1.2 Loading

Load Type UDL ( kN/m) Point Load (kN)

Pedestrian barrier Load LL 0.75 0.92
Rail Self Weight DL 0.019 0.024

Note: Span = 1.220 m

Combination ULS SLS

Live Load 1.8 1
Dead Load 1.2 1

The point load at ULS is give as:

F = 1.8 × 0.92 + 1.2 × 0.024

= 1.7 kN

Design force vw∗

The fillet weld will be subject to the design force per unit length (vw∗ ):

Strength assessment of fillet welds

A fillet weld group subject to a design force per unit length of weld (vw∗ ) at the
ultimate limit shall satisfy :

vw∗ < φvw

12.6.7.2
where:
φ = 0.8
vw∗ = Design force per unit length.
vw = Nominal shear capacity of the weld

Shear Capacity of weld

The nominal capacity of a fillet weld per unit length (vw ) is:

vW = 0.6fuw tt kr
where:
fuw = 450 M pa
Lw = 0.45 m ≤ 1.7 ∴ kr = 1.0

Tt

Figure 2: Weld

tt = cos(45) × 6 = 4.24 mm

vw = 0.6fuw tt kr
= 0.6 × 480 × 4.24 × 1.0
= 1221.0 N/mm

φvw = 0.8 × 1221 = 976.8 N/mm

Strength Check:

vw∗ < φvw

4.4 N/mm < 976.8 N/mm ∴ OK

Use 6 CFW weld along full length of plate.
