Your Name: Kayleigh Alegria Date of Activities: 3/9/19, 4/2/19, 4/5/19

Faculty name: Mary O’Connell

Describe the community service/professional activity/s you attended or participated with (be
specific about the purpose and your role):

I participated in 3 community service/professional activities to complete my eight hours of

Professional Development. The activities in included:

1. Stop the Bleed Class: This course was put on by the organization ICSAVE, that targeted
both individuals from the general public and individuals working or interested in health
care. During the course we were given both lecture content and practice time to
understand the best techniques and rules for bleeding management in crisis type
scenarios.

2. BLS for Healthcare Provider Renewal Course: The course I went to was held by the same
company that I received my BLS certification through when entering nursing school. It
was a small class and I enjoyed the pointers and stories that the instructor supplemented
the video material with. Most participants were also renewing their certification.

3. The last activity I chose was to provided community service at the kitchen at Casa Maria
Catholic Worker community, at their location off 22nd St. I met up with another student
from the cohort and helped pack hundreds of bagged lunches, prepare food for the next
day and assist the other volunteers with clean up before leaving later that morning.

Where was this held and what was was program/activity length?

1. (Stop the Bleed) Held at the Pima County Health Department: 2.5 Hours

2. (BLS Renewal Course) Held at the CPR2U training location: 3 Hours

3. (Community Service at Casa Maria): Volunteered at Casa Maria’s Kitchen: 2.5 hours

Discuss the value of this experience to you (be specific).

Each one of these experiences was very valuable. The Stop the Bleed course allowed me to learn
about and apply techniques of emergent tourniquet use and emergency wound packing, skills that
aren’t frequently practiced in our foundational nursing coursework. Renewing my BLS was a
great application of what I already knew about CPR/AED use, and even if it seems basic, I
haven’t been in a code scenario or practiced compressions since my last BLS certification.
Lastly, my experience at Casa Maria was incredibly impactful. From the time I arrived at the
kitchen, I saw so many people lined up, clearly in need of food, impoverished and many
malnourished by appearance. The value I found in this community service was beyond what I
can explain. My actions were so simple, but at the end of the morning one of the volunteers in
charge told me how if myself and the other people that showed up that day, the same amount of
meals would still have to be produced, and instead of it falling on that single person, we were
able to divide the work. It has been a couple years since I’ve done volunteering/community
service, truthfully, and it was such a significant reminder of just how severely poverty inflicts
people and families. Although it wasn’t much of my time I could contribute there, it definitely
made me want to seek out experiences like this in the future.

Would you recommend this specific communnity/professional experience in the future; why or
why not? (Describe)

I would recommend each of the three activities I attended for future students. Of course BLS
renewal is required, but I think for students that don’t happen to get an opportunity to participate
in a code, getting this opportunity to practice is crucial. The other Stop the Bleed course and
community service for Casa Maria’s soup kitchen were additionally both valuable experiences I
would recommend, because of what I learned and the enjoyment I got my learning.
