The Circulatory System Materials

This packet contains a number of activities to accompany lessons on

the circulatory system, its parts and functions.

Each labeled diagram is followed by a blank diagram. I suggest you

print the entire packet on cardstock (I use #110 weight) then
laminate all of them. This will keep the condition from year to
year. It will also make it possible to use overhead markers in your
instruction or to have the students practice writing (i.e. tracing
words or paths) on the diagrams themselves.

I have also included a page of labels. Cut them out and cut Velcro
tape to attach them to the blank diagrams. If you prefer, you can
use overhead markers to label the blank diagrams as well.

Blood Vessels

There are THREE types of blood vessels in the body.

Arteries - thick vessels that carry blood away from the heart.

Veins - thin vessels that carry blood to the heart.

Capillaries - tiny vessels that connect arteries and veins.

The Heart
The heart has FOUR chambers. The two upper chambers
are the right atrium and the left atrium. The two lower
chambers are the right ventricle and the left ventricle.
The aorta is the largest artery in the body, it carries blood
away from the heart to the body. The pulmonary artery
carries blood from the heart to the lungs. The pulmonary
vein carries blood from the lungs to the heart.

Path of Blood Through The Heart
We will start following the blood in the right atrium. From
there it goes into the right ventricle. The blood then goes
out of the heart through the pulmonary artery to the lungs.
Blood comes back to the heart through the pulmonary veins.
Next stop is the left atrium, followed by the left ventricle.
Finally the blood goes out the aorta to bring blood to the
rest of the body. Veins will bring it back to the right
atrium so the cycle can start again!

Blood Groups
There are FOUR blood groups. They are A, B, AB
and O. What blood group it is depends on what
antigens are on its surface.

Make this Red Blood Cell Directions

The following two pages are a blank red

blood cell and a page of labels and
antigens.

Cut out the labels and antigens (green

triangles for A antigens, blue circles for
B antigens)
Pick which type of blood cell you would
like your student to make and place the
label at the top of the page. Then have
the student place the correct antigens on
the blood cell using the Blood Group
diagram as a reference
