CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION

Flood is one of the most common global problem and viewed as the leading destructive

natural hazard among all naturally triggered disaster, causing extensive damage to built and

natural environment. (Natural Hazards: Explanation and Integration, 2017)

Flood is already part of our daily lives which Filipino people have adapted for centuries,

thus flood is expected through myriad part of the world. According to the European Union (EU)

Directive, flood is defined as a covering by water of land not normally covered by water. In

sense of “flowing water”, the word may also have applied to the inflow of tide. Flooding may

occur as an overflow of water from water bodies, such as river, lake or oceans in which the water

overtops or break levees, resulting in some of the water escaping its boundaries or it may occur

due to an accumulation of rainwater on saturated ground in flooded area.

The regularity of natural disaster has been increasing through the years, resulting in

damage to property and destruction of environment (Nelson, 2018). Floods greatly affect our

Assets through the destruction of crops, machinery and infrastructure. It can also greatly affect

someone’s health but in other cases it also has a great impact in others individual household. In

low lying areas where flooding is unending problem. The people resides here suffer from

frequent flood due to rainstorms, high tides and back flooding and in lowland area where

flooding is more often. it can cause a worth of damage to equipment, furniture and appliances as

well.

1
In low-lying area like Hagonoy Bulacan where flood is common problem, damage to

private properties is inevitable. According to MDRRMO Hagonoy, 14 out of 26 barangays are

prone to flood due to tidal-shifting with an average water level of 2 feet and 17 out of 26

barangays are affected due to upstream flooding. This flooding accounts for a lot of damage not

only in agriculture and infrastructure but also damage to private properties that cause a lot of

stress to the people who resides in hagonoy Bulacan.

According to the study of the Philippine institute for development studies about flood

event in Marikina city in early august 2012 shows that the city is divided into 16 barangays and

all barangays experience a different degree of flooding. The average flood height reported for the

August 2012 flood event was 4 meters outdoors and 3 meters indoors. The intensified monsoon

and resulting flood caused damage to property, including the dwelling structure itself and its

contents – appliances, electronic devices, and personal belongings. Most houses only needed

thorough cleaning, but others had damaged floors (22 percent), roofs (33 percent), and walls (29

percent). The most commonly damaged household appliances were television sets (48 percent),

rice cookers (47 percent), refrigerators (44 percent), washing machines (43 percent), and radios

(33 percent). The average amount of losses reported by households was PHP 33,142, which was

13.8 percent of their average annual household income.

Six months after the flood event, more than half of households had repaired/replaced the

damage. Among household assets, damage to vehicles and computers were the costliest.

However, 76 percent of households whose cars were damaged, 71 percent of those whose

motorcycles were damaged, and 42 percent of those whose computers were damaged had already

replaced/repaired them within six months of the disaster. The high values may reflect the fact

2
that households that owned vehicles and computers tended to have high incomes, which enabled

them to repair/replace these high-priced assets relatively quickly.

A lot of technologies exist that have a potential to overcome this kind of problem where it

can help people in terms of lifting and transporting jobs. However, it is mainly focus on lifting or

transporting only and made of hydraulic lifting tubes. Despite utilizing the said technologies for

developing, these technologies still not sufficient for flood related issues. The Mounted lifts and

The Hydraulic lifting system , both design to help people to efficiently and effectively perform

lifting actions but not accessible in water. These technologies emerge to aid this disadvantage

however, they’re not use to solve this kind of problem and focus on load elevating and load

appliances purposes only.

To overcome the issue at hand, the researchers propose a device that will aid people in

terms of lifting and transporting their appliances when in times of flood and high tide situation.

The researchers propose a device that will automatically lift the appliances through a lifter with

water sensor that will trigger once the designated water level is met. Instead of relying by 220v

AC power the system will be independent through a rechargeable heavy-duty battery, the system

is control through Arduino Uno and enclosed to water resistance casing that will protect the

device from malfunctioning. The researchers also propose the device to have heavy duty wheels

that can withstand a certain weight of load for transport and evacuating.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The general problem of this study is to develop an Automatic Appliance Lifter during

high tide and flood situations in Hagonoy, Bulacan that will monitor and will automatically lift

3
the appliances when tide water is rising and converts into a transport device when flooding is

getting seriously higher within the residence living in Hagonoy, Bulacan.

Specifically, this study will seek answer to the following questions:

1. What factors should be considered when monitoring the rising tide of the sea to

safeguard home appliances?

2. How can the proposed Automatic Appliance Lifter detect each rising level of the

incoming seawater inside the residence?

3. How can the proposed system adjust the height of the lifter depending on the level of

the rising seawater?

4. What are the hardware and software components needed to develop the proposed

system?

5 How can the residents be notified of the different alert levels with regards to the height

of the rising seawater?

6 What are the indicators that the proposed system has met the level of acceptability in

terms of the following criteria:

a. Functionality

b. Reliability

c. Usability

d. Efficiency

e. Portability

4

CHAPTER II

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

2.1 RELEVANT THEORIES

2.1.1 Embedded System

An embedded system is a programmed controlling and operating system with a dedicated

function within a larger mechanical or electrical system, often with real-time

computing constraints. (Barr, 2007) It is embedded as part of a complete device often including

hardware and mechanical parts. Embedded systems control many devices in common use today.

