Advanced Organizational Psychology

How do you achieve success on the following dimensions?

I. ORGANIZATIONAL EFFECTIVENESS – is the concept of how effective an

organization is in achieving the outcomes the organization intends to produce
(from Wikipedia).

a. Employee Motivation

Motivation is the internal force that drives a worker to action as well as the
external factors that encourage that action (Locke & Latham, 2002). The
ability to motivate the employees of an organization greatly depends on
how the organization is willing to meet with the employee’s expectations
vis a vis their expectations of them. If the organization is doing what it has
promised to the employees, the employees will be able to deliver and
perform what is expected or even more. Then, the organization shall be
effective in achieving its goals. Furthermore, it is a need for the organization
to make their employees to make clear of their goals, whether it be
personal or for the organization, because it is when employees who have
and understood their goals deliver more and perform because they know
what they are doing. Thus, an organization with employees who have set
goals are more effective.

b. Stress Management

Stress is one main hindrance to productivity and organizational

effectiveness. An organization, sometimes forgets about the wellness of
their employees and stress is being neglected. Stress management is very
important for an organization because it can take away the physical,
emotional and psychological well-being of the employees. Success
depends if your employees are well and in shape for the day’s work. An
organization with a stress free environment can be viewed as a productive
environment. Managing stress can be done by giving the employees’ time
to take a day off of work or even an hour which is work free could also be
done to promote a stress free environment.

c. Leadership
The leadership in an organization has an active role in the attainment of
organizational effectiveness. A leader must be able to know the three pillars
of leadership in accordance to Grant & Hagberg (1996), which were: being
the inspiring evangelist for a vision, managing implementation; and building
relationships with the subordinates. Leadership must always be rooted from
the desire to align and engage the workforce to a clearly defined goal. A
leader must be able to influence engagement by valuing the employees,
drawing out their talent and providing career development opportunities.
The leaders of the organization shall serve as stewards of their employees
to be able to attain organizational effectiveness.

II. GLOBALIZATION – is primarily an economic process of interaction and

integration that is associated with social and cultural aspects. (from Wikipedia)

a. Leadership

Globalization is one of the major challenges of organizations nowadays.

Leaders in organizations must be able to think ahead and strategize on how
to prepare the organization in facing globalization. Not all employees
immediately adjust and accept several changes in order to remain
competitive and relevant in the market, it is the leader’s job to know how
to make these employees be ready and prepare to accept the challenges
of globalization. The leaders must be able to empathize on the side of the
employees, on how they accept and adjust to the changes brought about
by globalization. The leaders themselves must accept the challenges of
globalization, because there would be moments when the leaders
themselves are not able to adjust to the changes happening around them.
After the changes will be accepted, the organization shall then be more
effective.

b. Employee Satisfaction & Commitment

Organizations must also make it to a point that the employees are satisfied
and committed despite the challenges of globalization. It is always
important to know where the organization stand in facing the challenge.
Organizational effectiveness shall be attained by ensuring that the
employees are satisfied at all times and are committed to performing more
even though they are aware of the fact that globalization is a weakness to
the organization. Organizations can give more incentives (monetary or
non-monetary) to employees who are affected of the challenges of
globalization. With this, stress can be reduced, and a more effective
workforce will be present.

c. Organizational Communication

Globalization entails the need to adjust to several changes that needs to

be accepted by the organization and its employees. It is a pre-requisite
that the members of an organization shall be informed of the details of the
changes that globalization has brought about. Organizational
communication is how organizations represent, present, and constitute
their organizational culture – the attitudes, values, and goals that
characterize the organization and its members. The organization must
make sure that the details of the changes being planned to be
implemented must be cascaded to all employees, just like goals.
Employees should also have the privilege to express themselves with
regards to the challenges of globalization and contribute to the attainment
of organizational effectiveness.

III. DIVERSITY, RESPONSIVENESS & SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

a. Organizational Communication

Success in diversity, responsiveness and social responsibility can be attained

with organizational communication by first knowing how diverse the
workforce is. Upon the identification of the diversity of workforce,
organizational communication shall then be suited in accordance to the
diversity of the workforce. Some employees might be able to adapt to
technology, some like the older group in the organization may find it easier
to communicate in the traditional modes of communication. It would also
be advisable to train the diverse workforce to all be in the same level. Even
though the diversity is there, there should be a same way of dealing with
every kind of employee.

b. Group Behavior, Team & Conflict

As a group, it is given that the group is composed of a diverse individuals.

To be able to achieve organizational effectiveness, the organization should
be able to determine on how cohesive the organization is, and what makes
it a team and what makes it not become a team. Organizational culture is
also important topic in the attainment of organizational effectiveness. It is
known to be elaborating what group members’ capacity to think
collectively to foster a coordinated activity. Conflicts cannot be avoided
and is normal to organizations, but it should be resolved immediately so that
it cannot hamper the organization’s performance.

c. Leadership

A leader in a diverse organization must be very inclusive and motivating.

With the goal of organizational effectiveness, the challenge of managing
a diverse workforce could be very difficult but at the same time be a
learning experience to handle different kinds of personalities.
Organizational effectiveness in a diverse workforce is possible with a strong
leader with firm decisions which are not favorable to a specific group of
employees. There should be a fair treatment from the leaders in an
organization so that the employees will be motivated to perform well.
