TYPICAL RCC BEAM

Hand Calculation as per IS- 456:2000

1. Depth of neutral axis

0.36 fck b xu = 0.87fy Ast

= 0.36*32.88*254* xu = 0.87*413.68*3*(3.14/4)*16*16 = xu = 72.20 mm

2. Depth of balanced neutral axis

xu,max = 0.48*d = 0.48*392.4 = 188.35m

Here, xu < xu,max , so the section is to be design as under reinforced beam.

3. Moment of resistance

Mu = 0.87 fy Ast (d-042 xu) = 0.87*413.68*603.18*(392.4-0.42*72.20) = Mu= 78.60*106N-mm

=78.60KN-m
4. Ultimate load acting on the member

To get the ultimate load equate moment of resistance = Maximum bending moment

78.60*106 = (w/2)*1524 = Ultimate load (W/2) = 51.57*103N = 51.57KN

5. Cracking moment and load

a) Cracking moment

Cracking moment Mcr = Fcr (Ig/yb) = 0.7(√32.88)*( 2.02*109/ 288.6) = Mcr = 35.46*106N-mm =
35.46 KN-m

b) Cracking load

Cracking moment = bending moment due to cracking load

35.46*106 = (W/2) *1524 = (W/2) = 23.27*103N= 23.27 KN

c) Stress at bottom due to first crack

fct)crack = Mcr* (yb/Ig) = 35.46*106*(288.6/2.02*109) = 4.012 N/mm2

(fct)crack) ≥ 0.7 (fck)

6. Deflection due to cracking load

Δcr = ((W/2) *a / 24EcIg)) * (3L2eff - 4a2)

Δcr = ((23.27*103*1524) /(24*28670.54*2.02*109)) * (3*45722 – 4*15242)

Δcr = 1.36 mm
