Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Engagement: By giving the kids a chance to create their own movie instead of lecturing them I hope it
encourages them to be more involved.
Representation: This lesson is more hands on than many other lessons so it has different representations.
There is video, sound, images, talking, and watching other projects from other students.
Action and Expression: The kids are creating their own product so they have a wider range of choices to be
creative and get to use their own voice to share what they have learned.

Lesson idea implementation
For this lesson idea, I will introduce volcanoes with the iMovie I created using images from Google and videos
from Discovery Education. The video discusses magma and eruptions. After we have been introduced to
volcanoes I am going to send the kids on their own (most likely in small groups or pairs) to find all the
information they can about volcanoes. I want them to create their own video. I will help them and show them
the basics of using iMovie. I also want them to take notes about what they are learning as they do research.

This may take more than one day, I will probably have a time slot everyday for about a week for them to work
on the project. On Friday, we can have a movie time while we have snack and watch what everyone created.
Of course, I will review the videos a few times during the week and give them feedback on what to fix and
add. This is a great opportunity for the students to be their own teachers and for me to just guide them
through the process.

Importance of technology:
This standard could be taught without the creating aspect but I believe students learn better with hands on
experience. By giving them an example and letting them create their own product they will absorb more
information than if I was just telling them what to learn. For this project they are using iMovie, Google Image
Search, and the Internet to research information about Volcanoes.

Inspiration (optional): I found my video clips from Discovery Education and Dr. Booker shared with us her
example of an iMovie about Plants.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy:
The school’s computers should have blocks on any inappropriate sites or videos that the students can’t use. I
should have a list of places the students can get their videos from (I used Discovery Education) to help prevent
to wide of a search and to avoid anything copyrighted that they cannot use. I will show the students how to
create credits at the end to give credit to any images and videos they may use. I will also include this project
in the newsletter or blog for the week so the parents know what we are up to that week. Once the project is
completed I can upload their videos on a safe platform or YouTube (as long as no personal information other
first names is shared) so their parents can see if they can share with proud family members.

Reflective Practice:
I believe this lesson is a great way to introduce Volcanoes and let students begin learning by doing the
research on their own. This could be a good lead up to the project most schools do where you get to create
your own volcano at home and present to the class. One other piece of technology that could be introduced is
a green screen. The students could pretend to be News Anchors sharing about an explosion.
