DIAGNOSTIC TEST ANALYSIS

Quantitative and qualitative analysis of the survey

All research involves the use of instruments for the collection and analysis of data. It is

about social research techniques: they are tools, instruments or ways of proceeding that

allow any research subject to obtain information (data) about the object of study that is

interesting to know at a certain time.

In other words, research techniques can be seen as a set of rules, operations or specific

procedures that guide the construction and management of data collection and analysis

instruments. In the same way, these instruments and techniques allow us to study a

situation in the classroom, and in turn, lead the research group to diagnose the needs or

difficulties that may arise in said classroom, searching with the results of effective and

direct solutions. above all, employing didactic and methodological strategies for the

solutions of certain problems.

The research group considered it necessary to know the teaching-learning process of the

seventh-grade students of the Institución Educativa Nobel Juan Manuel Santos in the

English’ Area. For this reason, the survey made to the students allowed to characterize the

learning of this second language in terms of communication skills.

Through the whole process of the research was important the use of some techniques and

tools in order to identify the problems hidden in this institution and revealed thanks to those

tools.

1. An interview about their English learning process, where students can answer some

questions in order to identify their main problem with English classes. It is an important

tool in the recognition of the problem.

2. A English test to identify the student’s skills difficulties to learn English, In order to be

more specific in the identification of weakness of the student and be according with the

established by the government was really important the use of the Second language

standards of English and the Common European framework. This English test is focused in

every skill of English languages and was created with the goal of identify what is the

principal weakness of these students who were taken as a sample in this research.

Data collection access to relevant information in the development of this research was

made possible through the design and implementation of surveys, whose items allowed to

know evaluative aspects students target group and their interests in the process learning

English. Such surveys were applied to the total group, as follows: 42 students; who they

were told they had to answer each item as honestly as possible. These surveys are described

below.

This diagnostic test was designed to determine the accuracy of the information provided by

students in the previous survey, with the actual situation of these towards learning English.

Significantly, this diagnostic test allowed determining the actual level of English in which

these students were by evaluating the skills, they are part of the categories of analysis of

this research.

The diagnostic test consisted of 4 items, which should be solved by the students on an

individual basis, with the guidance of one of the student teachers.

In the first item, the teacher gave instructions about the test and how to resolve it. The

second item, described in English students to a teacher, taking into account their physical

characteristics, then make orally.

In this activity, 70% of students failed to do so, while 30% dared not come forward to do so

orally, done that allows us to perceive the deficiency of speaking and writing skills of these

students. In this way, it is important to do activities in which students can develop these

skills taking into account the deficiencies about this result.

In developing the third item, students would read a text about pets, later to comment on

what the text is about.

Identified Recognized

members

Finally, in point 4, we applied a short story in English related to the family. The students

had to read 5 questions related to the information found in this story. The information

reflected in this item shows that 65% identified the family, 35% recognized the members of

the family.

Throughout the observation and test, the researchers noticed that the students did not have a

good reading level in English, even when they wanted to, because their comprehension was

so limited especially with very specific questions. Then, researchers need to work together

in order to accomplish the basis for them to learn English.

This fact can be inferred that students in whom this research focuses have some difficulty

developing an effective and revitalizing their production skills in English, these are namely,

writing and oral, with much more difficulty this last, because it has not worked in class this

ability in students.