(Barr & Massa, programming Embedded system:with C ang GNU development tools, 2006)

Modern embedded systems are often based on microcontrollers (i.e. CPUs with integrated

memory or peripheral interfaces), (Giovino) but ordinary microprocessors (using external chips

for memory and peripheral interface circuits) are also common, especially in more complex

systems. In either case, the processor(s) used may be types ranging from general purpose to those

specialized in certain class of computations, or even custom designed for the application at hand.

A common standard class of dedicated processors is the digital signal processor (DSP).

Embedded systems are designed to do some specific task, rather than be a general-purpose

computer for multiple tasks. Some also have real-time performance constraints that must be met,

for reasons such as safety and usability; others may have low or no performance requirements,

allowing the system hardware to be simplified to reduce costs.

Embedded systems are not always standalone devices. Many embedded systems consist of small

parts within a larger device that serves a more general purpose. For example, the Gibson Robot

7
Guitar features an embedded system for tuning the strings, but the overall purpose of the Robot

Guitar is, of course, to play music. (carey, 2008) Similarly, an embedded system in

an automobile provides a specific function as a subsystem of the car itself.

In relevance to our study, our study uses automatic lifter if the system detects maximum

level of water and transportation if there are worst cases which the appliances are needed to

transport to other places.

2.1.2 Level Sensor

Level sensors detect the level of liquids and other fluids and fluidized solids,

including slurries, granular materials, and powders that exhibit an upper free surface. Substances

that flow become essentially horizontal in their containers (or other physical boundaries) because

of gravity whereas most bulk solids pile at an angle of repose to a peak. The substance to be

measured can be inside a container or can be in its natural form (e.g., a river or a lake). The level

measurement can be either continuous or point values. Continuous level sensors measure level

within a specified range and determine the exact amount of substance in a certain place, while

point-level sensors only indicate whether the substance is above or below the sensing point.

Generally, the latter detect levels that are excessively high or low. (EngineersGarage, 2012)

In relevance to our proposed study, we use water level sensor to detect if the water

(flood) reaches its maximum level for it to activate its lifting capability and transportation in

worst case scenarios

2.2 RELATED LITERATURE

Flood

Calamitous events such as disasters cause major disturbances to the community. It

disrupts the community in functioning and causes losses in terms of human, material and

environment. One of the disasters that people usually experience is a flood. According to

Madaan (2018), floods are natural occurrences where in an area that is usually dry suddenly

becomes submerged in water. It can be simply defined as an overflow of large bodies of water

into a dry land. This is often devastating and causes large scale destruction and significant loss of

life.

Causes of Flood

Amadeo (2018) indicated that flood’s damage is extensive and considered to be the

second-most widespread natural disaster after wildfires. She further elaborated some causes of

flood such as global warming, climate change and rising sea levels. Global warming are causing

more floods. As the temperature rises, the air above holds more moisture the reason why rainfall

become less frequent that soon create droughts. Skies will soon release moisture in an extreme

downpour that creates flood. Climate change also causes flood. Higher temperature means less

snow and more rain. One sixth of the world’s population relies on snowmelt for their water

supply. People expect slowly melting snow but they will receive buckets that they are not ready

to store which soon causes flood. Rising sea levels are also making floods worse. The ocean

usually floods the street during high tides. In line with this, Carrington (2017) stated that, the

small but inevitable rises in sea level will double the frequency of severe coastal flooding in most

9
of the world. Climate change is causing sea levels to rise at about 4mm per year, as the ice caps

melt the ocean becomes warm and expand that will continue for many years. The rising of sea

levels will give a higher starting point for the storm surges and big waves that can overwhelm

coastal defenses.

Flood and Its Effects

Flood affects individual and communities and have social, economic and environmental

consequences (Queensland Government, 2018). Most of the people are aware of the immediate

impacts of flooding that includes loss of human life, damage to property, loss of livestock and

deterioration of health conditions because of waterborne diseases. During flood, some economic

activities are limited the reason why normal life is disrupted. People are left with no choice but to

leave their homes to go to a safer place. Damage to infrastructure is one of the major

disturbances during a flood. This causes disruptions to supplies of clean water, electricity,

transportation, communication, education and health care. Loss of livelihoods can leave the

communities economically vulnerable. Floods can also traumatize victims for a long period of

time. Losing love ones has deep impacts especially on children.

According to Floodsite (2008), there are four groups of consequences of flood. Direct,

indirect, tangible and intangible consequences are those. Direct consequences happen at the time

of the flood such as damage to houses, schools, factories, roads, bridges, furniture, cars,

machinery, power plants and water supply while indirect consequences are those that occur after

the floodwater has gone such as loss of industrial production, traffic disruption, loss of customers

and increased vulnerability of survivors.. On the other hand, tangible consequences can be

directly calculated by their economic value. Intangible consequences are damages that do not

10
have monetary value such as health effects, loss of ecological value and loss of life. There are

also called material and immaterial damage. Damage to property of one’s own is considered as

material damage. After the flood, people often tend to experience emotional problems. Losing

sense of security and having difficulty in sleeping whenever it rains or storms are some of the

emotional problems that the victims are going through. These emotional problems are considered

as immaterial damage.

Climate change and urban growth have contributed to environment in which flooding has

become frequent and damaging occurrence. Sustainable, water-sensitive and low-impact

development initiatives around the world highlight the need for effective flood mitigation, and

forward-thinking engineers are combining natural and proprietary water management products to

deliver the best possible protection.

