about waking up early and drinking coffee with my mom. I think about all my friends and their
hate of school. As similar my friends and I are, we have opposite feelings about school, but we
agree that school is the backbone of society. If people do not educate themselves and keep
learning for the rest of their lives then society will fall behind and become obsolete.
School is also where I met most of, if not all of my best friends. If people have friends at
school then they are more likely to attend school rather than remain at home. Further more, class
is more enjoyable when the students are friends and get along because the learning environment
is more welcoming. As long as the students respect the teacher and their peers, then sitting
together is great for collaborative learning. Plus, if your friends are in the same classes as you,
and you are having difficulties understanding a math problem, then your friend can teach you
how to do the problem in a different way than the teacher and the concept will finally click.
My earliest classroom memory was when I was walking into kindergarten halfway
through the semester with a new haircut, and the Teacher’s Assistant would not let me into class
because she did not recognize me. The other memory from my first year in school was getting
dress coded at recess because I had a tank top on. I was both confused and embarrassed in these
situations because I was young and the oldest sibling. I attended the following schools: Field
Elementary, Self Development Academy, Highland High School, and currently I am attending
Kindergarten through the fourth grade was fairly easy for me, but I did not enjoy school
for most of it. In fifth grade, I had a horrible teacher and that was the year I hated math was. One
time my teacher opened up the math book and looked at the chapter and said, “screw fractions,
you’re never gonna need them.” Then she closed the book and moved on to something else. For
awhile a had a C in that class which was the lowest grade I had ever received. Naturally, I was
grounded until my grades were acceptable. My parents always always held me to a high standard
when it came to my education. Because of that, I have worked hard in my classes and feel
disappointed when I receive low scores. For the most part, I am a hard worker when it comes to
After my difficult time in fifth grade, my parents removed me from that school and my
old friends placing me into a charter school where they taught a grade ahead in math. My first
month in that school was not my favorite. I would often find myself crying every night when
attempting to complete my homework. At that school I had an amazing math teacher that was
well educated not only in math, but in teaching. She made math easy to understand and helped
I did feel anxiety quite often when I was at school because I was self conscious and afraid
that I would somehow mess up. The anxiety is the strongest at the beginning of the school year
and everytime I switch schools. However, I knew that I would get past the first few days, and
feel more comfortable in my new environment. I do not recall the smells or sounds of school
though.
When I think of teaching I think of most of my English teachers. I love English, but I
think my appreciation for that class stems from the incredible teachers I had. Every year I loved
my English teacher even though all of them had different personalities and senses of humor. The
characteristic they did have in common was their command of the classroom and their
relationship with the students. My teachers knew how to balance joking with the class/ having
fun and making sure everyone learns and completes the assignments.
For my future teaching I want to make sure that my students respect me and that
everyone can feel safe and comfortable. I was uncomfortable the first few days of school and I
do not want my students to feel that way. If I can make sure that my students are comfortable and
learn at the very least. I hope to have the perfect balance just like my English teachers had.
