1 (3 hours)
* always have 1 or 2 workshops planned for
contingency purposes
* Effort calculation is: number of workshops
divided by the number per week, say 3 here,
times 5 days in a week times the two process
consultants involved in the workshops
* the time in between workshops is spent in
tidying up process models, completing root-
cause analysis, etc

External stakeholder focus groups 2.0

This is a function of the same things as in the

Understand workshops, however, it will take
even longer, depending upon the number of
scenarios selected by management.We have
assumed here 2 sceanarios, so the Understand
phase is effectively multiplied by 2 (although
Initial Innvovate workshops E-6 E-3 probably 1.5 would be sufficient unless the
M-6 M-2 21.0 52.5 scenarios are completely different)
C-6 C-1 Again we have assumed that the future process
metrics will be determined during the
workshops
This is probably overstated, but do not under-
estimate the effort

Assumptions:
1. Estimates are for a business unit within an organization of, say, 120 employees who process about 25
different processes.
2. Business subject matter experts are available when required by ther project team.
3. Project Team comprises a project lead and process analyst who are experts at BPM (business process
improvement).
4. Have only estimated up to the People phase as from this point onwards it becomes too difficult to
generalise. Influencers will include: the level of IT involvement; how quickly the business wishes to implement
the new processes; etc

5. Have assumed that there will only be two scenarios in the Innovate phase, apart from the Quick Win
identification.
6. Costs will be determined as a result of calculation of effort