Global System for Mobile Communication

GSM (Global System for Mobile communication) is a digital mobile network that is

widely used by mobile phone users in Europe and other parts of the world. The mobile device

connects to the network via hardware. The subscriber identity module (SIM) card provides the

network with identifying information about the mobile user.

The GSM network has four separate parts that work together to function as a whole: the

mobile device itself, the base station subsystem (BSS) which handles the traffic between the cell

phone and the portion that tracks the location of callers to enable the delivery of cellular services,

the network switching subsystem (NSS) and the operation and support subsystem (OSS).

During flood event, the system will notify the house owner via his mobile phone that

there is current flood situation.

11
Lifter

A lifter is a cylindrical component that rides on the Cam Shaft to actuate the Intake and Exhaust

Valves. For pushrod engines, the Lifter pushes the pushrod up into the Rocker Arm and opens

the valve.

Hydraulic Lifters

Hydraulic lifters are used most often since they can reduce valve train noise by

maintaining zero valve clearance (no spacing between valve train components.) The oil filled

lifters adjust automatically for changes brought on by temperature variations and wear of parts.

Engine motor oil fills the inside of the lifter, pushing the lifter plunger up until all the play in the

valve train is removed.

Mechanical Lifters

Mechanical lifters, also called as solid lifters, simply transfer cam lobe action to the push

rod. They do not contain oil and are not self-adjusting. As a result, they require periodic

adjusting. Valve trains using mechanical lifters are prone to a clicking or clattering noise as the

valves open and close. This is why hydraulic lifters are more common.

Roller Lifters

Roller lifters are either mechanical or hydraulic. Designed into the lifter is a roller that

rides the cam lobe, reducing friction between the camshaft and lifter. Friction between these two

components is one of the highest friction points in an engine.

12
Electric Motors

Electric motors are now more diverse and adaptable than ever before. When planning a

motion control system, the choice of motor is extremely important. The motor must align with

the purpose and overall performance goals of the system. Luckily, there is a motor design

suitable for any imaginable purpose.

Types of Electric Motors

AC Brushless Motors

AC brushless motors are some of the most popular in motion control. They use induction

of a rotating magnetic field, generated in the stator, to turn both the stator and rotor at a

synchronous rate. They rely on permanent electromagnets to operate.

DC Brushed Motors

In a DC brushed motor, brush orientation on the stator determines current flow. In some

models, the brush’s orientation relative to the rotor bar segments is decisive instead. The

commutator is especially important in any DC brushed motor design.

DC Brushless Motors

DC brushless motors were first developed to achieve higher performance in a smaller

space than DC brushed motors, and they are smaller than comparable AC models. An embedded

controller is used to facilitate operation in the absence of a slip ring or commutator.

13
Direct Drive

Direct drive is a high-efficiency, low-wear technology implementation that replaces

conventional servo motors and their accompanying transmissions. In addition to being far easier

to maintain over a longer period of time, these motors accelerate more quickly.

Linear Motors

These electric motors feature an unrolled stator and motor, producing linear force along

the device’s length. In contrast to cylindrical models, they have a flat active section featuring two

ends. They are typically faster and more accurate than rotatory motors.

Scissor Lifter

As the drive elevators divided into: electro-hydraulic, electromechanical, pneumatic

hydraulic. As the lifting devices elevators divided into: chain, screw, telescopic, lever. As the

picking-up devices elevators divided into: platform, frame, and console. Stationary elevators are

established in a defined place, frequently without the special foundation on a flat surface of a

floor and fastened by means of anchor bolts or special pins. If the elevator is telescopic then for

his installation is required the special basement is required(Stroytech-ms.ru 2016). Elevators at

which racks move belong to mobile. The main advantage of mobile elevators is their mobility - a

possibility to use serially on various posts and in various technological zones of the

enterprise(Stroytech-ms.ru 2016).

Advantage and application

14
The concept of a scissors lift with hydraulic power comes from Pascal’s law applied in

car jacks and hydraulic rams which states that “pressure exerted anywhere in a conformed

incompressible fluid is transmitted equally in all directions throughout the fluid such that the

pressure ratio remains the same”(Hydraulicsonline 2013). 8 Since the emergence in the light of

different cultural achievements, the individual tries to maximize their use to facilitate the work.

Only a century ago, the society did not have the opportunity even to dream about what is already

openly available at present. The rough labor is replaced by technology, for example lifting

mechanisms. “A scissor lift elevator is a vertical transportation cab which is raised and lowered

from underneath, somewhat like a traditional hydraulic elevator, except that instead of a

hydraulic cylinder the extendable mechanism is a folding lattice of crisscrossed beams similar to

a pantograph. The entire mechanism extends upward when pressure is applied to the lowest

members

Motorized Lift Table

A motorized lift table is a device functions to lower and raise goods or/and person

whichusually are used to raise heavy and large distance relatively for small distance. Typically,

a motorizedlifttable operated by using scissor mechanism which is can contract and retract. Lift

table isergonomics to the user when they can adjust it to the desired height when operated. (Lift

table,n.d.).The application for lift table can be found mainly in automotive industry, patient bed,

heavyindustry and many more.

