Pre-Course Reflection

Throughout high school and I never took english too serious because I did not see it as an

important subject like math or science. Now that I am a student at ASU I understand the

importance of my english courses and the role they play in my success as a future nurse. Last

semester my english class was very different to any other english class I ever took and really

made me think about how I could apply what I was learning to my future career. Looking back at

what I did it, I now know how succeeding in my english course will help me succeed in the

future.

I have always wanted to have a career in the medical field, something people fail to

realize is that one of the most important thing amongst doctors and nurses is communication

because that is how information on patients is given. This communication is done through either

writing or speaking, knowing how to properly write can dictate a life or death situation. Looking

back at my last english course I was tasked to describe every detail about a portrait and write

about it, at the time I was unaware of the importance but now I realize that as a nurse I may need

to describe a patient’s injuries and use those details to in some cases try and determine what

happened. Another assignment that taught me an important skill was learning how to cooperate

with group members well because this will allow me to work with other in the future. Doing

good in this course will only help me improve this skills which will be beneficial to me when I

become a nurse because I will be able to work and communicate properly with other nurses.

At the end of this course I will be required to turn in a website, my last course required

me to do this as well but it was about everything I had done in that class. This assignment taught

me how to basically make a portfolio about myself and the type of work I’ve done which is a

very important skill when applying for a job in the future. Also, I am motivated to succeed in this

course because the nursing program is very competitive and to be accepted you must have

around a 3.8 GPA and pass an exam. Not only is it important to get an A or B in this course I can

take what I learn and use it to pass the test needed to be accepted into the nursing program.

Lastly, I have never been good at writing I always saw it as my worst subject because I would

average a C in all my classes and rarely a B. Now that I am a college student I want to turn my

weakness in english into a strength and better myself professionally. In conclusion, succeeded in

this course will help me achieve my goal of becoming a nurse because of all the forms of

communication and writing I will be learning. It will also only help me become the person I want

to be and do the things I plan to do.
