Rhetorical Analysis
How would you feel when you didn't get justice just because of your body color?
Ta - Nehisi Coates makes the argument that African Americans should not be treated like
animals or be dehumanized in the book Between The World And Me. The author writes in an
informal tone for his 14 years old son but specifically for the American society. Coates support
his argument by using the rhetorical choices such as pathos, logos and metaphor to defend
argument about racisms. The author’s purpose is to inform the African American about the
racism so that people can get their rights, get the justice in the society.
Ta- Nehisi Coates develop a rhetorical appeal logically to make his argument about the racism
“But race is the child of racism, not the father.” (Paragraph#5 line). The meaning of this quote
is white people always mistreating the black Americans. Coates wants to say that race is not
entirely connected to the genes and the physical features, and white people established that long
ago. This is the logic of the white people. They just judge the people by their color and the race,
and they have their own opinion. Coates wants to change the opinion of the white people. “
America believes itself exceptional, the greatest and noblest nation ever to exist, a lone champion

and other enemies of civilization.” (Para # 7 line 5). In this quote the metaphor is comparing
“America as champion”. America thinks itself as the above of everyone. America has more
power and opportunities than the other. America want to see itself on the top but the reality is
very different.
The other part of metaphor is “ racism is visceral experience, that is dislodges brains, blocks
airways, rips muscle, extracts organs, crack bones, breaks teeth”. In this quote the metaphor is “
racism as a beating”. The effect of the racism on the african americans is not just hurt the internal
also hurt physically. It also affect african american people as not treated the same as they should
treated at the time. There were no one on their side even though the police too which makes the
black people to live under fear. Racism is to bad its effect the people life. It convinced some

the assault on your body.” This quote is specifically about the African americans, that they don't
have right. The law is against to the african people just because of the skin color, just because of
race. A black men who was beaten by the 4 white cops just because his skin color, and the cops
were found not guilty. It's not a justice, that's not American as the champion where people don't