15
Starting 1950s, hydraulic scissor lifting tables became the most used design by

themanufacturer of automotive industries. By starting with simple design, the lift table has

undergoinvention from time to time until now.

Figure 1 Motorized Lift Table

Real Time Flood Monitoring System

Flood becomes one of the major problems in most of the countries around the world.

Although, we are able to forecast rainfall or to track storm path very precisely from the satellite

images, the need to have real-time monitored data such as flow, precipitation level, or water level

is essential in order to make a reasonable decision on the actions necessary to be performed to

prevent flooding.

Flood monitoring system has been use not only to monitor the flood parameter current

situation but also to alert the flood warning impact and to predict the flood. In this project a

model of flood monitoring system has been construct to represent the understanding of the basic

concept of sub-systems that involve in real-time monitoring system. The monitoring system

divides into three basic sub system, taking real-time data system, forecasting and processing the

16
data system and warning system. This project use visual basic as the interface of the data forecast

and data process. In order to put up the model, the author familiarized with the flood disaster

itself, study the development of previous system and study the current flood monitoring system.

2.3 RELATED STUDIES

Local

2.3.1 FLOOD DETECTOR SYSTEM USING ARDUINO

The study was conducted in 2016. According to De Guzman, Cuadra, De Luna and

Villanueva the flood is an inescapable natural disaster in Metro Manila, Philippines, causing

heavy flow of traffic and can also cause severe damage to properties and lives. For this reason,

researchers created a flood detection system to monitor up surging water in residential areas.

Using ultrasonic sensor, researchers created flood level sensing device which is attached to

Arduino Yun to process the sensor’s analog signal into a usable digital value of distance. The

user can get real-time information on monitoring flooded roads over the live stream plus SMS

based service. Flood height is determined by subtracting the sensor’s height with respect to the

floor minus the sensed distance between the sensor and the flood water. Updates on the height of

the water level will be texted to the rescue team (Local Government Unit) and to the residents of

Barangay Marulas, Valenzuela City, Philippines and can the locals can also view level of the

flood in the interface of the system. The level of the flood will be divided into four. The flood

sensor and microcontroller will be powered by a solar power bank with 80,000 Ampere-Hour

(mAh) for the benefit of continuous operation of water flood height detection and network data

17
transmission. The Arduino Flood Detector System is developed to be one of the fastest methods

to monitor flood that will help motorists or road user to avoid problem when flood occurred.

(Edwin De Guzman, 2016)

Based on the Researches, the Arduino Flood Detector System is a flood sensing device that

monitors the water level. In our case we will use a flood sensing device that will monitor the

water level and will send notifications through GSM and at the same time the device will be

activated automatically.

2.3.2 Multi-Functional 4 Wheels Movable Base Stands with Size Adjustable

In year 2012, the study conducted in Manila, Philippines. As what Arcie Manguerra and

Rose Cruz, the multi-functional movable adjustable base is a high-performance product. It is

adjustable, easy to assemble and safe to use, convenient applicable for dryers, washing machines,

refrigerators or other heavy home appliances. The corner pads prevent anything from slipping

out of position. With the button-type lock on each wheel, it can be easily located and stabilized.

The rubber swivel casters make moving heavy objects really easy and spared wooden floor. It

can also hold a big amount of weight capacity and adjustable length to fit any other appliances. It

is convenient to use and can help to transport heavy appliances. (Arcie Manguerra, 2012)

The researchers applied the principles of movable base stands that have button-type lock on each

wheel that is good for moving and stabilizing appliances. It is also a water and rust proof

materials to prevent damages and malfunctioning of the device.

18
Foreign

2.3.3 Two-wheeled cart with auxiliary wheel

The study two-wheeled cart with auxiliary wheel was conducted by Eugene A.

Kazmark in year 2014. He stated that, a two-wheeled cart for transporting articles such

as luggage and the like is equipped with an auxiliary wheel which is movable between a

storage position and a use position in which the cart is self-supporting. The cart

includes a base portion and a handle portion, and the base portion includes a pair of

parallel tubes and an axle which extends between the tubes and supports a pair of

wheels. The auxiliary wheel is mounted on an auxiliary wheel frame which is movable

mounted on the base portion for movement between a storage position in which the

wheel frame extends generally parallel to the parallel tubes and a use position in which

the auxiliary wheel supports the handle portion at an acute angle with respect to the

supporting surface. (Kazmark, 2014)

For the proposed device, it also has a heavy wheel in order to transport easily and move freely in

different places to reduce the burden in moving the heavy things.

2.3.4 Flood Detection using Sensor Network and Notification via SMS and Public Network

In year 2011 the study Flood detection using sensor network and notification via SMS

and public network was conducted in Malaysia by Mohammed Khalaf and he said that this study

is all about an alert generating system for flood detection. This focused on the development of

the system which will determine the current water level by means of sensors and by using

wireless sensor network will then provide notification via GSM modem. The system, however,

do not just stops there but also to proceed to send notification through popular social media

network like the Facebook and Twitters. It is felt that notification system such as flood warning

system should be carried a step further in notifying the public. Since social networking is at the

moment one of the popular medium of communication, sending an alert through it would hence

reach a larger audience. The architecture of the system can be expanded further to a fully

functioning system in alerting the public of an impending disaster caused by flood. (Khalaf,

2011)

The researchers of this study focused on sending notification and alertness to people to

warn them that the water level is rising through text messages with the help of GSM modem.

