Banksy’s Stencils
The most controversial street artist in the world, Banksy, has developed an entire art subculture devoted to his
works. His identity remains unknown, even after over 20 years of being involved with the graffiti scene. His works not
only include many powerful, controversial images, but they may also be found as viral images on the Internet.
He began his graffiti art lifestyle by admiring the works of Blek Le Rat and often recycling his old ideas. In his
work, Blek described the rat as “the only free animal in the city”, and one which “spreads the plague everywhere, just
like street art”. British graffiti artist Banksy has acknowledged his influence and both have expressed mutual desire for
collaboration.
Banksy has been very active in the graffiti scene since the early 1990s. By the age of 18, he began to develop
stencils after nearly being caught vandalizing public spaces by police. He hid beneath a garbage truck, and saw stencil
letters on it. Looking for a faster way to paint, Banksy decided stenciling would be his new graffiti type. He combines
spray-paint with multi-layered stencils, including anything found in the streets like street signs to convey his message.
His artwork is often satirical and combines dark humor with graffiti and also spread messages across art, philosophy,
and politics.