This will notify the public even that are affected of flood even if they are outside of the area.

However, this is limited only to text messages.

2.3.5 Scissors lift platform with electronic control

In year 2011, the study about Scissors lift platform with electronic control was conducted

in Mexico by Arturo Ochoa and Jaime Antonio. According to him, a lift platform sustained

through a double system of support scissors in its lower part, which offers the mechanical

upward and downward motion in a vertical plane and on a base frame, which in its turn is

activated by an electric motor. The lift platform is characterized because it also includes a motor

unit which operates electronically to automatically control the desired position in its upward or

downward motion originated by the movement of the mobile arms of the scissors on a track in

the horizontal plane. (Arturo Ochoa, 2011)

20
The researchers of this study invention relate generally to a lift platform having an

electronic control system. Specifically, the lift platform is sustained through a double system of

support scissors in its lower part

2.3.6 AUTOMATIC MOTORIZED SCREW JACK TO REDUCED MAN POWER

In year 2016, the study conducted in India and introduces the motorized screw jack by

Kamalakkannan. He stated that the weight after certain limits cannot be lifted by a person, in

such cases we are in need of jack. When it is motorized, it becomes more convenient. In order to

implement this idea, he have to design and developed a system called motorized jack operating

through switch by having full control of the jack, so that they can easily lift it up and down by

using the on/off. This helps to reduce the burden of the worker. The main reason to fabricate the

motorized screw jack is to avoid the fatigue of the users during lifting the load. The project is

less cost and good efficient for operating. (Kamalakkannan.A, 2016 )

The researchers of this study analyzed how to relate the said system to their proposed device to

build a convenient (motorized) mechanism that people can rely on during flood calamities. The

device will completely remove the burden in manually lifting the appliances.

Figure 2. Input-Process-Model (IPO) Model

In IPO diagram, input is the activity of gathering and capturing raw data. In producing

the device Automatic Appliance Lifter, data and information in the municipality of Hagonoy

Bulacan must be obtained from the number of affected people to the damage to property caused

by flood and high tides situations in the area. It also includes how frequent and the normal water

level of high tide in the area, then we analyze the data gathered, review related concepts and

22
studies and in this data and information we conceptualize the system that can provide a

mechanism to meet an objective.

On the other side, processing involves converting or transforming data into useful outputs

or taking alternative actions and sorting data for future use, this involves analyzing and designing

the system that will be relative or presented actions and the solutions in the issue at hand.

Establishing the design of how the system operates and how the desired output is achieved.

Gathering the necessary components and creating software needed. As the device is assembled it

will undergo continuous validation and troubleshooting until the system is prior to final

evaluation.

Once both the INPUT and PROCESS has been finished, the OUTPUT block is attained

and will be called Automatic Appliance Lifter for high tides and flood situation in Hagonoy

Bulacan

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

3.1 Methods and Techniques of the Study

To meet the objective of the proposed system, the study uses two types of research,

Descriptive - Quantitative research and Applied research. Descriptive research includes surveys

and fact-finding inquiries of different kind, it involves gathering and analyzing of numerical data

using statistical, mathematical or computational techniques. The other method, applied research

aims at finding a solution for an immediate problem facing a society that can be applied to

resolve the issues. Gathering feedbacks about the system’s performance from the residents of the

municipality of Hagonoy is essential to the study; hence, a Descriptive-Quantitative research is

applicable. Likewise, an Applied Research is applicable as the study involves the development

of a technology or device that will aid people do load lifting jobs during flooding situations.

To evaluate the system’s performance, a descriptive-quantitative research is conducted. A

survey utilizing the Likert Scale in which descriptive data is converted to quantitative data, is

carried out by the researchers to selected group users, numerical data is gathered and are

analyzed to assess the system’s acceptability.

Applied Research methodology is carried out to solve the problem in destruction to

personal assets or properties during flooding in area of Hagonoy and its aftermath. A device or

mechanism paired with sensors and has lifting capabilities is developed, allowing affected people

to easily moved and secure their appliances to higher place.

26
3.2 Population and Sample

The study is intended for implementation in the town of Hagonoy, Bulacan. On that note,

the system to be developed will be under the evaluation of the town populace. The study entails a

large population which cannot all be studied. That portion of the population that is studied is

called a sample of the population, the researchers made use of proportional stratified probability

sampling technique where the population is broken down into homogenous subgroups or strata

according to sectors affected by:

 Residents affected by Tidal flooding - civilian residents of Hagonoy, Bulacan who are

largely affected by tidal flood following the damage to property particularly appliances

 Residents affected by Upstream flooding - civilian residents of Hagonoy, Bulacan who

are largely affected by upstream flood following the damage to property particularly

appliances

 Government officials – the response authorities who administer calamity risk reduction

(MDRRMO Municipality of Hagonoy)

Such approach will enable each sector to be properly represented and compared to one

another to test the acceptability of the system among a diverse set of users.

The Slovin’s formula is used to determine the appropriate sample size within the

population of 159,262 that consist of 79,005 affected residents by Tidal flooding, 80,195

Residents affected by Upstream flooding and 12 officials of MDRRMO municipality of

Hagonoy at 95% confidence (5% margin of error).

The Slovin’s formula is as follows:

𝑁
𝑛 = 1+𝑁𝑒 2 where n = sample size

27
N = population size

e = desired margin of error

Thus, the sample size is:

159,262
𝑛 = 1+(159,262)(0.05)2 = 398.9979 ≈ 399

The sample size for each stratum proportionate to its population size is determined by the

equation:
𝑁ℎ
𝑛ℎ = ∗𝑛 where n = total sample size
𝑁

N = total population size

nh = sample size for stratum h

Nh = population size for stratum h

Table 1 Respondents of the Study per Sector

Sector Population Percentage

Residents affected by Tidal flooding 15 50 %

Residents affected by Upstream flooding 10 33.33 %

MDRRMO municipality of Hagonoy 5 16.67 %

Total 30 100 %

Source: Municipal Government of Hagonoy

Table 1 summarizes the population and corresponding sample size per sector. Based on

the gathered information, the total population is 159,262 with a total sample size of 30

respondents.

28
To have a 95% confidence error in conducting the study, n-number of respondents need

to participate in the survey. But the actual number of participants in the study is only 30 due to

lack of time and resource.

3.3 Research Instrument

In order to analyze the system effectively, the researchers shall make use of evaluations

questionnaire and interviews that can measure the evaluator’s satisfaction with the system and its

output, both in quantitative and qualitative terms. The system shall be tested and assessed

firsthand by the intended users in the actual environment where it is to be implemented. This

approach shall establish the system’s reliability, functionality, and usability from the perspective

of the users in order to determine the overall acceptability of the system.

The construction of questioners is utilized through evaluation under different criteria that

are selected based on ISO/IEC 9126, a standard that provides a quality model for test

specifications. For Automatic Appliance Lifter, Functionality is the most important. It signifies

that the system can precisely performs an appropriate set of functions to effectively provide such

services needed. The reliability of the system is also evaluated, it further refers to the extent to

which independent administration of the same instrument yields the same results under

comparable conditions and if the system can actually provide the emergency services needed in

times of hightide and flooding in the area. Equally as significant is the usability criterion which

determines If the system is practical to users, suitable to the problem and easy to use. The

Efficiency of the system, this characteristic is concerned with resources used when providing the

required functionality, the amount of resources provides a good indication of the system. The

Portability criterion, this refers to how well the system can adopt to changes in its environment

29
or with its requirements. These factors sum up the important considerations that will indicate

whether or not the research objectives have been met.

Table 2 Scale used in the Evaluation of the System

Scale Ranges Description

The system completely meets the criterion

5-Excellent 4.51 – 5.0
indicated.

The system is acceptable but still needs minor

4 -Very Good 3.51 – 4.5
improvement.

The system is fairly acceptable and needs

3- Good 2.51 – 3.5
moderate improvement.

The system is lacking and needs major

2- Fair 1.51 – 2.5
improvement.

The system does not meet the indicated criterion

1 –Poor 1.0 – 1.5
at all.

In Table 3.3 we used Likert scale in which the evaluator’s may rate the degree of

satisfaction to a given statement of evaluation under different criteria, as shown, the scale ranges

from 1 to 5, strongly agree assigns 5 points. It indicates that the evaluator highly appreciates the

30
system because it successfully meets the corresponding criterion. Agree 4 points,3 is unsure and

2 indicate the system needs further improvement, with increasing level of acceptability. A rating

of 1 is the lowest, strongly disagree, indicating that the evaluator does not find the system

acceptable in terms of the corresponding criterion.

The researcher’s follow ISO 5807 for information processing, it Defines symbols

to be used in information processing documentation and gives guidance on conventions tor their

use in data flowcharts, program flowcharts, system flowcharts, program network charts, system

resources charts. The System Flowchart was used to shows the system’s application process and

one-way process. It represented the control of operations and the data flow of the system.

3.4 Data Gathering Procedure

3.4.1 Surveys

According to De Vos, a valid instrument measures the concept in question, and it

measures it accurately. In this study the researchers provide an evaluation questionnaire that will

assess the acceptability and preparedness of the system. To achieve the validity of the data the

researchers will personally distribute the questionnaire to the respondents and will conduct a

discussion that will give explanation of the project. The researchers will also provide brief

demonstration of the device operation; this is to give the respondents knowledge and familiarity

about the device for them to evaluate easily. Permission to conduct the study with the

respondents will be secured from Municipal Government of Hagonoy, Bulacan.

31
3.4.2 Data sheets

In ensuring Efficiency of the system, knowing the performance and other technical

characteristics of a product, machine, component (e.g., an electronic component), material, a

subsystem or software in sufficient detail will allow the researchers to understand the role of the

component in the overall system and help them to choose products or to help use the products.

3.4.3 Rating Scale

The evaluation of the system is a systematic assessment of its performance and

acceptability among intended users. Using Rating scale, the researchers can quantitatively

gauge the evaluators’ satisfaction with the system and its output.

3.4.5 Non-Directive Interviews

an interview in which questions are not prearranged. Unstructured or nondirective interviews

generally have no set format. The lack of structure allows the researchers to ask questions which

comes to their mind next as a follow up and interrogate points of interest as they go on further. In

Non-directive interviews, there is free talk on issues. They tend to be more open ended, informal,

free flowing and flexible. Questions are not pre-set, although there might be some topics that the

researchers wish to explore. This gives the interview some structure and direction.

3.5 Design Guidelines

3.5.1 Planning and System Requirements Analysis stage

Hagonoy is a low-lying area where flooding is an undying problem. Its inhabitants suffer

from the frequent flood due to rainstorms, high tides and back flooding. in low land flooding,

32
like Hagonoy, where flood is more often. It can cause a worth of damage to equipment, furniture

and appliances as well. The device itself provides help to the people in the area to easily lift their

appliances or furniture in times of flood and high tide. This device can detect or measure the

current water level and automatically ascent as it meets the designated water level. The system

has a LED and sound Alarm system to alert the users in times of flooding, it is also GSM based

where the systems notify or send an alert message to the users incase they’re not at home. The

system is powered by a heavy-duty battery so that the device can still be functional in times of

power outage. The system has its emergency heavy-duty wheels as a method of transporting

appliances in times of evacuation,

To establish a device that can automatically function and alert the users, the researchers

developed a system comprising of both hardware and software.

To ensure the successful utilization of the system by users, numerous testing is conducted

before the system’s implementation. Once the system is fully tested, implementation and

deployment of the system to localities having trouble in saving their appliances during and after

flooding and hightide in the area is executed. Also, a follow-up evaluation is conducted to

discern the system’s effectivity.

3.5.2 Design of Product Stage

The device is an automatic lifter with water level sensor act as trigger device to activate

the system when the designated water level is met, it has its LED and alarm system to alert the

users and GSM module to notify them the water level. The system is made of scissors lift

controlled through a motor that will help us to lift or lower unit loads. The device has an

33
emergency wheel in terms of transporting the load. The system was made possible through

Arduino Uno acting as the brain of the system powered by rechargeable heavy-duty battery

3.5.3 Development of Product Stage

The device is established through Arduino Uno Acting as the command center sending

signals to start the system. It makes use of the common Arduino IDE to upload codes without

any additional library and drivers. The system composes of water level sensor that alert the

system about water in that specific area. The device has its LED and sound alarm system

with GSM based module to alert and notify the users at the same time. The lifting device is

consisting of scissors lift, it’s a platform that is mounted on folding arms is used to provide

elevated work areas or to help raise or lower unit loads. The lift is Controlled by a motor

connected to Arduino Uno. The device also has an emergency heavy duty wheels for

transporting the appliances if needed. The constructed Device will be powered by

rechargeable heavy-duty Battery connected to a relay that automatically cuts 220 vAC when

charging when the required water level is met to activate the system. Also, its Serial

Peripheral Interface equips a high-speed interface and optimizes integration with the

embedded microcontrollers.

All of the specified modules will then be embedded in a circuit board that is enclosed in a

casing including its power source. Once the device has been permanently established, the

system should precisely perform an appropriate set of functions to effectively provide such

services needed.

34
3.5.4 Testing Stage

The system is tested in an area where water is present for three or more times in order to

assure that the products system serves its purpose where each test will be conducted in

different locations and water level. The researchers shall test the accuracy and reliability of

the system through simulating various applicable scenarios. These include low water and

high-water level testing to test functionality, continuous and sporadic usage to gauge the

battery stamina, and repeated trials to test the system’s reliability.

Ensuring that the system objectives are met. The researchers will be monitoring and

measuring progress regularly for a week to identify any variance from the system so that

correction action can be taken if necessary. The testing of device will have done 4 times in

different situations:

Designated water level is not met- the device has a water level sensor and should only

activated when a designated water level is met.

Designated water level is met- the device should be activated and alert the users through its

LED and alarm system. The device should able to lift the designated appliance to a certain

height where it is safe from the water.

Water level reach the maximum height the device can handle- the device should alert and

notify the users through its alarm system and via GSM. The device transporting wheels shall

withstand and handle the appliances weight for transporting.

Charging battery- if the device is charging and the system detect the designated water level,

it should automatically cut the 220v AC to the device.

35
After performing testing, the researchers should ensure that existing functionality works

fine, and the project will be successful.

3.6 Implementation Stage

3.6.1 Description of Implementation

The study employs a system which is Automatic Appliance lifter integrated with a

Water level sensor that seeks to alleviate the difficulty to lift and secure their appliances

during and after flooding disaster. The system will be implemented in the municipality of

Hagonoy, Bulacan. Using the pilot approach, wherein the system is tested first on a small

group and is evaluated by the users before a large-scale implementation. The system will

be first tested and evaluated in Brgy.San Pascual before extending the system to other

areas in Hagonoy,Bulacan.

3.6.2 Tasks for Implementation

The following are tasks required for the implementation of the system:

 Allocation of the device to the intended users

 Providing a brief overview of the system, both hardware and software to the

users

 Product Demonstration

 Providing technical assistance and necessary manuals on how to operate the

product

36
3.6.3 Performance Monitoring

In order to determine the systems reliability and success of the implementation the

researchers make an evaluation through the use of evaluation forms which are used to assess the

device.

3.6.4 Maintenance Stage

To determine if the system is still effectively utilized, operation of the system must be

monitored through monthly evaluation to check if the system is working efficiently to detect

deficiencies for further enhancement of the system to improve for future use.

To safeguard the system’s hardware and to ensure that the device is functioning at its

peak, the following guidelines should be followed:

Scissors lift- Inspect all welds under and around the lift for fatigue or failure Particularly,

inspect the structural welds

Battery- rechargeable battery should be charged according to appropriate charging time

needed when the power is drained. For the batteries health, avoid constant discharging of the

battery fully.

Device- Check general condition of the lift Operate the lift after service

3.7 Data Processing and Statistical Treatment

Data gathering will be done using the survey method wherein the system will be tested

and evaluated by 30 respondents from the Hagonoy, Bulacan populace. The assessment of the

37
respondents shall determine whether the objectives of the study are met. The responses of the

participants for each item in the questionnaire shall subsequently be tabulated and summarized.

To determine the magnitude of the responses:

% = (n / N) x 100

Where:

% – Percentage

n – number of responses

N – total number of respondents

The summarized results will be subjected to statistical treatment using measures of

central tendency, particularly the Weighted Mean formula. It will yield a single number (i.e. the

weighted mean) that will represent the entire group during the data interpretation process.

The weighted arithmetic means of a set of values X1, X2… Xn can be expressed as the

sum of the values multiplied by their corresponding weights. The formula is:

∑𝑛
𝑖=1 𝑓𝑖 𝑋𝑖
𝑋̅ = ∑𝑛
where 𝑋̅ = rate of weighted mean
𝑖=1 𝑓𝑖

Xi = rating per item

fi = weight or frequency of each item

∑ 𝑓𝑋
The simplified form of the formula is: 𝑋̅ = ∑𝑓

After the computation, the mean rating of each criterion will be generated and

subsequently interpreted using the following standards:

38
Table 3 Interpretation of the Computed Weighted Mean

Range Remarks Description

4.50 – 5.00 Excellent Highly Acceptable

3.50 – 4.49 Very Good Acceptable

2.50 – 3.49 Good Moderately Acceptable

1.50 – 2.49 Fair Unacceptable

1.00 – 1.49 Poor Highly Unacceptable

Table 3 shows the interpretation of the computed weighted mean. As indicated, the

highest rating ranges from 4.50 to 5.00 which means that the system is highly acceptable and

recommended for implementation, whereas the lowest rating which ranges from 1.00 to 1.49

which indicates that the system is highly unacceptable and cannot be used for implementation.

Mean ratings that range from 1.50 to 2.49, 2.50 to 3.49, and 3.50 to 4.49 respectively indicate

that the system is unacceptable, moderately acceptable, and acceptable.

Unit testing is to check the performance and functionality of each part of the system. First

we check the functionality of our sensor. The sensor is responsible for triggering our whole

system and Arduino for controlling it and sending signals to other components. When 1 st water

float sensor level is triggered, it should notify and alert its users about the detected water. The

2nd level should activate the lifter then notify and alert the users and the 3 rd level should notify

about critical water level. When the all the sensors are then off, the relay should change the

polarity of the battery then the lifter should retract and back to original position.

CHAPTER V

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION, AND RECOMMENDATION

Summary

Flood is one of the most common global problem and viewed as the leading destructive

natural hazard among all naturally triggered disaster, causing extensive damage to built and

natural environment.

This flooding accounts for a lot of damage not only in agriculture and infrastructure but

also damage to private properties that cause a lot of stress to the people who resides in hagonoy

Bulacan.

The Appliance lifter was design to give ease to the user especially in Hagonoy citizen

who are experiencing a lot of damage not only in agriculture and infrastructure but also damage

to private properties caused by flooding.

The develop lifter was evaluated by the use of Likert scale. The respondents rate the

functionality, reliability, usability, efficiency and portability of the device. And as a result of

evaluation, the data was tabulated and the mean for each criterion was computed and graph to

have a rating of acceptable.

52
Conclusion

Based on findings of the study,The water sensor is capable of detecting a desired water

level Arduino Mega is being used. The water sensor is being connected and programmed in

Arduino Mega to set the certain value of the water level that the researchers wanted to detect.

GSM modem requires a SIM card to be operated and operates over a network range subscribed

by the network operator. It can be connected to a computer through serial, USB or Bluetooth

connection. A linear actuator is a mechanical device that converts energy to create motion in a

straight line The alarm system was able to do its function to alert the people if the lifter reaches

the maximum height.

The following conclusions were drawn based on the result of testing for the Actuator it

can lift a maximum of 70kgs of appliances. On the notification system, it can send a notification

messages to the people using the Appliances Lifter when the water level arise and when the

water dropped off. The alarm system was able to do its function to alert the people from knowing

the water critical level

The result of the evaluation in which the prototype is acceptable by obtaining an overall

mean of 4.359 All of the respondents rated that the system’s functionality, usability, and

maintainability are acceptable, with reliability and efficiency having higher ratings. All of these

values results to a recommendable execution of the proposed system.

The overall effect of the Automatic Appliances Lifter to the respondents is it can lessen

the damage to the appliances on Hagonoy, Bulacan Unlike when they use to put their appliances

in high places that would be somehow be helpful But it will waste their time and energy. The

53
researchers conclude that, the Automatic Appliances Lifter can help the people living in

Hagonoy, Bulacan

Recommendation

After the interview and interpreting the result gathered from the study and from the

suggestion from the conducted evaluation of the future researcher who wants to develop similar

kind of study:

 They can use proximity sensor to detect the maximum height needed for the device to lift.

 They can add solar energy source to use the device even without power energy during

flooding.
